Don't hold back - would love to know what connotations, both good and bad the name gives people.

Thanks!

A bit posh, nice name though and it's the name of the crab in Little Mermaid (dd watching it at the moment)

McEdam · 19/08/2007 12:00

I think once you know someone with a particular name, it loses whatever preconceptions you had. Unless it's extraordinarily stupid, of course, like Princess Tiamii whatever it was. And Sebastian's not even approaching the same (lack of) class.

It does remind me of going into Foyles, that bizarre bookshop on Charing Cross Road, and asking one of the assistants (they were all obviously ex-public schoolboys) a question he couldn't answer. He called out 'Sebastian!' and three other assistants looked round.

Theclosetpagan · 19/08/2007 12:03

I love it - one of the names I considered for DS. In the end we went for a very well known name after his great grandfather but Sebastian was right up there with the main contenders.

leakyR · 19/08/2007 12:03

Never met an Englishman called Sebastian, but I'm from the North East and now live in Yorkshire. Imagine it said with a geordie/Yorkshire accent Doesn't really work.

That said it is a good strong name and Seb is pretty cool too.

During 2 years in France in the late 90s I met lots of Sebastians. All nice guys, so no nasty connotations.

harleyd · 19/08/2007 12:05

honestly, i hate it. sounds like a jumped up little git. soz

belgo · 19/08/2007 12:07

I like it. But I do not like 'Bassy' as a shortened version (I've heard of this and thought it sounded awful).

Cammelia · 19/08/2007 12:13

I love it, it would have been a contender if I'd had a son.

emkana · 19/08/2007 12:24

LOVE it. Check out my profile!

Gobbledigook · 19/08/2007 12:26

I don't like it personally but it doesn't evoke strong feelings iykwim.

Pinkchampagne · 19/08/2007 12:31

I love it too! I know a very cute little boy called Sebastian

ProjectIcarus · 19/08/2007 12:31

I like it.

DD1 calls Sebastian from the Little Mermaid Bastie though.

suzycreamcheese · 19/08/2007 12:33

sebastian is beautiful name but seb i reallly really dont like

its all brideshead connotations for me

Marina · 19/08/2007 12:35

I like it too
Was on the long list for ds but does not go especially well with our family name

emkana · 19/08/2007 12:39

It's funny because in Germany it's a really commonplace name, no posh connotations at all.

itwasntme · 19/08/2007 12:42

I love it. That is on my list of names (am having a boy in Dec)

Unfortunately, dh thinks its a "gay" name

phdlife · 19/08/2007 12:43

If my bf hadn't named her ds1 Sebastian I would've liked it. He's the most beautiful 13yo now, devastatingly clever, good at sport and in 3 different choirs!

To me it will always be associated with this lovely lad.

pointydog · 19/08/2007 12:45

like suzycee, brideshead in every sense.

Depends whre you live, I'm sure

tortoiseSHELL · 19/08/2007 12:50

I think it's lovely.

missbumpy · 19/08/2007 14:34

I love this name. I want it to be on the shortlist for my bump's name but my dp vetoed it. I think he thinks it's a bit posh/poncey. What would he know though ?

alycat · 19/08/2007 15:01

My DS is Sebastian, he is cute, handsome and happy with a floppy blond fringe and yes, we are a fairly well spoken lot!

It is a great name.

chocolatemummy · 19/08/2007 15:09

I love it and was going to call my baby that if a boy but it wasnt, the only think that put me off was when my nephew was practising it bless him at 3 years old e kept saying Baston and my older niece started saying bastard!

berolina · 19/08/2007 15:10

Love it. Was under consideration for ds1 but vetoed by dh because he doesn't like one of the German shortenings (Basti).

PellMell · 19/08/2007 15:18
