I'm only 13 weeks and have an urge to start buying the essentials, is it too early?

When did everyone else start buying things. Xx

After the 20 week scan came back clear. You're still quite early on, so personally I wouldn't at your gestation.

Leha94 · 26/01/2020 06:52

I think it's entirely personal!! If you're like me and like to have everything prepared for when baby arrives, you'll want to start buying some stuff sooner rather than later.
I bought my pram when I was 15 weeks because it was an amazing deal then starting buying clothes after about 22 weeks roughly. I'm 33+5 now and have almost everything bought and organised and I feel so much more relaxed about it 😊

DisinterestedParty · 26/01/2020 06:55

It's totally personal. I was buying stuff up to my due date but I know others had everything done by 30 weeks.

With online shopping, it's not like you need to be massively prepared these days as most stuff can be delivered within a day or two.

Personally I wouldn't and didn't buy anything til after the anomaly scan though.

crazycatlady7 · 26/01/2020 07:08

We were given a lot of hand me downs which started arriving around 20 weeks, we then started buying more towards the end.... I think the last 3 months we budgeted each pay day to buy what we needed.

Oct18mummy · 26/01/2020 07:18

6/7 months

MsChatterbox · 26/01/2020 07:21

Before my first scan Grin

whatswithtodaytoday · 26/01/2020 07:22

Nothing at all until 20 weeks. After that only eBay bargains until about 32 weeks, when we're started getting the nursery together. I had severe anxiety though.

collywobblescar · 26/01/2020 07:24

Didn't start until 30 weeks. You're still so early, get your 20 week scan out the way first

OhTheRoses · 26/01/2020 07:28

My eldest is 25. I worked until 34 weeks and bought everything the following week which was absolutely fine. Baby arrived at 36.3!

My only advice would be to have things like the pram and car seat set up in advance and make sure you know how to use them.

I don't remember buying masses: pram and carrycot, cot, top and tail bowl, sheets and blankets, muslins, soft bibs, vests, babygros, cardigans.

Caspianberg · 26/01/2020 07:33

After 20 weeks here, 26+ now and have just had main bits ordered and waiting delivery in the next few weeks and have bought some clothes, nappies etc... have a wish list going, will probably do a final order from it for anything remaining around 32 ish weeks

BelfastNonBlonde · 26/01/2020 07:49

I’m 23 weeks and haven’t bought anything yet.
We’re going on holiday next month so maybe after that - around 30 weeks onwards.

I’m not intending to buy very much though, only the absolute basics to take baby home. Ie baby grows, something to sleep in and nappies and food (if not breastfeeding). Don’t think baby will need much more than that for a few weeks at least anyway!

I don’t want to go out and buy a load of stuff in advance and then not need or use it. Would rather buy something when it becomes apparent it is needed or would be useful.

yikesanotherbooboo · 26/01/2020 07:56

I bought the bare essentials in the weeks after I stopped work (32 weeks) .

Rosehip345 · 26/01/2020 07:57

Whenever you like! I’m 30wks and currently have one baby grow!

Shmithecat2 · 26/01/2020 07:57

I bought one pack of 3 vests after my 20 week scan, and then nothing else until 35 weeks.

williams345 · 26/01/2020 07:59

From about 10 week I had to start early to be able to afford it all lol

dwum · 26/01/2020 08:05

At 7 months.

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 26/01/2020 08:09

About 17 weeks I started buying clothes in the boxing day sales. 22 weeks and I've painted the nursery and got the cot & wardrobe up, just because I do the DIY in our house and I did it whilst I had 2 weeks off over Christmas cus I actually had some spare energy! Started buying nappies & wipes everytime I visit Aldi to break down the bulk a little

FilthyPout · 26/01/2020 08:13

About 35 weeks last time!
Currently 23 weeks and still haven't started buying anything yet. I've started putting money aside and will probably start getting everything after the 30 week mark. I have pretty bad anxiety and there's just something in the back of my head telling me it's way too early yet.
There is no right or wrong time, start buying whenever is right for you.

VDM1420 · 26/01/2020 08:13

I bought my first thing at 10 weeks (baby bath as it was in a deal) but then nothing else until after the gender scan.

Nelbert19 · 26/01/2020 08:31

We’re 14 weeks and have bought most things! January sales + mothercare closing down clearance = bargains I didn’t want to miss
Saying that, I’m a bit extreme on the organising/planning spectrum so am likely to have everything ready before getting into the 3rd trimester because I can’t stop myself!

Caspianberg · 26/01/2020 08:34

We are also buying bare essentials, but to me nappies and sleepsuits don't cut it alone. We 'need' a car seat to actually even get home and then out and about, we 'need' at least a sling or pram to go out with them, we 'need' somewhere for them to sleep, basic bedding, blankets, etc.... And for me I will need ' maternity pads, breastpads, etc'
A sleepsuit and nappies and boob isn't all the essentials for most.

Kezmum14 · 26/01/2020 08:37

I’m waiting until after my 20 week scan.
I have 2 friends that were told that their baby wouldn’t survive at this point. I know it’s a bit morbid but on a practical level I don’t want to be returning things or have things in the house bought for a baby that I may never get to bring home. X

Millettmum · 26/01/2020 08:48

I'm 17+3 and I've bought quite a bit because of the sales etc and it was a bit of a distraction for me too.

HSunflower · 26/01/2020 08:58

We are 14 weeks today, and we have been buying little things from quite early on.
I definitely use it as a distraction, but also with the sales, it's really hard not to. Plus is am an organiser and would love to have everything prepped and ready 💛

I think it's a personal choice, so I would just purchase items when you feel ready to do so.

chernise22 · 26/01/2020 09:11

Thankyou everyone!

As a lot of you have said I've noticed there's loads of sales and baby events! But on the other hand very nervous that I'll buy stuff and something may happen to baby and I'll have to deal with it all afterwards.

I just don't know !

My excitement sometimes takes over aswell!

Xx
