Will we now need to wear face coverings to all appointments?

I had to wear one to my scan at the hospital, but not to my booking in appt at the GP.

lockdownpregnancy · 05/06/2020 18:52

I had to wear one when I went for my 20 weeks scan a few weeks ago, but I didn't today when I went for a check up at the maternity assessment unit x

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 05/06/2020 18:56

I didn't have to wear one to my scan or bloods, nor at the private scan that I had this week. but when my daughter was seen for assessment on a ward (she's fractured her thumb) yesterday we were made to wear masks.

My thought was immediately - are they now going to insist that mothers in labour wear one?? Obviously if the mother is covid +be I'd expect they'd be made to wear one but for a normal labour? I can't think of anything worse!

Natalie654321 · 05/06/2020 19:05

After the announcement today about face masks I thought the exact same thing @onlyreadingneverposting8. Wearing a face mask during labour sounds absolutely awful 😭

Loz1093 · 05/06/2020 19:36

I wonder if we turned up for appointments etc without a mask.. would they supply us with one if it will be compulsory as of mid June ?

1990shopefulftm · 05/06/2020 19:37

I didn't have to wear one back in April for my 12 week scan, they haven't said i need to for my 20 week scan when i spoke to the hospital yesterday but have got a mask just incase.

whattodo202000 · 05/06/2020 19:48

I was wondering this too, I am now overdue so should be going into labour any day now. I really don't want to have to wear a mask while I am in labour Sad

UrsulaSings · 05/06/2020 19:54

I wear a face mask to all my appointments anyway.

It just said visitors & outpatients so I dont think they expect inpatients to wear them, including women in labour.

Raaaa · 05/06/2020 19:56

I'm not going to wear one, especially not it labpur, fortunately no one has asked either

Racoonworld · 05/06/2020 20:07

Do you think this means during labour too? Or just appointments? I really don't want to wear one in labour!

Birdy1991 · 05/06/2020 20:12

I had a scan yesterday and they provided the mask. Really didn’t want to wear it though. And definitely won’t be comfortable wearing one during labour, surely they can’t make you do that with everything you go through in childbirth?!

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 05/06/2020 20:16

I wear one to all my appointments

Natalie654321 · 05/06/2020 20:21

@ursulasings you are right. I don't think we would have to wear as it is only if you are an outpatient or visitor... So I am guessing if you are in labour you are OK.

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 05/06/2020 21:14

Good point @Natalie654321 & I'm thinking they may well bring in testing for mother's and ask them to isolate before the birth...all we can do it wait and see. I suspect by that token birth partners will be required to wear a mask.

Ethellsmum · 05/06/2020 22:37

I read it as if attending appointments you need to wear a mask. No mention of inpatients wearing them.
I couldn’t think of anything worse in labour - It would push me to consider a home birth if it was compulsory in labour. What if you want gas and air?

Emberfoot · 05/06/2020 23:37

I have to wear one into the gp surgery for my midwife appts, but nothing else. I threw up when I was forced to wear a medical mask to go shopping, so I seriously hope I don't have to use one in labour or things are gonna get ugly fast lol 😂

newmum520 · 06/06/2020 01:09

I had to wear one for my c section and in recovery, also in the DAU when attending and they was a couple of weeks back.

newmum520 · 06/06/2020 01:09

I should add they provided them.

Yorkshirelass251 · 06/06/2020 06:10

I had my 12 week scan this week and chose to wear a mask. The other ladies waiting for a scan all had one on too, as did the sonographer. I was so surprised to see NO other staff were wearing them - one receptionist had one and had it pulled down over the bottom of her mouth and a doctor passed me in the corridor with the same thing.

I appreciate the mid-June guidelines haven't come into force yet but I was really surprised. They will be a big change for this hospital.

Birdy1991 · 06/06/2020 07:57

@Ethellsmum I agree - I think if they forced me to wear one I’d try and walk out and give birth at home - being so uncomfortable and heavy breathing with a mask added in? No thanks.

lockdownpregnancy · 06/06/2020 08:20

I really doubt they will make you wear one during labour??? If you're using gas & air you can't pull it down and pull it back up again every time you want to take a puff of it, surely not? That's absurd!

Chwil20 · 06/06/2020 08:20

I had my 12 week scan on 14th May and was told off by the sonographer for not wearing one. I will definitely be wearing one to all future appointments now, no matter where.

doughnutmuffin · 06/06/2020 08:26

No mention of a mask at my 20 week scan, rang and booked my 28 week appointment and again a mask wasn't mentioned, although I'm in NI and I think we've had relatively low covid numbers. If they provided one I'd wear it but I'd be abit pissed of if they tried to tell me off for not wearing one without previously telling me to wear one

jdy123 · 06/06/2020 08:31

I was worrying about the same thing! We can't be expected to wear them in labour I would have to refuse ! I'd have a panic attack most likely ha

Hatepickinganame · 06/06/2020 08:35

I wasnt asked to wear a mask at my scan last week, one or two women were wearing them and a handful of staff. But definitely not everyone. I cant breathe in them so i sincerely hope im not forced to wear one in labour
