25 weeks and was convinced I was in labour last night

Had a horrific day yesterday. LO was moving all day but in very strange verging on painful ways. Lady bits (sorry crap wording) were throbbing, back aching and regular having massive pains all across belly. Actually sat in bathroom crying at one point. Had diarhoa (completely wrong spelling I know) which i guess was the real cause of the stomach ache, but i convinced myself that it was labour, was sick and cried my eyes out like a baby.

Please reassure me I am not totally crazy. This is number 2 so not sure why I thought it was labour.

Could you go to the hospital to get yourself checked out. When I was pregnant with dd2 I ended up going in a couple of times because I had diarriah but it felt like contractions at the time.

Did they think you were wasting their time? I just worry all the time about people thinking I am being silly. Could they have been braxton hicks - dont remember having these with DS so could have been I guess and thought maybe my hormones were just getting the better of me.

I was also convinced I was in labour at 32 weeks, and not only went to hospital, but was also on the verge of asking for an epidural! Turns out I had a urinary infection.

DD was born exactly 8 weeks later

I agree with goingfor3 - ask for a check up.

They didn't at all make me feel like I was time wasting and I stayed in overnight. It is worth letting them take a look as its not worth taking any chances.

You are right. I ended up sleeping okay, but can feel it again now. Finishing work early today so will pop down to the hospital.

Hi mixedmama

It's a sensible idea to have things checked, I hope everything OK but better to be safe than sorry.

If there is any reason to suspect pre term labour the obstetricians will prescribe steroid injections for you 'just in case' to optimise the baby's lungs.

The uterus shares the same nerve supply as the bowel, and sometimes severe diarrhoea can stimulate the uterus to contract.

There are some situations where pre term labour is more likely to occur, investigations to rule out infection are usually easy and painless, albeit they may be uncomfortable.

I hope you feel better and please, never feel that you will be thought to be a nuisance.

That is really interesting about the nerve supply to both the uterus and bowel, that would make a lot of sense.

That was one of the reason all labouring mums used to be given an enema, not just to have a 'clean' delivery.

It was a rather cruel thing to do!

Hi Mixedmama, if you are worried about it, have it checked out. I think stomach upsets are one of those things that react to stress, so in other words the more worried you get about your diarrhoea, the less likely it is to stop. Having a doctor's reassurance about it maybe all thats needed to make it go away! Any chance it could be related to food e.g intolerance /eating something you aren't used to? Apparently pregnancy can have weird effects on food intolerances, and either make them disappear (as happened with my lactose intolerance, who-hooo!), or make them start up.

Sorry you had to go through this MM - sounds horrendous! I had a similar scare a couple of weeks ago (at 22 weeks iirc) where I had backache that came in waves, as well as diarrhea and general tenderness down there. I was convinced I was going into labour and spent the day torn between panicking and crying, and trying to rest so if it was labour, hopefully it would go away!

You're not crazy at all - its a natural reaction to worry about the symptoms of labour cropping up this early. I'd get it checked out with the midwife, or if you feel its a bit late for that, mention it at your next appointment.

Good advice from the others hun, would definately get it checked out, I think urinary infections are quite common? Hope its all ok xxxxxxx

Hi MM

I have terrible digestion verging on IBS. I have read this does not affect the baby's development and can actually improve when pg as happened to me. I know our intestines and colon get moved around significantly as the baby grows.

So i get cramps when I need the loo (sorry for TMI) but I don't know if this is like labour contractions because I haven't had a baby before but it can feel a bit like period pain sometimes so I think it could be digestive related esp if you have diarrhoea but no harm in seeig Dr if worried.

My MW told me to rest - take 2 paracetamol and lie down for 4 hours. If no change after that, then go in to get checked out.

Worked for me Whether it was premature labour or just backache, diarrhea and niggles I don't know, but either way it hasn't come back

Definately contact your M/w or GP just to be on the safe side !!My M/w said she would rather new mums call or go in to be checked out than sit at home worrying and you are obviously stressed about what is going on by your post.

Am calling the GP to make an appointment at 12 noon.... crazy system of you can only get an afternoon appointment if you call at 12.

so annoying just tried to make an appointment at docs for after work.... no such luck, why are they so ridiculous about appointments... have to call between 2.30-4.00.

If you are in work mixedmama, I hope it means you sre feeling better.

Don't stress about not getting a GP's appointment because if you do have a problem then they will refer you to the hospital. Most GP's have limited knowledge re problems in pregnancy.

I am not being disparaging re GPs, they are fine when dealing with the norm., but a good one refers when things aren't, and problems, concerns at 25 weeks is not the norm.

you are right i am just trying to avoid the hospital as i always feel like an imposter when phoning them - i know that is silly. will give them a call and go homme and pick up my notes i think and go down and see them.

Please get yourself checked out. I really don't mean to scare you but ds2 was a preemie because I had a UTI that I put down to "one of those things" and it kick started labour (and I haemorraghed). I was 35 weeks so a lot further on you but I really wish I'd gone to the GP and he wouldn't have come so early.
