Pregnancy

Placenta Previa, please ease my anxiety

Hi all
So, 20 week scan yesterday, baby perfect. Sonographer casually mentioned placenta is blocking the exit, covering the os. Had no idea what he was on about, just happy baby was okay. He said it can increase the risk of needing a section, I'm having a planned section anyhow so didn't think anything of it. Had a 2 minute after appointment with a midwife who said any bleeding I must immediately come into hospital, if it's heavy then 999 ambulance. I was a bit shocked to ask any questions and she hurried me out of the door saying I'd have a scan at 30 weeks and hopefully it's not previa anymore.
I promised myself I would not Google.
So obviously I googled last night and I am now a complete mess of anxiety. Convinced myself if I have sex or a long walk I'm going to bleed out and die on the spot leaving my beautiful 3 year old daughter and husband behind.
I've had a tough start to this pregnancy with HG and it had finally eased up and I was enjoying my life again. Now I'm terrified. I can't find out if I should rest/avoid sex etc NOW or if it hasn't changed by next scan.
Please can anyone share/comfort/virtual shake me?

Wanna hear something funny? This will totally out me but here goes nothing.

Before my diagnosis, around 18 weeks, I was on holiday in Greece. My daughter decided she wanted to do parasailing with my partner. All was well until he decided he couldn't as he was scared of heights. My daughter has (we think) autism so any change will create a meltdown. So there I am, 18 weeks pregnant, parasailing after hiding my bump. THAT in itself was stupid enough. You can imagine how I felt after getting the diagnosis. So much could have gone wrong!

I obviously wouldn't have done that with a placenta previa diagnosis lol.

Once I got that, I wrapped myself up in cotton wool Blush

All good here, going to book a private scan in. Apparently they only keep you in with a bleed here so life continues as normal and I'm ignoring it Smile

Great!! I'm alot more chill too. Also, asked my midwife today about orgasms blush as the hospital midwife had said no penetration double blush but "other stuff" was fine. My midwife wasn't sure so contacted the hospital (honestly I felt like such a sex pesk) who rang me and said orgasms are absolutely fine and there's no risk of orgasm causing a bleed, only penetration as that can irritate things. Good to know that other intimacies are allowed!

When will your private scan be @Snowbear20? I can't keep up, how many weeks are you now? I'm 22

Just a quick update from me.
Had my 36 week scan today and placenta is still only 1.8cm away from OS, so C-section it shall be. I'm being booked in to have it between 38-39 weeks.
It is far from what I hoped as the thought of a section genuinely terrifies me BUT I just wanted to hopefully provide you some reassurance that I've made it to 36 weeks, still no episodes of bleeding (yet...still don't want to jinx it) and no mention of being hospitalised prior to the section. I have literally carried on with normal life (apart from sex) so far with no issues. I do the school run, I've done some serious nesting/cleaning, worked up till last week and driving out places alone (although yesterday I did feel a bit too far afield if something did happen!).
I honestly felt like you @MamaBearThius at the beginning when I found out at my 20 week scan but I hope that if the odds turn out to be against you too, it doesn't have to be a total disaster. Wishing you to be the 9 in 10 that do move though Wink

Thanks for checking in @Piratepearl! So relieved and pleased for you that you haven't had a bleed. When is your section? I know it's far from ideal but honestly mine even as a semi emergency 3 years ago was so calm and lovely. Bit scary at first as theatre is so cold and shiny but you'll soon be holding your baby!

No bleeds here still, ended up having a manic week at work so delayed the private scan Sad how are you getting on?

How many weeks are you now? Pleased no bleeds! None for me, although I'm awake in the middle of the worst stomach bug I've ever had ever. Feeling incredibly sorry for myself

Mama bear with my first pregnancy my placenta was completely covering the O/S. I had another scan at 31 weeks and it had completely moved out the way. I never had any bleeds during my pregnancy and DD is now 2.

Just over 28 weeks now! The main thing making me nervous is that i have an anterior placenta too so I'm a little concerned about a C sec in that situation if it doesn't move.

That sounds awful, is it food related do you think?

@Snowbear20 ah yes but Anterior means more chance of it moving beforehand doesn't it? Mine is posterior so another odd stacked against me! But more likely a smoother section. No idea what has made me so poorly, hours of being violently sick though. Feel really hot and weak now, will see if I can manage to hydrate today but I'll call maternity if not and see what they say.

Hi all. I have a posterior placenta previa. I'm not sure how much but we have a consultant appointment on Tuesday so I guess I'll find out more then. Be nice to go through this journey with someone else. I'm 22+4

Welcome to the stupid placenta club! What's the appointment for if you don't mind me asking? Only I met consultant at 12weeks and not heard about seeing her again. How's your pregnancy so far? It is weirdly comforting isn't it that someone else is going through similar

It's for the placenta position. I'm assuming my trust must only refer you if it's still low at the 20 week scan. Did you get a referal on your 12 week scan?
We saw 3 different sonographers for our 20 week scan (it took 4 attempts total to see all of baby because they're a big mover) and not one of them said the risks of a low lying placenta or that I'll be referred! Nothing was said at the 12 week scan either so until I got the consultant appointment letter I didn't even know there was an issue. The admin staff at the hospital were lovely on the phone when I rang up panicking about why I was seeing the consultant and told me the sonographer should have mentioned it to me and also said if I bleed I need to go in straight away but that's obviously as much as they could tell me.
I have a whole other issue with not being able to see my medical records (my trust use an app and my app isn't working and someone's been 'trying to sort it' for weeks) so I can't even check my notes to see how much of it is covering my cervix.
It's all very fustrating! Sorry for my rant haha

MamaBearThius · 16/02/2020 17:38

Oh wow no please feel free to rant! I'm a carer, and when everything switched to digital it broke my poor brain! Things are much simpler when hand written! Mine wasn't found at 12 week scan, infact I understand it's not looked for until 20 week. It's strange how calm the sonographer and midwives are about it isn't it and then you read the internet and find how scary it is! Keep us posted after your appointment, be interesting to see what it's for! I've got usual midwife appointment on Thursday and nothing at the hospital until 32 weeks. Is this your first?

@MrssC92 mine wasn't even picked up til the 20 week scan!

I think anterior is a higher chance of moving BUT could mean its stuck in my previous c sec scar which is really not ideal. Midwife is still being very relaxed so following suit as much as possible Smile

@MamaBear are you feeling any better?

@MamaBearThius hope you're feeling better.
I'm now 37+2 and still hanging on in here. Have still managed to not have had any bleeding yet ... I'm still waiting for a phone call from the hospital hopefully this week to give me a date of when the C-Section will be the following week. Time seems to have virtually stopped and I just want to get to it now!
