Sweep today! How long did it take before labour?

39+5 today and had a sweep this morning. I was surprised to hear her say I'm 2cm dilated, and baby boys head is so low she could touch it. She said she could pop my waters he's that low (which I presume is good?) She said she gave me a really good sweep. My cervix is still a little firm but she said that will efface out. I've been having on and off pain, and tightenings since this morning, could this be the start?

Anyone else had a sweep and it resulted in labour? How long did it take?

Sweep at 10am, first contraction 8pm, baby at 8.30pm. Good luck!

Justincase87 · 27/09/2019 17:24

I had a sweep at 14:30 and gave birth at 20:15! I was 2cm dilated and was 8cm when I got to the hospital - if the tightenings become more regular ring the hospital and be firm, they told me because it was my first baby nothing would happen straight away, and if it wasn't for my DH realising I was in full blow labour I would have given birth at home!

PreschoolYes · 27/09/2019 17:27

confusedandemployed · 27/09/2019 17:28

3 sweeps and 2 weeks later for me too!!

kateybeth79 · 27/09/2019 17:39

2 sweeps and a week later

mistermagpie · 27/09/2019 17:39

Sweep at about 6pm, he was born about six hours later!

Celebelly · 27/09/2019 17:41

I went into labour just over 48 hours after my first sweep.

Sleepyhead19 · 27/09/2019 17:45

7 sweeps (the most my midwife had ever heard of being done) because they wanted me to have baby a bit early. Didn’t work 😂. He arrived 5 days late and 8 days after the last sweep. I even had slow labour for 2 weeks and it didn’t even speed it up.

Sleepyhead19 · 27/09/2019 17:45

Best of luck though! I hope you have a little one by morning!

katmarie · 27/09/2019 17:51

Exciting! I had a sweep at 40 weeks exactly and another at 40 + 5, my ds finally arrived at 40+8. I hope your little one arrives a bit quicker than that, good luck!

Beach11 · 27/09/2019 17:54

Lots count the number I had with both my pregnancies and still ended up getting induced for both.

Howdidido · 27/09/2019 19:27

24hrs later

Crimsonpetalandthewhite · 27/09/2019 20:30

Thank you for all the replies ladies! I really hope this is it! Pains are still on and off and feeling very uncomfortable so hopefully it's not long.

Two sweeps and another week for me...

confuddeledconfuddel · 27/09/2019 20:52

Sweep at 3pm, labour at 1am, born at 6.30am best of luck!

missrose0110 · 27/09/2019 22:36

I've not had a sweep before so can't answer your question. However I'm a ftm and I have a stretch and sweep on Monday that I'm so nervous for. Can I ask, Does it hurt? How long does it take? Thanks in advance

Newmumatlast · 28/09/2019 05:43

@missrose0110 I'm a ftm too and have my first sweep Monday. The doctor told me if it doesn't hurt its not been done right which was a bit disconcerting. I'm expecting uncomfortable pain like when I had a catheter put in for ivf

Coconutbug · 28/09/2019 06:34

@missrose0110
Think it depends on your body, with my first child the first time they did a sweep it did hurt but the second time they did it wasn't as bad. With this pregnancy can barely feel what she's doing lol. It's like an uncomfortable feeling, like an overstretching of your vagina if you've ever experienced having something too large put in when you aren't ready lol
It doesn't take long maybe a minute or 2. If you are dilated and they can do it that is. My cervix wasn't dilated at all so they couldn't do anything a few days ago :(

Crimsonpetalandthewhite · 28/09/2019 12:15

@missrose0110 Honestly I was expecting it to be a lot worse than it was. Didn't hurt at all. Just felt a little uncomfortable. Lasted maybe a minute, or two.

I had one at 40+6. Same as you, she said she could touch the babies head, and I was 80% effaced. She suggested I went for a long walk afterwards, which I did.

Went into labour the next day and the baby was born that evening.

Hard to tell how much impact the sweep had, though, as I was overdue anyway!

Hope you're not waiting too much longer Smile

galvantula · 28/09/2019 12:23

A week

Labmum · 28/09/2019 19:13

I had a sweep at 37+3, labour started and baby arrived at 37+6. I was a couple of cm dilated when they did the sweep. My plug came away over the next couple of days so I guessed things would be happening soon.

mineofuselessinformation · 28/09/2019 19:21

I think they can help you get into labour, but only if your body is nearly ready anyway!
