Can't take folic acid

Ellielouisejxo · 10/01/2020 21:13

I've found out I'm pregnant and I can't take tablets. I'm 6 weeks pregnant but can't swallow any tablets I have tried taking the prenecare liquid but I throw up even at the smell, I've tried to take it and threw up within minutes of taking it.
I'm getting really worried over it

Crush up the tablets and mix them with a teaspoon of jam and eat that?

Eats lots of foods that are naturally rich in folic acid ? info here, also about cooking

MaisieMolly · 10/01/2020 21:18

What about really small tablets? The seven seas conception tablets contain folic acid and are really tiny. I find it easier to take tablets mid meal, as your throat is used to swallowing because it’s just been doing food.

YourOpinionIsNoted · 10/01/2020 21:20

Try to eat foods rich in folic acid instead. Sympathies OP, I always wanted to barf when taking mine.

SexlessBoulderBelly · 10/01/2020 21:22

Put it in a sandwich then eat the sandwich you won’t even know where abouts it is in there lol

frankincenseandmur · 10/01/2020 21:23

Try food rich in folic acid

GrumpyHoonMain · 10/01/2020 21:24

Swallow them down with a really sweet drink an hour or two after meals. Squash worked for me

BlueCookieMonster · 10/01/2020 21:26

They do vitamin patches on amazon, might be worth a look. X

Tallilah · 10/01/2020 21:29

For what it’s worth I didn’t find I was pregnant til 12 weeks and by then the folic acid was out pf it’s prime period. Not suggesting that you don’t take it if you can but I couldn’t (surprise baby) and he’s fine

lljkk · 10/01/2020 21:32

What can you reliably swallow, OP?

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 10/01/2020 22:08

Have you looked at the simple tablets containing only folic acid? Many of them are really really tiny, would you be able to manage the very small ones? Mine were miniscule, 3-4mm I think.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 10/01/2020 22:09

The pregnacare liquid is grimmers, I couldn't take it either

stripeypillowcase · 10/01/2020 22:12

is it because you can't swallow tablets or because of a gag sensation?good advice already above about taking tablets

Dyra · 10/01/2020 22:12

When are you taking them? Trying to take my tablets in the morning just resulted in them coming back up. Taking them anywhere from lunch time to dinner time meant they stayed down.

Bol87 · 10/01/2020 22:15

Get the Seven Seas trying for a baby tablets. They have 200% folic acid in them. And are tiny, like the size of the pill.

Pop the tablet into something?! Squash it into a piece of cake? A sandwich? A slice of bread.. or crush it onto a spoon and swallow the powder? I used to take paracetamol like that as a kid!

I weirdly have to fill my mouth with water/squash and then pop a tablet into the water and swallow. I can’t do it if I put the tablet in first & then drink.. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Folic acid is really important, it’s proven to hugely reduce the occurrence of spina bifida. Try get it down you if you can, it’s for baby. You sound very sensitive to throwing up something you don’t like - can you hold your nose and neck the liquid?! I’ve been taking prescribed liquid iron this pregnancy & it smells & tastes revolting. But I just grin & bear it and make sure I have a strong juice ready to immediately drink afterwards!

Nightmanagerfan · 10/01/2020 22:20

You can get liquid folic acid - I know because my son was prescribed it. Worth asking your doctor

Elieza · 10/01/2020 22:27

Chew a mouthful of food until you are ready to swallow, pop the pill in and crack on. Works for me. Can’t swallow pills otherwise. The folic acid only ones on prescription are tiny.

annlee3817 · 10/01/2020 22:29

Pregnacare made me sick, I just took folic acid that also contained vitamin d, just boots own. Small tablets, avoided pregnacare for the rest of the pregnancy and had sanatogen mum to be instead from 14 weeks or so

Bluerussian · 10/01/2020 22:33

You don't have to take folic acid as long as you eat well. I took no dietary supplements whilst pregnant and was perfectly healthy as was my baby, mind you I ate like a horse. However someone above says you can buy liquid folic acid so you could try that if you think you need it.

LH1987 · 10/01/2020 22:39

As pp have said mid it with food, to make it easier buy a pill crusher from amazon.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 10/01/2020 22:47

"You don't have to take folic acid as long as you eat well"

This is incorrect. It's incredibly difficult to get the right amount of folic acid from food alone.

But, you can increase your intake of marmite, eggs, and various other folate rich foods, as well as folic acid enriched bread. This can help, but it's best to try to take the tablets if you possibly can.

Bluerussian - it's irresponsible to give advice based on 'my baby is fine, so don't worry too much'

Ellielouisejxo · 10/01/2020 23:11

Hey everyone thanks for your messages ! I don't know what it is about tablets no matter the size I just cannot swallow them. I really wish I could my life would be a lot easier!
I'm trying to eat loads of citrus fruits as I know they contain folate but I know it's very hard to absorb all the daily allowance I'm just so worried about my little one not getting what they need as I can't swallow a stupid tablet !

Not trying to scare you but the folic acid recommendation is in addition to the folate in your diet. You can’t get those amounts in diet alone. Suggest you just try different ways of taking the tablets or try different tablets until you find a way that works - suggest you google tips recommended by women with HG and try everything. That’s where I got my swallow it down in sweet drink trick.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 10/01/2020 23:36

Eggs too, baked potatoes and beans, dark green vegetables (brocolli, asparagus etc).

Marmite is the best dietary source, as far as I can tell. 120 µg per 8g serving.

Emberfoot · 10/01/2020 23:49

I couldn't take tablets as a teen until I practised by swallowing tictacs. They don't taste foul if you do choke then. Maybe a thought? GL.

Iheardit · 11/01/2020 10:46

I couldn’t swallow tablets. I am now much better. But at first I would get a really thick smoothie. Take a big mouthful and then slip the tablet In, tip my head back in a dramatic fashion and swallow. I threw up lots to start. I couldn’t pop a tablet out of the packet without vomiting To start with (post chemotherapy trauma) . I can now take tablets :)
