25mm Cervix length at 20 weeks.... will I need cerclage?

Hello all,

I’ve been told my cervix length is 25mm at 20 weeks and am worried I may need a stitch put in. I am being monitored weekly now to determine if I need a stitch.

My first born arrived 6 weeks early and since then I’ve had lletz treatment, they took 12mm away. Due to this I knew I may have a risk of another premature birth but this time even earlier, hence the cervix length scan at 20 weeks. I have not been diagnosed with an incompetent cervix yet.

Has anyone gone to term or to at least 34 weeks with a cervix as short as 25mm without needing a stitch? I’m so scared to have a stitch put it, it sounds so risky.

Or if anyone has had to have a stitch put in, how was it and did it work?

Many thanks,

Natalie.

@Klwb93 thank you so much, I am so happy I’m at 24 weeks now. Next milestone is 28 weeks! Hoping it’s stress free up till then. My obstetrician even asked me if I’m happy for induction if I go full term, it’s strange talking and worrying about that! Haha. So happy to hear your bleeding has stopped. You had a quick recovery. Hope your check goes well and that the rest of your pregnancy is plain sailing! These groups have really helped me too. Thank you all so much xx

That's such amazing news @nattynoo85 it's so crazy isn't it when they start talking about all this with you, I'm seeing my consultant on Tuesday which I'm happy about, I've pretty much rested the whole time I've been home which I think has helped me so hopefully everything has gone well for mine, glad you are doing well xx

Hey ladies its been a while since i commented i hope ur all well! I wondered if anyone was further along than me i a similar position so i know what to expect, i was 20mm at 13weeks and i was given the stitch right away, im now 17.5 weeks and its 18mm above the stitch, what should i expect they will they do if it keeps shortening or is there not much they can do?, it only troublesome if the membranes bulge or waters go, why iv not asked this i don't know, but now im trying to google and cant find anything out about what happens if it keeps shortening. Xx

@JSLACEFAMILY can I ask after your 14 week cervical scan at 22mm and having the stitch placed what where ur scans saying following this....Mine was 20mm at 13 weeks and now 18mm at 17 weeks, what happens if it keeps shortening with the stitch in place? Xx

JSLACEFAMILY · 29/08/2020 07:35

@Hayleylou89 In my trust they don't do anymore check ups or scans once the stitch is in so I have no idea what my length is anymore 🙈. I was just told to attend the maternal unit if ever anything didn't feel right or my waters broke etc. I'm now 37 weeks and having my stitch out on Wednesday 😬. X

Hi ladies hope you are all well? Just wanted to let you know I spoke to the consultant today who gave me some advice on some questions I had and put my mind at rest which is good, they have booked me in for a cervix scan next week when I'll be 24+2 to check the length and the neck of the womb xxx

Klwb93 · 09/09/2020 12:57

Hey guys hope you are okay? I had my cervix scan today and it's got longer I was so happy!! No funnelling either which made me happy, they are so happy with the scan so now just to wait and see what the consultant says next xxx

So happy for you! Must be a huge relief x

Klwb93 · 09/09/2020 19:20

Thank you @198435years just relaxed me a little bit, how are things with you?x

The progesterone pessaries must be doing ok because there hasn't been much change since the last measurement and I'm 24 weeks next Tuesday so looking forward to getting to that benchmark. X

Hello everyone. I just had a scan yesterday and showed my cervix shortens at 16mm when pressure applied. Tommys said UK’s Standard of care is to do cerclage. I’m really anxious about it. So I enrolled in the trial stitch, pessary or progesterone. Unfortunately, I got randomized on the stitch anyway! I’m really anxious about this I don’t want to have it. Do you know where I could get Progesterone or Arabin pessary privately or even in another country nearby? Thanks

Hi - can’t comment on what’s best without more info but I’m sorry you’re going through this, it’s stressful!just wanted to let you know that a trial is something you consent for - if you’ve changed your mind about what you have done, you just need to contact them and withdraw from the trial (there should be contact details on your trial information). Then you can arrange another discussion with the doctors and choose together which treatment you’d like to try. You don’t need to
go elsewhere. Good luck!
