Hello Mums

I am 29 weeks pregnant with our second baby, a little boy. We are french but we need to find a name that fits in english speaking countries. We thought about Dorian...

My sister says it's a bit negative for a boy, as Oscar Wilde's character is not really great.

What do you think ? in general and about this comment in particular ?

thanks !!!!

mamanflo

There is a guy called Dorian West who recently played rugby for England, good player too. So with him in mind I do not think it is a poncy name.

Dorian is quite a popular name over here in west wales. It is pronounced with a rolling R. I immediately think of a farming type strapping gentle giant when I think of the name.. Never met a bad Dorian yet.

Makes me think of "Back to the future" the car was a De Lorean (sp?) which sounds like Dorian. What about Thierry? (aka Terry Henry!)

pmsl @ boco

'going for gold' was the ultimate displacement activity t.v.

i seem to remember it was vital viewing when i was studying for my a-levels and surprisingly after my exams were over i just couldn't be arsed with it.

HollyGoHeavily · 16/08/2007 09:59

Oh my word - i am crying with laughter about Didier Partouche.....

Thanks Boco - that has cheered me up no end...

FLIER · 16/08/2007 10:01

sorry, but i hate it-too effeminate (sp?)

MamanFlo · 16/08/2007 18:41

Thank you soooo much : this thread is very interesting and funny as well (the Partouche thing I did'nt get it but apparently it's hilarious

Thanks a lot as well for your ideas, and especially french names of guys you lusted about in your teen years Didier and Bruno are very seventies in france... Didier especially, as a famous dog is named like this in a very funny movie

I talked to DH about your comments on Dorian and he is not bothered at all by the Birds of feathers, or even that it might be effeminate I was not that convinced at first, but then on the tube going back from work it just struck me : that's his name, that's the one my guts like if you prefer...

Not quite definitive yet, but it is a serious contender

thanks again : it helps a lot

Good for you MamanFlo, it's nice when you just 'know' like that!

Tranquila · 17/08/2007 10:07

great!
i for one, am v impressed with your choice.

congrats!

becklespeckle · 17/08/2007 10:20

I like Dorian, it is unusual these days here but is not too modern (I like older names). If you like it then go for it!

mixedmama · 17/08/2007 12:00

I had a French friend who called her son

Mattis

Absolutely love it and works very well in both languages without being odd in either.

Gemy · 17/08/2007 13:07

Sorry don't like it. Makes me think of this disgusting fruit that we saw (and smelt!) lots of in Singapore. Don't think it's spelt the same, but is pronounced the same.

Rapheal is lovely though, as is Luc.

Panyanpickle77 · 17/08/2007 13:11

makes me think of Dorian Yates

NAB3 · 17/08/2007 13:12

Not for me but he is your child so good luck with choosing.

AngharadGoldenhand · 17/08/2007 13:20

Immediatly made me think of Oscar Wilde's book. Negative in that sense.

Also, old-fashioned and not a popular name.

Oh well done BBBee, what a find. He's quite funny isn't he, that Didier - good joke he cracked there.

Boco · 17/08/2007 16:20

You have to listen to the whole song, and you can sing along, it's uplifting. I've been humming it all day. I sang it to my gran but she had no recollection, even though i know she used to love it. Maybe it was my singing.

full going for gold glory

BBBee · 17/08/2007 17:41

the line 'only the best survive' is quite sinister isn't it.

BBBee · 17/08/2007 17:43

do oyu think Henry Kelly has some kind of blood bath backstage at the end for those who didnt make gold?

Boco · 17/08/2007 17:50

Yes i'm almost certain

Oh Mr Kelly. Why? The human loss from that programme was astounding.

3Ddonut · 17/08/2007 21:26

I'm LOVING that toon!!!! That theme song was never so long!!! Memories...am defo using that Didier Partouche line!!!!!

Wilkie · 17/08/2007 21:27

3Ddonut · 17/08/2007 21:29
