So who's breech at the moment and how many weeks are you?

I'm 33+1 and I don't reckon this LO will turn!

Will keep you updated

OK, haven't heard from mommalove...

I have 8 moxibustion sticks. If anyone wants them and can email me their address today I will post them

bex44 · 22/08/2007 11:20

Thanks all for the supportive replies. I have had some friends be rather judgmental regarding caesarian option. Its nice to know other people feel the same way! Its also nice that everyone seems to respect other people's opinions, regardless of what they personally feel and want in their own situation.
I remain breech, and am seeing consultant tomorrow, when I will hopefully get a date for action.. Good luck to all those being seen today, may the outcome be as you wish for!

Bad business - lost a little amnio overnight and the LO isn't moving vigorously this morning. So I'm going in within the next hour for swab, trace and scan. Really, really fed up with this - I was getting transverse kicking yesterday and got all excited she might be moving, then this happens overnight and the movements I was getting were kicks into the bladder area. GRRRRR.

tjandluca · 22/08/2007 11:59

I found this thread by accident and wanted to offer my experience! My ds was diagnosed as breech at 39 weeks (he's now almost one!). As it was so late, I was offered an ECV the next morning and if it failed (they gave me a 40% chance of success), a C-Section in the afternoon. I agonised over it as to a first-timer the C-Section did seem like an easy way to avoid the pain of labour! But I decided to have a go at the ECV, mainly because I wanted to try and let everything happen naturally. The ECV was painful (ask for gas and air) but brief, and it worked! It did cause me to start contracting for a while (this is quite common as the uterus has been disturbed) but they tailed off and the baby wasn't at all affected. I ended up going 10 days overdue then had a normal delivery with just gas and air and pethidine.

I'm very glad I had the ECV and was able to do everything naturally. I was walking around and having a bath within half an hour of delivering, and although I had stitches, they healed quickly. The recovery, if I'd have had a C-Section would have been much more painful and longer. Also, my son was only 6lb 7oz at 10 days overdue so he would've been quite small at 39 weeks.

I hope that helps!

I feel guilty that I've only just seen this thread! Ooh, I can tell you all about breech births! My baby was breech right up until the end (she's two weeks' old now). I really wanted a home birth from the beginning, so was reluctant to go down the c-section route as she was also my first.

I found out she was breech at around 34 weeks. I tried everything - moxi, reflexology, yoga, positioning, frozen peas on the bump, swimming, positive thinking, the homeopathic remedy pulsatilla and finally ECVs. I'd say def try these if you can as they did stimulate movement, but not turning (frozen peas, moxi and reflexology being most effective for me!).

I had two attempts at ECV (I posted a thread a while back explaining the procedure in detail - will try to find it). Neither worked and I'd describe it as uncomfortable by and large but massively helped by gas and air.

I was then told that I wouldn't be able to have her at home as they don't have community midwives experienced in breech births in my area. I was informed that I'd have to labour in the consultant-led unit along if I wanted to try for a natural birth. This meant accepting their medical package of epidural, stirrups, continual monitoring and preventative episiotomy and forceps if necessary. The thing is, I'd read from independent midwives such as Mary Cronk that that is where the risk comes in - with medical interference with breech births. I was concerned and read up widely. I managed to find a very sympathetic consultant midwife at the hospital who agreed to support me and let me labour on the midwife-led unit on the condition that we'd 'bail out' if the birth didn't progress. This means a c-section and is recognised as the safest route if a breech birth doesn't progress.

In the event, I went into labour naturally, 5 days early. I had a good experience at the MLU and even got into the birthing pool. I laboured for 26 hours and progressed to 8cm dilation, but then it all slowed right down and I was advised to have a c-section. I was disappointed, but glad to have had the opportunity to labour on my terms and having contractions meant that my uterus contracted well after the op and my milk came in soon after. Nell was born weighing 6lb 1oz and she was breech even after birth as she came out sucking her toes! I'll try and find a pic and attach it to my profile.

The c-section was fine and I've recovered well. I don't regret waiting to go into labour naturally - some babies will turn in labour and I thought it was worth waiting.

So, long story, but hope it helps. Good luck to all you with breech babies!

diddle · 22/08/2007 13:22

toadstool - hope everything is ok. let us know how you get on.

Hopeitwontbebig · 22/08/2007 13:44

Annie75, thanks for your post. I was wondering how you'd got on. A couple of ladies from your antenatal thread had posted about you. I'm glad to hear you are recovering well from your caesarean, that's good to hear as I think I am going to be having one, seeing consultant next week to book at date, I'm 35+3 and baby is still breech and has been in the same position for as long as I can remember! Hope you're enjoying your newborn! Get those pics on your profile, want to have a look!!

Ceolas,
Has anybody emailed you for the moxa sticks yet? If not, can I have them please?

I'm not set up for CAT yet ... my email address is eirian dot thomas at gmail dot com

Thanks

MrsMar · 22/08/2007 13:56

Hi annie and tjandluca (do you have a ds called Luca? That's currently our fav for this one!! )

Thanks so much for your stories, always great to hear a broad range of experiences to help me make up my mind what to do.

HIWBB I'm not having a scan today, just a normal 36 week mw check. I keep thinking I'll get a definitive answer on the baby's position cos they're the experts and I'm rubbish at working it out. I've still got the hard bump slighly above and to the right of my tummy button which I reckon is a head, it bumps against my ribs now, kind of like a blunt bump iyswim... the movements I get lower are sharper jabs and wriggles, which is why I'm thinking they're feet. I could be totally wrong though, I'm rubbish at this! Only half an hour to go and I see the mw so hopefully she'll give me some answers. Will post back later x

Hopeitwontbebig · 22/08/2007 14:00

MrsMar, your baby sounds in the same position as mine! I've got a hard lump under my ribs on the right hand side and lots of wriggles and kicks low down. It was confirmed yesterday by both a midwife and doc that LO is still breech, all the movements are the same and my tummy shape is the same. MrsMar, out of interest, is your belly button sticking out? Mine isn't, but was well and truly an outy by this stage with my other 2 pregnancies.

