Early pregnancy cramps on left side

Hello, I just wondered if anyone had experienced similar to me as I am really worrying. I have been experiencing cramps on my left pelvic area very low down almost on the bone, it’s quite a sharp pain and it’s been constant since yesterday morning. However I only feel the pain when standing up. I have had no bleeding or any watery discharge. I am 4 weeks at 2 days pregnant and conceived through IVF. This is my first pregnancy so I am unsure what to expect! All I’ve been reading about is ectopic pregnancies so it’s sent my mind into overdrive!!

You wouldn’t normally feel ectopic pain until much later, there are also other symptoms that come with it (check nhs website). I had pain almost on the bone throughout the first trimester, and the midwife said it was just everything stretching. I’m now 23 weeks pregnant with a baby happily kicking my bladder whilst I eat my breakfast. Lol

Totally fine if there is no blood, I had the same thing at 4 weeks til 6 weeks and the Pain as constant every day for the two weeks so I went to go get checked out at the EPC and the scan was fine! They couldn't pin point it apart from could be wind! Embarrassing right Grin they said not to worry unless there was blood! Make sure you drink lots of water Smile

Nikkinoodle20 · 09/07/2020 09:04

Ah thank you so much this has definitely put my mind at ease!! I think just because it’s on one side it’s making me more paranoid!! Congratulations rainbowafterthestorm!! 😊. Yes I will make sure I’m drinking plenty of water too! Thank you so much x

Yeah it's because that's the ovary that released the egg Smile can be sore for a few weeks apparently, they did an internal scan as I was too early to see external, and it really hurt when they looked at the left ovary, they said nothing to worry about just where it was released! Congrats left ovary Halo

loulamay · 09/07/2020 11:14

Thank goodness I found this thread, I am having exactly the same thing and am also 4 weeks pregnant after IVF! My first fresh transfer didn't work and this is my first FET and first pregnancy. Also convinced it was ectopic but then tried to rationalise that given the poppy seed size of the embryo surely it couldn't be causing any pain yet?!

@Nikkinoodle20 did you do fresh or frozen transfer?

Newmama29 · 09/07/2020 11:18

@avsnash totally fine if there is no blood
Sorry but this isn’t necessarily true. When I suffered an ectopic pregnancy the consultant told me that the risk is internal bleeding, therefore there can be no blood coming out but you could be bleeding into your abdomen.

OP if you feel concerned I would phone your local EPU as they are amazing with handling these things. They can do internal scans & blood tests to rule out any ectopic pregnancy.

Nikkinoodle20 · 09/07/2020 12:36

@loulamay yes I had a FET not fresh! Is your pain only when standing too? That’s so strange that we are experiencing the same problem. I phoned my clinic and they advised me to take paracetamol and to call back if pain worsened or any bleeding. They didn’t seem very concerned. They also said that it is quite early to feel ectopic pain but that being said it isn’t unheard of. I am going for a blood test Monday anyway. I don’t think I’m bleeding internally as the pain is definitely manageable.

Strangely when I went to bed last night it was still there but when I woke up this morning it was gone and has only come back a bit this afternoon. I wonder if exercise is aggravating it because I did quite a long dog walk this morning! Who knows.

It's a strange feeling, not a cramp exactly, but more like a kind of pulling or like a stretched muscle. Which would fit with what you said @Rainbowafterthestorm!

I've had my hcg bloods done so not seeing my Dr for 2 more weeks until my first scan (when is yours?) so I guess I will just see if it gets worse. Then once it goes away I'll find something else to worry about Wink

Nikkinoodle20 · 09/07/2020 14:48

@loulamay sounds like it could be your uterus stretching perhaps! That’s great that the pain went away as well. My pain has been constant and this afternoon it has progressed into a stitch Like pain in my left abdomen. I’ve phoned the clinic again and explained this and she’s just said to carry on with paracetamol and too early for ectopic pain!! Can’t help but feel like something is wrong ☹️I guess I’ll just have to keep trying to ignore it for now!

@Nikkinoodle20 hello I had something similar at 5 Weeks +2. Pain lasted for about a whole day. Was referred to EPU. Scan took place at 5 Weeks +4. Pregnancy in right place with Gestational sac and yoke sac and no fetal pole. I was told I am still too early. They said the possible reason for pain could be a cyst on my left ovary called Corpus luteum that is harmless.

