Hello Mums

I am 29 weeks pregnant with our second baby, a little boy. We are french but we need to find a name that fits in english speaking countries. We thought about Dorian...

My sister says it's a bit negative for a boy, as Oscar Wilde's character is not really great.

What do you think ? in general and about this comment in particular ?

thanks !!!!

Sorry, no, Hectors House is flashing through my mind. (Mad dog puppet from the 70s)

misspiggy · 15/08/2007 21:26

Raphael is lovely.

PMSL at Melvil and brother Advil.

Boco · 15/08/2007 21:28

I like Raphael - a little boy in my village is called Raphael, and Raffy for short.

I think Etienne is lovely too.

Not Melvil - it's just a bit wrong. And Dorian is ok, but i don't really like it.

i think if dorian or melvil go to school in england they will have a really rough time.

raphael will be really cool if ninja turtles are still in.

etienne sounds french, i dont think anyone could have a problem with that, i think its a lovely name.

hector i am undecided on, but i think i like it

sorry, that all sounds really negative now i read it back but i have 7 and 8 yo boys, i know their reaction to wierd names and i really do try to train them to be pleasant!

wheresthehamster · 15/08/2007 21:33

Nooooo, not Gabriel! That's up there with Dorian.
Now, Raphael I like. What about Simeon?

MrsScavo · 15/08/2007 21:34

I'd never heard the name Melvil before, and I'm sure it sounds better in French, but it just sounds um, well... wrong.

DoubleBluff · 15/08/2007 21:35

Dorian sounds very feminine for a boy. I have to say i like Simon best on your list, but here it is a little dated. Most Simons I know are my age group.

MrsScavo · 15/08/2007 21:37

I've known 2 boys called Raphael, one French, one English, and both very cheeky!

gringottsgoblin · 15/08/2007 21:37

gabriel will be a disater when they do the xmas story for the first time at school

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 15/08/2007 21:43

Dorian Williams used to organise the show-jumping at Hickstead etc. I hunted with him a couple of times too (eons ago), he was first-rate! So I've always associated it as a male name.

Like Raphael too. And Yves.

Slacker · 15/08/2007 21:56

I wanted to call DS1 Dorian but DH said no. So he's Gabriel instead.

I like Raphael too

largeginandtonic · 15/08/2007 22:01

Love Dorian, it was on the list for our latest DS#5, he was Beau in the end. Still love it though, very nice in French and English too

MrsJohnCusack · 15/08/2007 22:09

yes i immediatly think of Dorian Williams too NorksBride!

MrsSpoon · 15/08/2007 22:10

Birds of a Feather here too I'm afraid.

aloha · 15/08/2007 22:11

I know one. We call him Doreen
But if we liked him better, we wouldn't

helenelisabeth · 15/08/2007 22:15

Not fussed on Dorian, LOVE Raphael! If I was french that is the name I would choose, it is soooo romantic plus Rafa is cool as well. Gabriel is a name I have toyed with during this pg but never had the bottle to use.

Niecie · 15/08/2007 22:16

I knew a chap called Dorian - he was a nice enough person so I have no problem with it.

I thought the female version of the name was Dorien?

hatwoman · 15/08/2007 22:18

most people I know who want a name that fits in several languages go for Alex.

what about Eric? love that name. especially in French. or Nicola (?sp) I know it's a girl's name in English but there's smoething about it. I know you're thinking about an unborn child so not sure if it's appropriate but I think it's a really sexy name

WendyWeber · 15/08/2007 22:18

I suppose Didier wouldn't work in the UK? I have always loved that name - the first Frenchman I ever lusted after - he was 17, I was 16 lol

I like gabriel. also what about Theo? that works in French doesn;t it? Isadore too. Stephan

MyTwopenceworth · 15/08/2007 22:19

Oh I read that as Didler!!

I was about to post that I would pay you not to name a child Didler!!

No-one else knows what diddler means, do they?

Boco · 15/08/2007 22:23

Lol - do you remember Going For Gold! with Henry Kelly?

All those European quiz contestants called Heinrich and Lars - Henry Kelly once shrieked in his helium voice
'Didier Partouche, you're playing catch-up!'

  • and that's what dp shrieks in a very convincing accent when he wants to get on my nerves. Didier Partouche has become code for 'you're slightly grumpy, i'm going to make you want to hurt me' in the boco household.
hatwoman · 15/08/2007 22:24

Erwin? Edward?