EJT - have just emailed you

Annie75 · 22/08/2007 14:31

Have added a pic of how she came out! All made sense then. I had a very neat, tight bump throughout my pregnancy, so wondered if she was 'held in' tightly by me...

Good luck with your c-section. it's v straightforward - can answer any qs about that too! Two weeks on and i'm back to pretty much normal - able to walk and carry stuff.

Hopeitwontbebig · 22/08/2007 14:44

Great photo Annie, did it take a while for her to 'straighten out'? I know with newborns when their legs have been all scrunched and crossed in front of them they keep adopting the same position.

OP posts:
diddle · 22/08/2007 15:34

Love the pics Annia, your pets look very comfy on that sofa too.

Well i've seen the midwife this afternoon, and baby is still breech, i'm 34+5 today. Apparently They won't start to get concerned until after 37 weeks.

I found out today that I can't have an ECV because i had a section last time
Has anyone else been told this?

So my options are hope baby turns, have a section or try for a natural delivery.
Not sure i shoudl risk a natural as my last section was only 13 months ago and its a lot fo pressure on my scar. all advice welcome.
should i risk it? has anyone been in the same position as me?

dal21 · 22/08/2007 15:41

Annie - thanks for sharing your birthing experience. I have tried to just put this out of my mind til next week now. So much depends on the growth scan and how this bub is doing.

MrsM - fingers crossed for you.

Diddle - they dont tend to start worrying til later, that is exactly what my doc said. But cannot shed any light on your situation as I am preggers with my first. But I have read that after c section, they dont like to try and delivery vaginally for exactly the reason you have said.

Has anyones bub actually turned on this thread yet or not? I dont think they have.

lizziemun · 22/08/2007 15:49

I had mine turn last wedensday, although baby was nearly there by it self.

Consultant turn LO within minutes and has stayed turned.

toadstool · 22/08/2007 15:49

Checking in after trip to hospital, thank you for your messages - The good news is, they found no evidence of ruptured membranes, and LO is giving no cause for concern. Also, she's "trying to move", and she's now in a legs extended breech rather than curled up. They asked about booking me in for a CS but then decided to stick to the original care plan, so it's the consultant appointment end of next week and an ECV discussion in the light of that. But if I squirt again, it's straight in!
Annie, nice photo! Good to know you're well on the road to recovery after 2 weeks!

Hopeitwontbebig · 22/08/2007 15:49

I think the only baby that's turned so far is loler's. She posted on the Sept thread earlier and is still waiting for things to start.

MrsMar - Yes, my DS is called Luca. It's a great name - we've had lots of positive comments since he's been born.

dal21 · 22/08/2007 15:58

Lizzie - thats great news! And toadstool - heres hoping yours turns too!

dejags · 22/08/2007 16:04

My DD (born May this year) was breech until 35+4, she turned on the Friday and was born on the following Wednesday at 36+2.

I didn't think there was any hope of her turning. But she did. And it was a very odd feeling indeed.

I didn't do anything to assist her turning btw. I tried the upside down on the ironing board thing but I just couldn't get it right as I was so uncomfortable.

MrsMar · 22/08/2007 16:06

hello all, well the midwife seemed to think the baby is head down. I'm still not convinced, but hey, she's the expert. TBH her examination was rather cursory compared to the last one. She did say that even if he wasn't head down they wouldn't do anything until 37 weeks anyway, so they're leaving it until my 38 week appt. But, and this is what has the doubts in my head HIWBB... I like you have a pretty small bump (comparing myself to others around the same stage, not terribly scientific I know) belly button is not inside out at all... still inwards actually. Also kicks are still very low, but that could be cos he's folded in two... apparently the hard lump under my ribs is his bottom. But then I would have thought if his legs reach from my ribs down to my cervix then he must be completely folded in two (a bit like annie's baby, great photo by the way!) and surely if that was the case my bump would be bigger as effectively I'd have a doubled up baby in there? Oh I don't know, I'm rubbish at this!!! Not going to worry any more, I'm not going to worry any more... must keep telling myself that.

On a side note, I was slightly disappointed cos if he'd still been breech then I would have had a cs at 39 weeks which would have meant one less week at least of carrying this weight I'm a terrible mummy aren't I? Just want this baby to be born now!!!

MrsMar · 22/08/2007 16:07

Oh and tjandluca... it is one cool name ! We're both Italian hence going for an Italian name.

Annie75 · 22/08/2007 16:51

Hi Hopeitwontbebig. Yep, it took a few days for her legs to descend properly but now she's fine and able to stretch them out. They do checks for whether the hip is dislocated which can be common but happens in utero rather than by method of birth and is usually sorted by a bit of physio.

Nettee · 22/08/2007 17:23

MrsMar - sorry to hear you aren't so convinced by your midwife's palpation. Hope she is right though. if she decides it is breech at 38 weeks, time is getting a bit tight...

My baby was transverse today. The midwife got on the phone to the consultant who said not to worry until 37 weeks so I am booked in to see them next Tuesday - when we will discuss admission or ECV or what the plan might be. So I have until then to get up to date with paper work, shopping and packing before the possibility of up to 5 weeks in hospital. (surely not)
