I'll start this by saying I know it's going to be different for everyone depending on the type of birth they had but assuming all was well with the baby how long were you kept in for before you were allowed home?

Was chatting to my mum last night and it came up that most people I know have stayed at least overnight whereas in her day if people had their baby in the early hours they'd be out same day.

Also, I notice a lot of posters have said that years ago it was standard to stay in hospital for a week or more after birth. Why has that changed - is it lack of funding or some other reason?

About 18 hours from admitting to going home for DS1. 24 hours for DS2 including adimssion for for induction. 4 nights for DD including induction on the first night.

One night

Went in at 11pm Thursday night, had dd at 3 on the Friday, had to stay in for 24 hour monitoring as I had Group B strep in pregnancy. Discharged at 7pm on the Saturday.

DC was born at 1am- quick birth arrived at 12.30am.... he needed checks for 24hrs... self discharged the following evening at 7.30pm as they wanted to do feeding checks but kept missing them due to staffing issues... I couldn't sleep as woman on bed next to me was very noisy so just wanted to go home. Was in for about 35hrs in total with birth.

One week.

I was due to be induced but because of the amount of emergency cases had to wait 5 days. When baby was born was made to wait an extra 2 days as DD had a heart murmur and needed to see a consultant.

Consultant came day after birth to see us but in an administrative cock up was turned away by the Ward nurses so we had an extra nights stay. We were then told we would have to wait another night to see the consultant as he was not free. We threatened to discharge ourselves and within 5 mins the nurses arranged for him to see us. All was well with DD and we left 20 mins later. Turned out consultant had made numerous efforts to see us but the Ward kept turning him away, saying we were not there (when we never left!)

Less than 24hrs. Born at 2pm, out at the next day at midday. I'd had quite a few stitches and there was a bit of concern about PPH so the midwife wanted me to stay overnight. I did get asked if I wanted to stay longer (there was only 2 other mums on the post natal ward of 14 beds). I'd have loved to 😂. But I had no need to really.

Baby born at 4.30am, home by 3pm. We hung around to get the paediatric check done and to register them with the onsite registrar.

I had really straightforward births with both of mine, no tears, all went amazingly, I was very lucky. My son was born at 10:07am and I was home by 3pm the same day and my daughter was born at 17:43pm and I was home by 11pm the same day.

A week - has forceps delivery, PPH and some admin cock up with blood transfusion. Baby fine though so could have gone home pretty soon if it weren't for me (and the admin mess).

Went in at 2am on the Friday morning. Baby born 2.30am Saturday. Left the hospital 6pm Sunday 😊

6 days after Emergency C-cection. Because of trying to establish BF, which ultimately failed :-( and went home to bottle feeding. Very sad about that, and blame having extremely inconsistent help - each MW on post-labour ward, changing each shift, giving different advice, or none. I know that with the right help/advice we could have done it.

A week. Had a forceps delivery, infection, high temp. I had hallucinations of things like being hit by flies.

Gammeldragz · 15/01/2020 11:36

6 hours after the birth. I'd planned a home birth but had to go in as it took forever, even after breaking my waters. I'd had an epidural as well. I insisted on going home so they sent the Dr round to check us over and let us out at midnight. I was only 20! But we'd got straight I to breastfeeding and all was fine so no issues.
