Hi all FTM mum here and a bit clueless! I know we're to wash baby clothes but are people washing everything else? E.g. blankets, towels, bedding etc

Thanks!

I did.

Bit annoyed I did now as I bought some expensive Tommy Teepee swaddle blanket things and now baby is here I’m not happy using swaddles so I have some never been used but will be harder to sell on as I threw away packaging and washed them!

But that aside I would wash it all.

flapdoodlery · 23/08/2020 11:20

I washed everything because I like it to be fresh and clean. I also wash new clothes for myself and older DC though as I know what shop warehouses are like!

hellolittlebaby · 23/08/2020 11:21

Yes, I washed everything. Towels, blankets, flannels, clothing.

Mostly due to the Formaldehyde & other chemicals used:

I never bothered

DappledThings · 23/08/2020 11:23

I washed everything for DC1 and nothing for DC2 except the second hand bits that had been in the loft and needed a freshen up.

Lemondrops41 · 23/08/2020 11:25

I never bothered either. I think things look their best before washing. I've never got sick from not washing new stuff neither have my children.

biscuit13 · 23/08/2020 12:18

@SassyPants87 I'm 30 weeks and I've just finished washing everything, like everything. Clothes, hats, blankets, bedding, comforters, snuggle bag, even the little Teddy we bought. Not only thinking of chemicals but also other people handling stuff in the shops before us. If you're worried just wash it :) I feel a lot better now I have:)

MeadowHay · 23/08/2020 12:22

The only things I washed in advance were some hand me downs from a relative because they smelled awful Grin (like their dog essentially). I didn't wash anything else.

ImaSababa · 23/08/2020 12:27

I've washed everything - a mix of second hand stuff from eBay and new.

Dollywilde · 23/08/2020 12:36

Washed everything but mostly because 1) we had the heatwave and it’s been easy to dry everything outside 2) DH has eczema and I worry she might have sensitive skin too and 3) I wanted her to have a familiar scent on everything.

New2020 · 23/08/2020 13:23

I'm going to wash everything over the next couple of weeks. Wish I'd done it sooner now given the weather is not as great!

SassyPants87 · 23/08/2020 13:48

Thanks everyone! I think I might just wash everything and that way I won't have to second guess what I should or shouldn't wash!

I never bothered , new stuff looks so much nicer before washing.

theresaplaceforus · 23/08/2020 14:24

Coming up to 33 weeks and everything for hospital bag and all newborn & up to 1 month clothes are washed as are blankets. Bedding will be done soon too.
I have some things in bigger sizes but just leaving those for now.

DramaAlpaca · 23/08/2020 14:27

It's a long time since I had babies but it never entered my head that I should wash new stuff before they were worn. I did wash all hand-me-downs though.

Lamb1234 · 24/08/2020 19:10

Washed everything, working in retail I knew how filthy and dusty warehouses etc are and how often outfits are handled and dropped on shop floor so I wanted to make sure nothing irritating was on them for new babies skin including the chemicals used when making clothing too.

Napqueen1234 · 24/08/2020 19:13

My baby came early so I never got round to washing stuff (other than cot bedding etc) as we made that up far in advance Blush to excited with first DC! Was a godsend as I swapped loads of stuff for bigger sizes etc as baby was huge and grew so fast!

orangejuicer · 24/08/2020 19:14

I did and still wash new clothes etc.

waitforitwaitforit · 24/08/2020 19:19

I washed everything except soft toys and similar (or rather my mum did as DD1 arrived earlier than expected so it's lucky it was a long labour or she wouldn't have had any clothes at all).

I don't do them any more, or my own and only really did the DD's until they were in 3-6 months.

takenbywine · 24/08/2020 19:27

I washed everything that was fabric/washable.

scotgal99 · 24/08/2020 21:19

I’ve only washed two sleepsuits because they had marks on. Aside from that I’m not washing anything else. My parents & in laws never washed any baby clothes & my husband & I never had any issues. My SIL washed all my nieces clothes before she was born & she has the worst skin on a baby I’ve ever seen.

welshweasel · 24/08/2020 21:20

Never washed anything, whether new or handed down. Didn’t occur to me that I should. Kids seem fine!

takenbywine · 24/08/2020 22:24

Not only I washed everything fabric/washable before baby arrived, I also wash everything that I buy new from the store still. I've worked in retail before when I was a student and know the treatment clothes get in the storage room.

Sunshine1235 · 24/08/2020 22:37

I washed all second hand stuff but never new stuff

wannabebump · 25/08/2020 05:33

I'm planning on washing everything that can be washed really even though it's all new, because of dusty warehouses and chemicals.

Just waiting on the furniture arriving, when I'll be approx 33/34 weeks and then I'll get on it.
