Sex to induce labour success stories?!

FirsttimerNI · 24/09/2019 13:07

Hi all just wondering if the old wives tale of sex to induce labour has actually ever worked for anyone?! I am aware of the biology bit, the prostaglandin and the oxytocin etc but just wondering if anyone has any real life success stories to convince me further. I’m currently in 39+3 and pretty fed up, but also feel like a small orca whale and sex with my long suffering DH isn’t all that appealing at present lol just because I feel so big and awkward! Wondering if anyone can convince me it will be worth it to get things going!

I suspect this rumour was started by a man Grin

I wish I knew... I went to 42 weeks but couldn't bring myself to have sex from a lot before that!

Rolandrat12 · 24/09/2019 13:11

It worked both times for me! My midwife tipped me off with a wink and she was right.

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 24/09/2019 13:12

I read that it's more effective if taken orally?!
However, I went into labour 2 hours after sex but I was 41weeks so could've happened anyway.

Roozy123 · 24/09/2019 13:13

Worked for me.
I tried everything and nothing worked.

I had sex late Tuesday night and went into labour Wednesday morning.

May have been a coincidence but I'll be doing it this time too (14 weeks Preg right now so awhile to go lol)

Good luck! X

Happened twice for me!
DTD Sunday am, DS born that lunch time.
DTD Sunday night, DD2 born early hours of Monday morning.

They were probably going to be born soon anyway so who knows? Grin

ameliathomas84 · 24/09/2019 13:27

Personally I don't believe it! I think you'd have lots of ladies going into premature labour of it was tht powerful 😂😂

MontyDyson · 24/09/2019 13:27

No did not work for me, Raspberry leaf tea did thou and it was actually very nice!

slingthegin · 24/09/2019 13:33

Semen contains high concentrations of prostaglandins. There is a Cochrane review on SI for cervical ripening and inducing labour but there is a lack of good evidence on this issue. IMO it's worth a try but only if you feel up to it OP as personally feel it's the associated oxytocin release which is the key issue.

Figuringitout · 24/09/2019 13:48

Apparently the prostaglandins in semen do work to help ‘ripen’ the cervix and help it stretch and thin for labour and birth.
Digesting them is more effective than sex though (according to research!)

Ahh no way!!!!! My partner can never know of this!!!! 😳😂😂😂

Babycakes1989 · 24/09/2019 14:22

I am currently 40+2 and we DTD yesterday afternoon. So far nothing 😩😂...... if he thinks it’s game on tonight too he can think again!! Haha xxx

Magpiefeather · 24/09/2019 14:26

Hard to know which thing worked but all these things preceded my labour (I was desperate to go into spontaneous labour!!)

  • cervical sweep
  • long walk doing laps round the park
  • sex
  • scrubbing the floors

Did all this on the Saturday and went into labour early hours Sunday morning

Good luck!

yearinyearout · 24/09/2019 14:29

Worked for me. I read that you needed to do it a couple of times...we did it one night and the next morning, my waters broke later that day. I guess they may have broken anyway but who can say?

Windydaysuponus · 24/09/2019 14:31

Dtd 9 pm. Waters broke midnight. Ds arrived 255 am
Ime vacuuming works better.
More than a few labours started this way!

SimpleAndPlanned · 24/09/2019 14:34

Worked in just over an hour for me.

Had worked for several friends too.

MerryDeath · 24/09/2019 15:34

It worked for me, but I think it only works if your body is ready to go into labour anyway - it just speeds the process up a bit (what the midwife told me, otherwise as others have said you would end up with a lot of ladies in premature labour!). If your body isn't ready for labour then I doubt sex will help much!

BaaBaaBS · 24/09/2019 16:07

Orally? 🤔😅but doesn't that just go into your stomach then?

Banwell32 · 24/09/2019 16:09

It worked for me contractions came on straight away but was in early labour for three days after this

Leftielefterson · 24/09/2019 16:55

I had a sweep the day before I gave birth but also had sex so I’m not sure. We were fairly ‘active’ during the last few days before I gave birth so who knows?

If you’re feeling up to it though go for it.

DamonSalvatoresDinner · 24/09/2019 17:59

It seemed to work with all three kids. All labours started the morning after sex after a dry spell. Could be coincidental however. One was on my due date, one was 6 days over and the other was somewhere around his due date (I didn't know his exact due date)

AnneLovesGilbert · 24/09/2019 18:17

Worked for me. But I was 40+3 and we’d done it every day for over a week so she might just have been ready.

sarebear1983 · 24/09/2019 18:31

Can't say for certain because in the days previous, I'd tried long walks etc. But on the morning, sex along with a cracking orgasm seemed to set me off, my waters broke 4 hours later. I did happen to also batch cook a mega hot chilli hoping that it would set me off but I'd only had chance to taste test it so I'm holding the sex accountable!
