I'll start this by saying I know it's going to be different for everyone depending on the type of birth they had but assuming all was well with the baby how long were you kept in for before you were allowed home?

Was chatting to my mum last night and it came up that most people I know have stayed at least overnight whereas in her day if people had their baby in the early hours they'd be out same day.

Thanks all. A huge mixture!
Sounds like midwife led units get you out quicker. Unfortunately I'm consultant led and they already want paeds to check baby when she's here so doubt I'll get a speedy discharge even if uncomplicated.

As someone said post natal wards are meant to be hell on earth so I'd like to get home as soon as possible. May need to rethink the epidural Wink

I was in Monday to Friday .. but had her on the Wednesday as it was a failed induction and I had a section.

Drogonssmile · 13/01/2020 18:42

I was home five hours after he was born.

PortiaCastis · 13/01/2020 18:42

6 hours, gave birth in an ambulance in the hospital car park so was a bit shocked and wasn't sure what was going on but went home when we'd both been checked over and I had calmed down a bit as for some reason I couldn't stop laughing.....
My Mum had me at home and also had a fast labour she said it was a couple of hours and she got up for her dinner a little later

I went into hospital around 11:30am on the Tuesday, DD was born (vaginally, with forceps) at 2:02am on the Wednesday, we were moved to the post natal ward at 8am and we were there until 1pm on the Thursday (we were waiting for the hearing check to be done on DD and for my blood pressure to be checked as it gone sky high during labour)

SapphosRock · 13/01/2020 18:44

About 6 hours. She was born at 1.30pm and we were home that evening.

Couldn't believe they let us home so soon tbh! Felt a bit shell shocked.

Labour started at 10p.m on a Tuesday night, straight to hospital, as was normal because it was so far away. Baby born in good health on the Friday morning and we went home 5 days later , which was normal then. It was fantastic

fluffyjumper · 13/01/2020 18:53

I had him at home on Tuesday at 20.23 but gained a 3rd degree tear. So off to hospital I went and straight to theatre. I stayed until wednesday evening. I was told they normally want 3rd degree tears to stay another night. But dr was happy I'm a nurse and knew what to needing doing.

amaryl · 13/01/2020 18:58

5 nights
6 if you include the labour
Not really sure why
Think they forgot about me

A long while ago now, but DS1 was born just after midnight on Thursday & we went home at lunchtime on Saturday.

I had DS2 in the early hours of Tuesday and we went home later the same day. DS3 was a home birth, which was lovely. Own bed, own shower - bliss.

zen1 · 13/01/2020 18:58

1 week (17 years ago). Baby was fine, but I lost a lot of blood and they didn’t realise for a couple of days when they did a blood test.

mulkshake · 13/01/2020 18:58

First baby was a section - 6 days

Second baby was natural - 12 hours

Lauren83 · 13/01/2020 19:04

C section 24 hours, 2nd c section 48 but only as DS was unwell and they needed to give him IV antibiotics

Spam88 · 13/01/2020 19:06

Having had one birth with and one without an epidural, definitely do not rethink the epidural!

HarryHarry · 13/01/2020 19:07

Me 3 nights, him 3 weeks (collapsed lung).

Seeline · 13/01/2020 19:11

Went in the Tuesday night, DS born Friday morning. I was discharged on the Wednesday after a blood transfusion. DS was discharged from special care on the following Friday, so a week old.

With my second she was born in the afternoon, we both went home mid morning the next day. It was the weekend so took longer to be checked before discharge.

HB2019 · 13/01/2020 19:11

I had baby at home but went in for a repair, was in surgery 10minutes after arriving, up and about 9hrs later but couldn't feed baby. Stayed for 3.5 days trying to establish breastfeeding. If I'd have given formula I'd have been out much much sooner.

insancerre · 13/01/2020 19:13

5 days for a normal delivery
That was in 1989

Ribeebie · 13/01/2020 19:17

Went in at 8pm and left for home at 5am. Baby born at half one.

PPopsicle · 13/01/2020 19:25

1 week

NemophilistRebel · 13/01/2020 19:25

5 nights

PPopsicle · 13/01/2020 19:26

And no idea where this ‘hell on earth’ is about post natal wards. Mine was delightful and I couldn’t have asked for more

Musmerian · 13/01/2020 19:29

@balonzz - hospitals can’t ‘make’ you stay - they’re not prisons and you can choose to leave whenever you like.

Mummyme87 · 13/01/2020 19:29

So you can leave as soon as you’re ready after giving birth as long as all is well, no observations for baby, you have passed urine, you had no medical problems like high BP, blood loss normal, feeding baby confidently.

I have discharged 2.5hrs after birth. I would say on average for a quick discharge it’s 4-5hrs. Baby will need a newborn examination but they need to be at least 6hours old. A lot of units can do that on community or have an outpatient appt system for that. It needs to be done within 72hrs.

I would say I’m my experience first babies, mums usually stay 12-24hours, depending on time of birth.

Mummyme87 · 13/01/2020 19:32

With my first baby I had an emergency CS, I was poorly so was discharged on day 6, DS1 was in NNU with meningitis so he was discharged on day 11 and we came back everyday for antibiotics until he was 3weeks old.

DS2 was a normal birth with a 3rd degree tear and 2.5L PPH. I delivered at 1am Sunday, got back to my room after theatre at 5am and was discharged at midday n the Monday. I was desperate to go. My consultant really wanted me to stay another night but I was insistent I would be better at home, I’m also a midwife