Good luck x

Nikkinoodle20 · 09/07/2020 15:53

@Lucindaa thank you for your reassuring message. I have just read about corpus luteum pain and that sounds very similar to what I’m experiencing! Glad all went ok for you. X

That's what she said I had 👍🏼 (along with the maybe gas!) 😂

Annu786 · 09/07/2020 17:03

I am over 5 weeks and I was feeling pains on my left quite abit I still do occasionally
Having suffered an eptopic 17years back I can say that eptopic pain is very painful and it’s not just on one side it is accompanied by dark bleeding and a pain in the tip of one shoulder
I really don’t think It is thag try not too worry but if you can’t rest then as the midwife / doctor to refer you to early pregnancy clinic they will do an internal examination as well as a ultrasound to see where the sac is
I had this done last Friday and luckily for me sac was in uterus
Good luck

Nikkinoodle20 · 09/07/2020 17:55

@Annu786 congratulations!! And sorry to hear about your previous ectopic. I will wait and see how it goes and if the pain continues into my 5th week I think I’ll try and go to the EPU. Thank you for sharing your experience! I’m keeping everything crossed 🙂

Best thing get it checked out! I feel 10 times better except it raised a few other worries about the fetal pole not present!!

BuffaloCauliflower · 09/07/2020 18:07

I had this constantly for the first 11 ish weeks of my pregnancy. Felt like stabbing in my left ovary. At my 12 week scan they said that was a) the side I ovulated from to conceive, and b) that I had a cyst on that ovary which was secreting stuff to help with implantation. Very normal and fine apparently. Yours sounds similar? My first sign of pregnancy was a really sharp stabby pain in that area at about 5DPO

BuffaloCauliflower · 09/07/2020 18:08

Just looked up corpus luteum and apparently that’s what I’m talking about too!

loulamay · 10/07/2020 13:39

How are you feeling @Nikkinoodle20 ?

Nikkinoodle20 · 10/07/2020 13:44

Hi @loulamay, still cramping today! I’ve phoned my ivf clinic and they still are just telling me to continue with paracetamol. I’m just about to head down to the doctors for a urine sample to rule out a UTI although I really don’t think it is that. Thank you for asking! How are you feeling?

OP posts:
loulamay · 10/07/2020 13:55

Pretty good - it tailed off yesterday and so I slept well (also went for acupuncture which might have helped). Few twinges etc this afternoon, hoping all normal but still keeping an eye out for any increased pain or bleeding (so far none!).

Couldn't help myself and did a home pregnancy test this morning which was positive so that made me feel better but need to not obsess over those!

Let me know what the Dr says. I am very curious!

Nikkinoodle20 · 10/07/2020 14:46

@loulamay no uti, As expected. He told me to go to a&e if the pain got worse but it’s not really getting worse it’s just spreading up my side into where I would assume are my kidneys (hence the urine test). That’s great news that your pains have subsided! Possibly implantation cramps! When was your test date? Mine is technically tomorrow but I started testing on Monday! Oops. I’ve had positives all week though. Will still test tomorrow and then I have a blood test with my clinic on Monday.

My clinic (I'm British but we live in South Africa) did a beta test 7 days after transfer! I did some reading and it seemed very very early but I just went with it. It wasn't a super high hcg (but again, so early) but it doubled in 48 hours so my Dr was happy. Next thing is a scan in two weeks. I have friends in the UK who did IVF and they waited two weeks before doing a urine test at home then going in, which sounds like you.

I'm going to do another at home test on Monday (which will be 14 days post transfer) and just hope it's nice and strong! The pharmacy cheap tests have been fairly faint so far, but a line's a line!

loulamay · 13/07/2020 17:43

Did you get your test results? I saw my GP today and she said the pains that I (and you, although yours sounded a bit worse) were likely round ligament pain, especially if it was located mostly on one side. Hope you're feeling ok!

Nikkinoodle20 · 13/07/2020 22:14

@loulamay sorry I did not respond I hadn’t realised you sent a message! Ah okay that makes sense! Yes I had to wait 12 days but I tested early (oops). I was supposed to have a blood test today but it was rescheduled to tomorrow! My cramps are a lot better I have just a pulling sensation now in my groin area! Guess I should probably get used to the aches and pains?! (Here’s hoping). Glad to hear your appointment went okay with your GP and great news about your hcg levels rising! I’ll let you know how I get on tomorrow 😊
