Drinking whilst pregnant

Not after a flaming, just generally interested, what are people's views on drinking whilst pregnant?

I received a promotion at work today, and my colleague said you can have a glass of bubbles to celebrate, I patted my bump and laughed it off. She said plenty do, Is this the case?

No judgement either way.

I didn't drink anything until after 20 weeks. Then I just had 1-2 glasses of wine or Prosecco per week, max. Probably not every week. I don't drink spirits at all when pregnant.
I know plenty of people who don't drink anything at all.

econowifey · 09/12/2019 17:06

No I didn't, and still don't really. Just not worth it in my opinion. Congrats on the promotion! Smile

InDubiousBattle · 09/12/2019 17:07

I drank before I knew I was pregnant with my first but not at all once I knew with either of my dc. I just wasn't that bothered tbh, certainly with dd I think I would have been sick had I drunk (I was with every bloody thing!). Had I felt like a glass of fizz I would have had one though, I don't believe there's any risk at all with one smallish glass of wine.

Stoople · 09/12/2019 17:08

It's only 9 months, I didn't. I doubt one glass would do much harm, but unless you really, really want it, why bother? There's loads of nice mocktails and non alcoholic spritzes about now anyway.

dutchmaster · 09/12/2019 17:11

i didnt fancy it but did review many studies which showed a couple of glasses of prosecco (or wine) drank slowly wouldn't make it through to the baby in any amount that could cause an issue. people just generally cant be trusted to stop at a couple hence the guidelines.

NemophilistRebel · 09/12/2019 17:17

The odd glass of bubbles or half an ale occasionally throughout if I fancied it

manicmumdayss · 09/12/2019 17:47

Thanks everyone, tonight I feel like pulling the duvet over my head and sleeping, but my toddler has other ideas!

I may have a glass over Xmas though Smile

Never drank in any of my pregnancies or while breastfeeding. I have time in my opinion to do it later. Not a great drinker anyways.

If I was really craving( during pregnancy) beer, I would buy 0.00 alcohol.

Autumntoowet · 09/12/2019 18:04

I am having a glass of red as I type.
I haven’t really drink anything until last week but a small glass of red now that I overdue and massively fed up? Fine by me.
As for breastfeeding, there is so much research showing how little alcohol passes on to the breast milk that I am absolutely ok with it.

Gruzinkerbell1 · 09/12/2019 18:07

I didn’t drink in either of my pregnancies. It’s only 9 months and I’m not a big drinker anyway.

LH1987 · 09/12/2019 18:13

I read Expecting Better, which was really good. The author analysed a huge variety of studies and could find no concrete evidence that after the first trimester 1 alcoholic drink daily did any harm. (By one drink I think it was 125ml of wine or a bottle of beer). Well worth a read.l

User1223422 · 09/12/2019 18:15

My problem is I never want just one class so I have and will continue to abstain. I miss it so much though and I’m not even a massive drinker! 😩 must be a case of wanting what I can’t have!

MarshmallowsOnToast · 09/12/2019 18:23

I haven't but I will be having a glass of Asti with my Christmas dinner ☺️

slowrunningteacher · 09/12/2019 18:29

I'm planning to not drink.
I'm hoping to find some good fake prosecco or similar for Christmas Day. I have had appetizer in a wine glass on occasion to pretend 😂.
Mocktails so far have been pretty good.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 09/12/2019 18:30

Had nothing up to about 14 weeks and then had the occasional very small glass of wine - like one every other week.

coffeeforone · 09/12/2019 18:33

I don't believe the odd glass does any harm. I occasionally had the odd glass both pregnancies. I don't believe there is any risk having in the occasional small drink if you fancy it.

NemophilistRebel · 09/12/2019 18:37

Some say it could even benefit

Lower stress , antioxidants (red wine)

Just don’t go chugging tequila slammers Grin

DragonMamma · 09/12/2019 18:42

I had the odd glass after my 20 week scan. I craved cider with my first and wine with my second.

My midwife didn’t bat an eyelid and both are fine 🤷🏼‍♀️

PopcornAndWine · 09/12/2019 19:07

I had one glass of wine at Christmas, one on my birthday and one on my wedding anniversary.

As PP said, read Expecting Better by Emily Oster. Very reassuring if you want an occasional glass.

Sandsnake · 09/12/2019 19:14

I’m 31 weeks and have been enjoying a glass of wine or so a week since around 20ish weeks. I did the same with my first pregnancy without issue. It’s a Saturday night treat and I’m happy with it, having consulted the evidence (as pp have said, the Emily Oster book is great).

manicmumdayss · 09/12/2019 19:49

Have ordered the Emily Oster book, thanks to all who recommended.

So, funny you should ask that but my job requires me to work with doctors (I am not a doctor). And literally the other week I was working with two very senior Obs and Gyne consultants and, as I am pregnant, I asked them a couple of questions. There responses were as follows:
Can I drink when pregnant? YES! Its “an old wives tail that you can’t! Obviously don’t go out getting hammered every week but do not deny yourself the odd glass of wine or champagne on a special occasion”

I haven’t had a drink yet but intend to have an amaretto coffee on Christmas morning and my mother’s VERY porty trifle!

Long story short - do whatever you feel comfortable with but a glass here or there is absolutely fine! From the horses mouth

Xx

Rubyroost · 09/12/2019 23:41

I've had three small glasses of wine all after 20 weeks, I'm 25 weeks now.

CloudyVanilla · 10/12/2019 02:53

I haven't drunk with any of my pregnancies (am 35 weeks with my third). I'm risk adverse in pregnancy and dont really drink anyway so it would be odd for me to start now

Cant see much evidence to prove that the odd drink does any harm. Would consider having a glass of wine this time when labour kicks off, to help me relax! :)

Honeybee85 · 10/12/2019 02:58

I haven’t even drank a glass of champagne to celebrate my wedding when I was pregnant.
I don’t judge anyone who drinks the occasional glass of wine during pregnancy but I just didn’t feel comfortable about it. FAS is a very real thing and you can’t predict after how many glasses of alcohol it might occur. The only way to avoid it is to stay clear of alcohol during pregnancy completely.
