Black Friday or January sales for baby stuff?

We are due our first baby in early March and have decided to buy the travel system new. Does anyone have any advice about whether baby stuff has better deals on Black Friday not in the January sales?

The travel system we'd like is 10% off in Black Friday sales at John Lewis at the moment but we have to balance that against buying it so early that 3 months of the guarantee is gone before baby is even due to arrive. It is also due a new model release in 2020 I think in February, so not sure if the current model would be much cheaper just before/as that is launched?

Advice and previous experience needed!

I’ve been keeping an eye on JL prices. Stuff was on sale two weeks ago, they put it back up to full for last two weeks, then back to same sale price as two weeks ago for Black Friday.

So not much of a saving, but fine if you know what you want. Not sure what Boxing Day prices will be like so it depends if you want to wait and gamble!

I'm told the John Lewis January sale is good for baby things, but that is anecdotal... I'm due Feb and was disappointed to see only 10% off this black Friday. I wonder if they might do extra discounts nearer black Friday itself, the 29th.

Have you tried going to one of the various 'new baby events' offered by mamas and papas, mothercare (?), probably a few others too. They can give good discounts for attending, we got our travel system for about half the price!

When I was pregnant with my first back in 2016, the Black Friday sales were actually pretty decent. I got 25% off a travel system & a free maxi-cosi car seat. Got an Oyster travel system & the car seat for £450!

But looking around this year (& similarly last year), the sales are awful. Half the shops had better deals last week in the none sale!

Boxing Day sales seem better overall I always think but it does involve getting out of your PJ’s on Boxing Day 😂

Have you checked Pram World, Natural Baby Shower and other one shop online independents? John Lewis will price match their deals (even with the registration discounts - you usually get an additional 5-10% on for registering with them). Suggest you take a look at the prices and then email JL Customer service online for them to price match - can do it after purchase too. So you should be able to get a lot more than 10% off on certain brands. I got my Uppababy Vista for 785 doing it this way.

Bounty are also currently offering 25% off all Angelcare products - so you should be able to pick up a good baby monitor for a very good price.

The best sales are the Christmas and Summer ones for UK baby stuff in my experience.

We got our travel system recently from the Trendybaby website. A cosatto one with car seat and isofix base for £400. Your one may be on there

I got a joolz day3 with maxi cosy car seat and a baby nest thing from natural baby shower for just under £600 in their Black Friday deal. Was looking elsewhere for the same travel system and it was almost double the price in JL. Worth taking a look at natural baby shower imo xx
Oh and fab service (I'm local to their store) and very quick delivery too xx

Just been doing some looking round the the base for our car seat (Cybex Car Seat Base Z) is currently cheaper at John Lewis than any where else (including all the places mentioned above) so probably worth having a look at. We got the car seat (cybex cloud z) in the Mothercare sale last week and John Lewis now have it at the same price (kind of wish I'd waited and got both from JL but doesn't make any difference in reality)

Lunafortheloveogod · 23/11/2019 20:02

Definitely look about JL was £300 more for our double, it was on offer online.. online4baby if I remember right.
It’s a hit or miss on what sales better there’s never a guarantee of it even being reduced next time. I’m due the same time with dc2 but we took the risk on the guarantee (built it and tested it all so it’s fine off the bat) with the deal we got would’ve been mad to wait to see if it went any cheaper since it ticks all the boxes.

Just a bit of previous experience, obviously for equipment is doesn’t matter, but I went crazy in the sales while I was pregnant for clothes.
When my baby arrived he was big & basically a clothes size above his age for the first year. Meaning everything I bought him fit him in the wrong season!!
I.e winter coats too small in the depths of winter.
Yes they were cheaper but I had to buy again anyway!

Thanks @strawberrye for asking this question, as I had the same exact one! And hope you are doing well, btw :).

I think the 10% discount on JL things is pretty negligible, since most of it is cheaper online anyway. I'm hoping there are better sales towards the end of next week!

Have a look on amazon, we got our car seat & base (maxi cosi) during the prime sale in the summer, I can’t remember the exact price we paid but it was a good chunk cheaper than anything we saw in stores likewise our Chico next to me. we also got our icandy buggy (the orange) from Bournemouth baby an online store for 550, only difference is we have last seasons colour on the hood - might be an issue for some, really isn’t for us!
