I can't buy a thermometer for my baby

I'm due to have my first baby soon and need to buy a thermometer to have at home just in case. Everywhere seems to be sold out in the madness and I'm now in tears because I can't get one anywhere. What am I going to do if my baby falls ill and I need to take her temperature? I was looking at the Braun ones initially as I read that they're good, but would settle for anything that works at this point.

Why has there been a run on baby thermometers - surely people don't need any more of them than usual?!

I’ve been looking for a thermometer all over town today but none to be had and no chance of ordering either. Came home and found one on eBay which is coming next Monday. If you look online check delivery time first as some are saying May! Good luck OP

I just looked on amazon and they have one...
Nuk baby thermometer 2 in 1. £24.99.
Says it is in stock x

sjmco · 17/03/2020 14:00

What about this? It's a grooming set but brings a thermometer and it's currently in stock.

That’s good - sometimes in my experience it sometimes says in stock but once you order delivery can be weeks away

cucumber66 · 17/03/2020 14:02

I just looked for the Nuk thermometer on Amazon and they're now out of stock. What am I going to do?

Type what you want in to google, loads of places have them online.

CrabbitArse · 17/03/2020 14:07

Tommie Tippie set above is still in stock on Amazon Prime £14

Cucumber don't panic. You'll know if your baby has a temp or is unwell. Lips on forehead the best thermometer there is for mums. You'll be fine even if you can't get one

babysnowman · 17/03/2020 14:07

What @sjmco said, there's a thermometer in that pack

Ohwhatbliss · 17/03/2020 14:12

You'll find one, please don't panic. And if you don't (you will!) I have two kids and I've never taken either of their temperaturesBlush honestly, as others have said you'll know when they are running a temperature and they're unwell. I can smell it on my two Grin

Ilovechocolate01 · 17/03/2020 14:12

NUK has its own website have you tried there? Delivery is a few days. If you can't get one feel the baby's chest area (not forehead) not ideal but may give you an idea

dementedpixie · 17/03/2020 14:13

You can tell if they have a temperature by them looking flushed, sweaty and feeling hot to the touch.

cucumber66 · 17/03/2020 14:14

@sjmco do you have a link? Sorry - I'm being useless but I can't find it anywhere

I've sent you a PM @cucumber66

ScouseMar · 17/03/2020 14:19

There were loads on eBay (new ones) just select UK seller so it doesn't take too long to come from the Far East!

I ordered one today , says it's coming Monday.

MsChatterbox · 17/03/2020 14:21

My son is 2 and I've never used a thermometer on him. Like pp said you can tell if they've got a temp!

crustycrab · 17/03/2020 14:28

How soon?

I've personally never used one. You know if they've got a temperature.

But I know of new mothers who have babies and children now that can't get a thermometer. If you've 6 months to go then wait and let the people who need it now have it. Stocks will replenish

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/03/2020 14:31

You know if they have a temp. BTW if you plan to BF, breasts adjust their temperature based on if the baby has a temp. Skin to skin and BFing really helps.

yikesanotherbooboo · 17/03/2020 14:34

Try not to worry, it's far from essential. At most they can be useful.

UsernameUnknownn · 17/03/2020 14:37

If you have a Morrison's near you go to the children's medicine bit and see if they have a character thermometer. Some people don't think about checking there as normal ones are kept by the pharmacy.
Under the armpit ones are meant to be the best ones apparently.

Asiama · 17/03/2020 14:39

OP please don't worry. As a PP said there are other ways you can tell if a baby is unwell. We struggled to get a normal reading with ours as he was so wriggly and only at 16 months did we invest in an in-ear thermometer (we found the NUK 2-1 not good by the way and got a Braun one instead).

tryingtogrowarosegarden · 17/03/2020 14:40

Have you tried your local pharmacy, my sister picked one up in hers yesterday and they had plenty of stock.

Spam88 · 17/03/2020 14:43

It's so hard to take a baby's temperature until they're big enough for the in-ear ones anyway so I wouldn't worry. Although the underarm ones like the tommee Tippee one above is what you should be using if you do want one (I've never managed to keep my LO still long enough to get a reading on ours though).

PenguinsOnParade · 17/03/2020 14:44

If you have one of those larger corner shops with totally random £1 or discount sections then they might have them. Ours have a few.
