12 week scan nerves

I know there's been many threads on the 12 week scan (I've read them all!) but haven't seen any really recent ones. I have my first ever scan tomorrow and am so nervous. I'm terrified there's something wrong etc and was just wondering if anyone has any advice on how to reduce the worry?

I'm 24, first pregnancy and would be 12+6 tomorrow going by lmp..

Thanks! X

I felt the same as you before my 12 week scan. Tbh it wasn’t the romantic experience I had hoped due to covid and a slightly batsh*t sonographer, so be prepared for that!! It’s a medical exam at the end of the day so maybe don’t get too misty eyed about it cos in my experience it can be quite technical!! However my advice would be:
-remember that your worries are just that - worries not reality! Chances are all will be beautifully well 🤗

  • if yours is anything like mine expect to be rolled around, prodded, wriggled about, sent for a wee, - all normal as far as I can see - babes are not always cooperative but it’s not a problem can just be a bit frustrating And worrying at the time. I wasn’t expecting this but from what I have seen it’s reallly normal.
  • pauses are LONG but again not usually anything to worry about. Sonogrpaher has to concentrate so they won’t necessarily be talking to you all the way through and I found that hard and worrying. I practised some 7/11 breathing techniques at my 20 week scan to help with that so I wasn’t fretting the whole time. You could try something similar just to keep yourself focused and calm whilst they are looking at what they need to.
-try to enjoy! Seeing your little baby is a very special moment so focus on looking forward to that, rather than worrying. I know that can be hard.

Hope it goes well!! Xxx

@Pol96 got mine next week and feel exactly the same! I feel you hear of so many MMC's but from what I've read they really are quite rare, they just seem more common on these forums! x

Pol96 · 14/07/2020 15:42

@Fellmonster5 thank you so much for telling me about your experience and your tips. I'm trying to focus on the fact I've not had any bad signs (bad cramps or bleeding) and concentrate on seeing a healthy baby.. X

@IronMummy28 I know, it makes it seem much more common than it is because people obviously want/need support more during difficult times than not. When next week is your scan? I hope you have a morning one as mine is in the afternoon and it's going to be like waiting another whole day! X

Totally normal to be nervous. I was nervous about pretty much every scan I had. And I had many. Some sonographers are friendlier than others, it's nothing you've done or not done. There's lots of looking at things and clicking while they measure what they need to. More 20 week scan than 12 but when they say they can't see something it isn't code for somethings wrong. It honestly means they can't see it. They aren't allowed to lie to you to make you feel better, if there was a problem they would have to tell you. We had several attempts and seeing DS's heart and he wasn't playing ball. I was distraught. I thought that meant there was something wrong with him. There isn't and he's perfect.

IronMummy28 · 14/07/2020 15:52

@Pol96 Next Tuesday at 9.30am... so pleased I've got a morning one (i'd be on edge all morning otherwise!) but i'll be around 13 weeks on lmp by then so I feel like I've been waiting forever! The trouble also is that we focus on the stories that ended badly and actually there are so many positive stories too, look how many people on here have healthy babies, and a few of them! x

Tallulahs09 · 14/07/2020 15:54

I've got mine on Thursday and I am feeling really nervous about it too. Hopefully after that can relax a bit knowing all is ok x

I was nervous for my first scan. I think I was still stunned I was pregnant. Convinced they were going to say I wasn't. Just enjoy seeing your baby for the first time.

Kelcat9494 · 14/07/2020 16:39

I have my scan on Thursday and I feel the same, I had a scan last week as I went into hospital with dehydration (thanks HG) baby was fine but I'm scared that everything has changed in a week :(

Pol96 · 14/07/2020 16:57

@mylittlesandwich thank you, glad your ds is perfect after all the worry ❤️

@IronMummy28 so jealous of your early scan! No idea what I'm going to do to occupy myself tomorrow until the scan! And yeah I'll be 12+6 tomorrow (by lmp) and found out I was pregnant at just before 4 weeks so I understand the wait!

@Tallulahs09 aw good luck for Thursday.. I'm looking forward to being able to relax a bit after the scan. Is yours a morning scan?

@nettytree thank you for sharing, and yeah I don't really think it's real yet, I took soo many tests.. But I just don't 'feel' pregnant.. Just a bit under the weather

@Kelcat9494 so sorry about the HG a friend of mine had that and I am so glad I didn't get it. As you saw your baby only a week ago I'm sure everything is good.

@Pol96 my scan is at 12:30 tomorrow. Was yours this morning or this afternoon? Hope all is good Smilex

MaryShelley1818 · 15/07/2020 13:36

Oh it's awful isn't it, I get so much anxiety around scans. We had one at 7+4 (private early reassurance scan) - I insisted on going on my own because I was so convinced nothing would be there - it showed a perfect little bean with strong heartbeat.
I've got another one on Monday evening to do my NIPT bloods where I'll be 10+6.
Then my NHS one the week after at 11+6.

Keeping everything crossed for Monday as we'll announce if things go well as I'm really at the point I can't hide it anymore.

HopefulB · 15/07/2020 14:01

@IronMummy28 I’m a Tuesday scan too! But at 13:40. And it’s at my workplace. Estimated 11+1 today, so bang on 12 weeks on day of scan.

I’ve found it really hard be actually believe the BFP (all 5 of them), so have been very much erring on the IF side so far, but definitely anxious about scan.

Fingers crossed for all x

Pol96 · 15/07/2020 14:58

@Tallulahs09 it was 2pm.. All okay! Omg was so weird! Good luck with yours x

@Pol96 So pleased all was okay for you today Smile great news. Thank you, I'm getting more nervous the closer it gets but at least tomorrow I shall know how everything is.

Pol96 · 15/07/2020 21:36

Good luck to those of you who still have scans!
It was honestly amazing.. I haven't felt pregnant and literally as soon as she put the scanner on my tummy I saw my baby.. And she was lovely.. Pointed out all the parts etc kept reassuring me. My only issue was my bladder was too full so had to empty half (not easy!)

Aww lovely scan photo @Pol96 so clear. I'm feeling super nervous this morning just waiting for 12:30 and praying all is okay x

Pol96 · 16/07/2020 11:06

@Tallulahs09 I'm sure everything will be okay, I forgot how nervous I was because I was concentrating on not going for a wee 😂 so maybe try that?? But I'm sure it'll be okay, and you'll get to see you little one very soon x

@Pol96 It all went well thank you. I've got an awkward little one that wanted to curl up and keep their back to us lol. So had to wait a little while and then be scanned again and then finally got a wave and all looking good, dates put me a little bit ahead to what I thought too. Smilexx

danidella · 16/07/2020 17:29

I had my 12 week scan at the beginning of June and i was excited but nervous. I was worried in case they found no baby there! (Weird i know) But the sonographer was lovely and put me at ease. My baby was really wriggly and was moving around a lot 😆. For those still to have theirs try to relax and not think about weeing, i ended up having to go for a wee during the scan as my bladder was too big. I thought i was 12+2 weeks at my scan, turned out i was 13+3 weeks! Also ask questions and raise any worries. The midwife who spoke to me after was really helpful. Ive got my 20 week scan next week so im a bit nervous for that one. Good luck ladies

Pol96 · 16/07/2020 18:01

@Tallulahs09 Yay! Congratulations!! how far along did you think you were and how far along are you?
