Craving a smell?!

I'm 37w and haven't had any food cravings but in the last week I've had an overwhelming, weirdly strong craving for the smell of a particular facial cleansing product. It's quite an astringent smell (the product has alcohol, menthol and eucalyptus in it) and I cannot stop sniffing it!

I know this probably sounds mad. I don't want to drink the stuff (thank God!) but I could just sit there smelling it for ages.

Has anyone else craved a smell rather than a food? Please tell me I'm not the only one - I feel like a lunatic! Confused

Not food or a smell, but I craved (and that really is the right word, it was a physical sensation) episodes of QI.
Predated Dave and the iPlayer too, so had to watch blurry YouTube videos.

I had no food cravings but I couldn’t stop smelling vicks. I was addicted to it. I even had a pot in my handbag and when I thought no one was looking I’d be sniffing!!

Yes! I did .... craved the smell of freshly cut wood, petrol and gloss paint

Spent a lot of time in petrol stations / B&Q where they cut wood and tried to not sniff gloss paint but I did because the need was too much not my best moment in timeGrin

God yes, for proper old school soap. It had to be the pink coloured Pearl brand and I used to sniff it constantly when I was at the end of my pregnancy with DS1.

KnickerBockerAndrew · 24/09/2019 22:05

Yes, I absolutely craved the smell of cowshit! Luckily I live in the countryside, I'd drop DS1 off at school every day to a field I knew was particularly pungent. I was praised by many for walking so much during the pregnancy... Little did they know I was pursuing cowpats as if they were crack...

Yadid · 24/09/2019 22:06

Firelighters even lol

Claphands · 24/09/2019 22:07

I craved the smell of Olbas oil, I needed that to go to sleep .

EmmiJay · 24/09/2019 22:12

Yes! I craved the smell of petrol too!

Shouldershrugger · 24/09/2019 22:25

I craved the smell of moth balls with my eldest. I used to leave pouches of mothballs on the radiator. On my way home, the heating would come on and upon my entry I'd be welcomed by the smell. I couldn't get enough of it. It was like walking into heaven...

Thanks, ladies! I'm SO glad it's not just me! Grin

My craving was the inside of old library books and libraries in general

Used to run in to get a good sniff as much as I could

sodrained · 24/09/2019 22:32

It's usually linked to being low in Iron. I craved the smell of Harpic black toilet cleaner with my son. I even had two bottles in my bag on the labour ward and done the toilet there until my partner took it away Shock as it was getting a bit over the top. By the time my son was born I was Anaemic

I'm 29 weeks and crave the smell of bleach! My OH loves it as I'm not usually the clean freak one but I will quite happily clean my bathroom and kitchen with flash (added bleach) all day. Also love swimming coz of the chlorine smell, and then smelling it on me after too... haven't had any food cravings though!!

December2019 · 25/09/2019 07:21

Mine at the moment is yellow lenor fabric softener, only when it's been through the wash and is wet it doesn't smell the same if it's still in the bottle, I have the urge to suck the water out of the wet clothes too... very bizarre 😂

polkadotpixie · 25/09/2019 07:54

Yes, I craved the smell of tyres and Vanish stain removal powder. I could have happily licked either (but didn't!)

DieCryHate · 25/09/2019 07:56

I craved the smell (not taste despite loving chocolate normally!) of when you open a new tin of quality streets at Christmas. It was a real nostalgic thing and not just the smell but the look of all the shiny wrappers. I wanted to inhale it and run my fingers through the chocolates. Sadly i didn't get to fulfil my craving but it lasted a couple of weeks and on my mind constantly.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 25/09/2019 07:57

Yes, bath sponges (it’s more common than you’d think) they had to be the right ‘type’ though. 2 years since my last pregnancy & the smell can still calm me down.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/09/2019 07:59

Milton sterilising fluid, or if that wasn't available, just regular bleach.

Gigis · 25/09/2019 08:07

Ohh yes!! I craved kind of musty old plastered walls smell. Under the stairs, and weirdly the music corridor at my school!!
I used to get in about 5 minutes early each morning just to stand in the hallway for a good few minutes and inhale really deeply over and over again before anyone else got there.

Realised after about a week that there was CCTV at the end of the hall, that I'd been standing directly in front of! The site team must have thought I was possessed.

hittheroadjack1 · 25/09/2019 09:15

I had this. It's a form of pica

PrincessHoneysuckle · 25/09/2019 10:32

Fairy original washing up liquid

Jesskir89 · 25/09/2019 10:35

I can't sleep without lavender on my pillow if that counts :)

Stravapalava · 25/09/2019 10:39

Yes! I polished my tables every day because I couldn't get enough of the smell of a certain furniture polish. I even considered spraying it on my clothes when I went to work so I could sniff at my leisure!

Demilxo · 02/10/2023 04:59
