Can't take folic acid

I've found out I'm pregnant and I can't take tablets. I'm 6 weeks pregnant but can't swallow any tablets I have tried taking the prenecare liquid but I throw up even at the smell, I've tried to take it and threw up within minutes of taking it.
I'm getting really worried over it

Look for the tiniest folic acid tablets you can find with a coating on them. It will help them slip down! Sometimes they come in a pot rather than a blister pack.

Have you tried liquid first then putting the tablet into your mouth full of liquid?

MrssC92 · 11/01/2020 14:55

I also can't swallow tablets. The folic acid and vitamin d tablet from boots is tiny. At first try it in a spoon full of yoghurt. I couldnt notice it and it became less scary. I can now take it with just some cordial or fruit juice.

This really doesn't seem like an insurmountable problem.

Crush up one of the tiny (like Boots own) folic acid tablets into a spoonful of jam/yoghurt/something else you like. Why wouldn't that work?

I had some folate tablets that were capsules containing powder. You might be able to mix the powder with water or in some yoghurt or something if you can find similar.

Eggs too, baked potatoes and beans, dark green vegetables (brocolli, asparagus etc).

Marmite is the best dietary source, as far as I can tell. 120 µg per 8g serving.
......
I ate all of those throughout pregnancy as well as meat, poultry, sprouts, carrots and a variety of fruit. I ate things I'd never eaten before, not even fancied! The only things I went off were cheese and chocolate though cheese sauce, eg on brocolli and cauliflower, or mac cheese, I enjoyed. Drank plenty of milk.

Folic acid supplements were introduced for pregnant women in 1998 because it cannot be guaranteed that they will eat well or even feel like it.

I couldn’t swallow the pregnacare vitamins either and had to take the liquid. What worked for me was taking it in the evening. I threw up after taking it in the morning. If you can’t take the taste or smell/taste maybe try blitzing it into a smoothie or something.

BuddingBaker · 11/01/2020 17:18

I couldn't take folic acid because it made me really sick so I just ate loads of spinach to make up for it - it helped that I craved it a lot during my pregnancy. It's not that exciting but a good way of getting the folic acid you need if you're struggling

NameChange30 · 11/01/2020 17:23

Buy tablets with folic acid by itself or just with vitamin D (even with added vitamin D the tablets are still tiny). They don't taste of anything. If you still can't swallow them you could crush them up and mix them with anything, water or yoghurt or whatever you can stomach.

I don't know if it's possible to get liquid folic acid but could be worth asking a pharmacist or your GP?

I would avoid all pregnancy and conception vitamins, they have too much other stuff in them.

PurpleBee39 · 11/01/2020 17:26

I have seen some vitamins in a spray form recently, I don't know if they do one which includes folic acid but it's worth having a look online.

justtheonethen · 11/01/2020 17:30

These can be opened up and mixed with food/drink.

folic acid

PurpleBee39 · 11/01/2020 17:32

I have just found a multi vitamin spray which contains the right amount of folic acid. Maybe check with a pharmacist to make sure the other vitamins are all okay for pregnancy.

people had plenty of babies before FA came in tablet form. focus on your diet and try not to worry if even liquid is that bad.
