Waking up STARVING in the night!

I'm so exhausted I keep waking at 4am every morning starving hungry and can't get back to sleep. I've fought it so far as I'm eating plenty through the day and already overweight so I really could do without having an extra meal in the day but I literally feel sick with hunger. I'm just approaching 30 weeks. Is this a common thing? Am I just going to have to cave and have an early hours snack or will this pass do we think? TIA!

I'm 31 weeks and get this most nights, I wake up around 4am very hungry and if I don't eat start feeling sick. I find a banana usually does the trick. If I'm still really hungry after that I'll have a cereal bar, but usually can get back to sleep after my early morning banana!
I'm getting full very easily so don't think eating more at night would help me as I'd just be really uncomfortable.

I’ve been waking at 3-4am starving hungry for the past few weeks. I’m 33 weeks’ and it is accompanied these days by insomnia, which has been really getting me down.
I’m wondering whether the hunger is down to a growth spurt/period of increased work my body is putting in, because this also happened in my first trimester. It’s such a nuisance but I have to go downstairs and have a bowl of cereal and a banana. Confused

MellowMelly · 11/06/2020 08:31

I second the banana! Brilliant for night time hunger attacks. I used to have a banana before bedtime and some Gaviscon just so I didn’t wake up with such a violent feeling of hunger.

BabyB19 · 11/06/2020 08:33

Thank god it's not just me @2020Aug @PoodlesAreMySpiritAnimal I think the same this is where the baby starts packing on all the fat doesn't it and like you I'm not able to eat such big meals now so will get Some cereal bars and start having one when I wake. The sickness is like the first trimester again of I don't have anything 🙄 good luck to you both thanks for your replies ❤️

Yep! Right here at 31 weeks with the starving hunger in the middle of the night and inability to eat big meals in one go. Grazing the only answer I think!

20viona · 11/06/2020 08:37

I had this but at around 12-15 weeks I slept with grapes next to my bed!

EverythingBlue2020 · 11/06/2020 08:39

I'm 34 weeks and went through this between weeks 30 amd 32. It was 4am too! The hunger was intense and actually painful like I hadn't eaten for days!

Now at 34 weeks bump is suddenly huge but the hunger has stopped (lost appetite now) so I think it was a growth spurt stage Smile

ThatLockdownLyfe · 11/06/2020 08:42

Just eat. I got flamed last time I posted it but I found keto snacks v helpful as kept me feeling fuller longer. Not to do the full keto diet you understand, just as options I hadn't thought of before

BabyB19 · 11/06/2020 08:52

As long as you're eating enough @ThatLockdownLyfe don't listen to others criticisms it's hard enough as it is! It's good to know we're all feeling this though and hopefully it's a growth spurt and will pass in a few weeks. For now bedside snacks it is, I'll worry about the weight gain later down the line 🤷🏽‍♀️🤣

And I second that @EverythingBlue2020 my belly burns like I'm actually starving and haven't had a scrap of food for a week 😭🤣

I used to have a bowl of cornflakes at about 3.30am for the last 8 weeks or so.

PickleKing · 11/06/2020 09:01

I would keep a banana at the side of the bed rather than a cereal bar. Great for killing the hunger pangs and yet healthy.

jdy123 · 11/06/2020 09:05

I literally had this last night , woke up 4amish starving! Think I need to bring some snacks to bed so I'm ready incase happens tonight cause it's really hard to get back to sleep when you're thinking of food ha.
I'm 33 weeks on Saturday...

hellosun20 · 11/06/2020 09:06

I found oatcakes a really filling snack at that time!

BabyB19 · 11/06/2020 09:07

I can't believe how common this is at this stage it's so good to ask and know that everything is normal and you're not just a greedy cow 🤣🤣🤣

Yep. Me too! 34 weeks and wake up in the night starving. I was laughing to my OH the other day saying I'm basically a newborn myself. All I do is wee and eat. 🤣

Irishprincess · 11/06/2020 11:12

Yep I've been like this through the the whole pregnancy and was the same with my first, also insomnia in the 2nd trimester which is so hard with a 14 month old and knowing I'll hardly sleep when the baby arrives!

denbyellie · 11/06/2020 11:59

Midwife told me to listen to your body if your tired sleep, if you're hungry eat, so I've got a little box at the side of my bed with crackers and little things in it fruit etc that you can nibble on when you wake up, helps you get back to sleep then so your not starving xxx

BabyB19 · 12/06/2020 19:07

Jus an update, I spoke to my GP yesterday who prescribed me omeprazole for the acid reflux and last night I slept like a baby! 10 hours! I've been getting around 4 hours previously. I can not believe the difference one tiny tablet made due to not waking up with that burning feeling in my belly. I'll will update again tomorrow but I'm praying this is it for the sleepless nights for a little while 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

I’ve been having a full bedtime snack just before I sleep since the second trimester because of this and it does the trick! Going to miss it when I force myself to get rid of it to lose the baby weight though 😂

Mummsnett · 13/06/2020 23:14

I had this with my first baby and am now once again waking most nights about 4am at 36 weeks. I have a bowl of cereal or at least a big glass of milk, which is filling and helps with the horrendous heartburn! I've terrible insomnia too, but avoiding eating just makes it worse for me as I lie for hours thinking how starving I am (as the acid kills my oesophagus!)

BabyB19 · 13/06/2020 23:40

@Mummsnett @Siobhan1989 I slept again for 8 hours last night and have had 2 full days of zero heartburn/acid reflux. I wish I'd asked for the tablets sooner as it's definitely that that was keeping me up and making me feel hungry. I feel 100% better for taking them x

OP posts:
Siobhan1989 · 13/06/2020 23:42

@BabyB19 I’m also on omeprazole hahah

postyourlunch · 14/06/2020 06:26

I never had this but I was on omeprazole from around 25 weeks. Glad you've got some now.
