No Boys Names! Starting to Panic...

Hi everyone,

Another name thread I'm afraid! I am 35 weeks pregnant and although I have a few girls names in mind, I am really struggling with boys names. I want something fairly unusual (not in the top 50ish) but not too 'out there'...

My initial choice was Seth - but DP isn't keen (says is sounds like a sssnake sound?).

Other possibilities are:

Montgomery (Monty)
Ivo (too bourgeois?)
Abraham (Abe, Abie)
Sonny
Ned
Clement (Clem)?
Seamus

Top choices for girls are:

Violet (Lettie)
Meredith (Edie)

I am worried at the lack of Wow factor for the boys. Is this necessary, or do you just end up completely loving the name any way?

Please help. Suggestions welcome; I am looking for suggestions rather than opinions, as I know that these names won't be to everyone's taste (puts fingers in ears and sings loudly).

Thanks in advance,

BVx

I like Ned, he is a proper blokey bloke I reckon. what about Nat or Nathaniel?

Howdydoody · 11/09/2007 11:41

If we had another boy I love the name Luca

bobsmum · 11/09/2007 11:44

If you do choose "Ned", never move to Scotland where it means "shell-suit wearing, sovereign ring sporting, spotty in articulate youth" without exception.

bobsmum · 11/09/2007 11:44

inarticulate

Filthymindedvixen · 11/09/2007 11:55

Have a few names in mind, but why not see what he looks like when he arrives? I say this having had fisticuffs and hair-tearing sessions with Dh over names. Eventually we found one we both liked. Finn. And when the baby came, we both agreed he just didn't look like a Finn. So we went back to the drawing board. Found one within a couple of days though...

belgo · 11/09/2007 11:58

I like Ivo/Yvo. And Ned.

ju · 11/09/2007 11:58

I wanted to call DS2 Ned but DP vetoed that. So we called him Murray (Scottish name, DP is Scottish). No other Murrays anywhere as far as I can tell, def not in the top 50 !

Rainbowdays · 11/09/2007 12:14

A few thoughts for more unusual but not outer-space names would be:

Gabriel
Isaac (Zac)
Tobias (toby)
Nathaniel (Nat)
Jude
Zaccaria (Zac)
Kellan
Laban

I think the baby gives the wow factor, and they grow into any name you give them!

nailpolish · 11/09/2007 12:17

Seamus is fab

MrsBoo · 11/09/2007 12:19

I didn't have any boys names either - was convinced i was having a girl.
Poor wee DS didn't get a name until he was about 3 days old.
It was only after I had it registered, that i remembered i wanted to call him Sebastiaan (Seb)

mazzystar · 11/09/2007 12:20

i rather think a wow factor in a baby's name is to be avoided at all costs.

if i ever have another boy he will be called either Angus or Eddie. or maybe Duncan.

but like Sonny, Ivo and Abe too. And Ned could be abbreviated from Edward which gives him more options should he ever want to play for Rangers.

kittylouise · 11/09/2007 12:25

Stan
Arthur
Ned (I love Ned)
Wilf
Archie
Eddie
Felix

Or more exotic...

Hector
Inigo
Jago
Lucius
Samson
Rufus

nailpolish · 11/09/2007 12:28

i quite like Frank

bobsmum · 11/09/2007 12:28

BBC comedy Chewin' the Fat has this to say about Neds:

Clary · 11/09/2007 12:31

love your first list kittylouise!

Stanley
Sidney
Miles
Angus
Edwin

bobsmum · 11/09/2007 12:32

mazzystar - lol at Ned playing for Rangers

bundle · 11/09/2007 12:33

Ned is really nice

funnypeculiar · 11/09/2007 12:36

I like Ivo & Ned best
I think Ivo's pretty wow, personally

Twinkie1 · 11/09/2007 12:37

I liked Felix, Hugo and Tobias - but he came out and was a Max!

I work for an Ivo - he is Dutch but is a lovely man.

kittylouise · 11/09/2007 12:40

Thanks Clary!

Do you think it is a good reason to persuade my DP I want another baby after a 12 year break, just to use one of those names!!

HighlandFling · 11/09/2007 12:42

My friend has just called her new baby boy Laurie, which I think is lovely.

Who said Inigo? My name, my name, I got there first (if I can get it past DH which I have SERIOUS doubts about!!).

I read some article once with a psychologist saying the thing to do with names, to check they are not too 'out there' is to imagine them on the Board of the Bank of England. If you can, then it's an OK name!

nailpolish · 11/09/2007 12:48

ou cant call your son Ned
might as well call him Chav

bobsmum · 11/09/2007 12:49

I've tried to explain that NP, but no-one's listening!

Peachy · 11/09/2007 12:53

'bit of a ned'- somerset phrase as well. So would skip that!

Sonny was my old cat.
Abraham nice, Montgomeery OK as long as not likely to attend rough state primary
clement- no
Seamus- not too bad

kittylouise · 11/09/2007 12:53

Is Ned really a chav name. Really? That one completely passed me by!
