I'll start this by saying I know it's going to be different for everyone depending on the type of birth they had but assuming all was well with the baby how long were you kept in for before you were allowed home?

Was chatting to my mum last night and it came up that most people I know have stayed at least overnight whereas in her day if people had their baby in the early hours they'd be out same day.

36 hrs - she was born at 11am

MAndSReadyMealForOne · 13/01/2020 16:39

I was out same day, baby born in the early 2000’s. Vaginal birth, early hours delivery, full term, uncomplicated.

Lipperfromchipper · 13/01/2020 16:40

Two nights, had dd on sat night, I went home Tuesday afternoon. I suppose if we’re being technical then 3 nights-straightforward birth.

Mrshue · 13/01/2020 16:40

8 months.

DesLynamsMoustache · 13/01/2020 16:42

Next day, emergency section. But we were told at antenatal classes that with a straightforward vaginal birth and healthy baby we could be out after six hours or so.

Goodnightjude1 · 13/01/2020 16:42

DD was born at 2am and I was home by 9am. Uncomplicated pregnancy and delivery.

FilthyPout · 13/01/2020 16:45

DS born at 4am we were home by 1.30pm same day. It wouldve been quicker but I had to wait til 8am to go to the ward, then chose to wait for DS to be checked over by the doctor rather than go home and come back for the check

yadayadayesokay · 13/01/2020 16:46

6 nights including the first night I was labouring. Had a forceps delivery, PPH & suspected infection for me & baby though.

evertonlady · 13/01/2020 16:47

I was in labour in hospital for about 12 hours and then sent home 4 hours. Way too soon but it was my first and I was in complete shock

Aquamarine1029 · 13/01/2020 16:48

My first was born at 3:30am and we left by noon. I felt great and just wanted to get the hell out of the hospital and back home.

7dayslater · 13/01/2020 16:49

8 hours. 4 of those spent waiting for the newborn physical examiner as it was a very busy ward.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 13/01/2020 16:50

4 days but I had pre eclampsia and dd had low blood sugar.

balonzz · 13/01/2020 16:51

One week, although everything was fine. In those days, the hospital made all new mothers stay in a week, and no fathers allowed to stay with them either.

MrsL2016 · 13/01/2020 16:51

DS was born at 8.30am but needed 12 hours monitoring so couldn't be discharged the same day. Left mid afternoon the next day. So 30 ish hours after he was born.

Raffles1981 · 13/01/2020 16:52

Went in early hours of Monday morning, C Section (emergency) Tuesday morning and home by Friday pm. But we were back in Sat afternoon until Monday morning as baby was underweight.

OrangeHue · 13/01/2020 16:54

@Mrshue 8 months?!

Aurorie11 · 13/01/2020 16:54

From start of labour to discharge 18 hours, no beds on post-natal ward so kicked out from delivery suite late 2000s. Second two years later different hospital 7 hoursish from arriving having been bluelighted from MLU to discharge

snowgirl1 · 13/01/2020 16:55

Had DD at 7.30am and was being monitored for something (can't remember what!) so had to stay in for 24 hours. By the time I was released it was lunchtime the day after I'd had DD. I was desperate to go home.

Fluffballs · 13/01/2020 16:57

Last year, born at 8:30 am, home at 9 PM.
But it was induced so had stayed in the night before.

Mamabear88 · 13/01/2020 16:58

My DD was born 8:30am, I stayed overnight as had an emergency c-section and went home the next evening. They did want me to stay another night but I self-discharged as I really couldn't face another night on the post natal ward (it was horrible) and a 4th night of no sleep (i'd been in labour the 1st two and then didn't sleep a wink in the hospital). Also i'd ran out of stuff for me and baby so definitely pack more than you think you'll need just in case.

Soontobe60 · 13/01/2020 16:58

5days for the first 34 years ago, 7 for the second 10 years later

Pipandmum · 13/01/2020 16:59

I think these days if it's a straightforward birth they want you out same day. I was born (60s) when the average stay was about 4 days which dropped to two days by mid 90s to same day now.

JaneDarcy · 13/01/2020 17:00

24 hours. In at 1pm ish, baby arrived at 5ish, left the next day at about lunch time. I'd have been gone at 9am but various checks took a while

HangryCaterpillar · 13/01/2020 17:01

About 3 hours, at a stand alone midwife led unit.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 13/01/2020 17:01

I wasn't, he was born at home.

As you say it depends but even for a straightforward birth with no issues and feeding well it just takes time because many hospitals are very busy and because staff need to prioritise the unwell it can take hours for the necessary checks and paperwork. Plus of course if your baby is born in the evening then a quick discharge would mean you going home in the early hours of the morning so staff may advise staying the night, especially in winter although it isn't a prison and if you wanted to go home at 2am for a 6 hour discharge then staff should facilitate that for you.
