If you have been induced due to big baby!

How big was your baby on a scan compared to birth weight?

Just had a scan at 32+1 and baby is measuring 5 LB 4! He is on the top line so any bigger and he will be above it, I see my consultant at 35+5 so have another scan before then and she will decide if I need to be induced.

I was offered induction with both my big babies and refused. I had two perfectly manageable short labours and no complications. So don’t automatically go for induction unless they have good reasons or you want to.

HJWT · 25/08/2019 17:25

@BertrandRussell how much did they weigh if you don't mind me asking?

I was induced with DD (had gestational diabetes) and she was 8LB 9 but measured 6LB 2 at 36 week scan! I don't have diabetes this time but he is already measuring 5LB 4, I know the scans aren't always accurate but I can tell he is big x

Not at all. They were 9.9 and 10.6.

olivo · 25/08/2019 17:48

I had gestational diabetes with Dc2, who they were expecting to be around 9 1/2lb, she was 7lb2 when delivered 10 days early.

HJWT · 25/08/2019 17:49

@BertrandRussell did you go over ? X

thinkingcapon · 25/08/2019 17:51

I was told I'd have an 11lb er.....refused induction as didn't believe them as so many people saying how inaccurate these scans were!
Baby due 14 days late....8lb 14

Gruntvsgunt · 25/08/2019 17:51

My scan at 36weeks estimated him at 7lb. I didn’t get induced and had a 10lb 8oz baby a couple of weeks later x

HJWT · 25/08/2019 17:52

@olivo I see a lot of stories like yours! Hopefully that is how it will go for me but I doubt it as DD was big 🥴 xx

HJWT · 25/08/2019 17:53

@Gruntvsgunt wow! Was you induced or did it just happen naturally early? X

Ds was measuring 4lb 11oz at 31weeks. They told me he would be 10lb if he got to 40 weeks so they wanted him out by his due date. I was induced at 39+5, he was born at 39+6 and was 10lb 12oz. So I'm glad he was induced and they didn't let him go overdue Grin
With my first, he was 6lb at 31 weeks and was born at 38 weeks 9lb 6oz

BertrandRussell · 25/08/2019 17:53

BertrandRussell did you go over ? X

Yes/ but not by much- 4 days and 3 days I think.

HJWT · 25/08/2019 17:55

@Whattodo20192 OMG I think I need to buy some more 0-3! Iv only got Up To 1 month 🤦🏻‍♀️

MustardScreams · 25/08/2019 17:56

I was told dd would be 10lb+.

Went into labour at 39+5 and she was 6lb 11.

Gruntvsgunt · 25/08/2019 17:57

@HJWT I declined to be induced so yep just happened, it did result in Emergency CS though. My second baby was slightly smaller at 9 12, he was born at 38 weeks by elective C section ,
Good luck xx

MissBattleaxe · 25/08/2019 17:57

I was induced bang on my due date and DS was 10lb13!

jelly79 · 25/08/2019 18:03

I was advised to be induced a week early as baby was likely to be 10.5lb and I would be likely for csection.

I agreed and was induced on the Tuesday morning and didn't actually give birth till the Saturday evening to an 8.6lb boy. He wasn't ready and the 5 days on the induction suite was unnecessary and stressful.

Whattodo20192 · 25/08/2019 18:04

@HJWT I only bought 0-3 months, there was no point buying smaller.

Just want to add that I found the induction process to be very calm and controlled and it was much easier giving birth than with my first smaller child. I only ended up with a small tear and even found the recovery much easier.

Bigpizzalover · 25/08/2019 18:08

They said my DC would be over 9lb according to the growth scans that I was having.... had DC at 39+6 at 5lb 13oz.

I don’t believe the scans. If you feel induction is necessary then have it, but scans can be wrong so I would consider all pros and cons

pooopypants · 25/08/2019 18:35

38+6 DD was born. She was 'big' and I had low fluid. She was 7lb5oz at birth, she was LONG though and I was told afterwards that weight estimation is partly based on leg length / measurements

hormonesorDHbeingadick · 25/08/2019 18:39

I was offered induction at 38 weeks but I refused and booked a c section for 39 weeks. Baby was predicted to be 10lb at 40 weeks and first had been 9lb 9oz - no diabetes in either pregnancy. I tried every trick to encourage labour and my baby was born by vbac at 38+1 and weight 8lb 11oz so on track to be a 10lb baby at 40 weeks.

hormonesorDHbeingadick · 25/08/2019 18:40

How many growth scans have you had? I thought they have to do 3 to make a good estimate.

Spoonsmum · 25/08/2019 18:50

I had a big first baby (9lb9) and suspected gestational diabetes, which was then picked up v early and confirmed with child 2. Was told he would be “massive” (not terrifying at all!) so was always told I would def be induced due to the diabetes and the weight of the baby and my “small frame” whatever difference that makes(?) So went in at 38wks and it took SIX DAYS for the induction to work. It was without a doubt the most stressful time of my life, I was stuck in a bed being prodded and poked and god knows what being all over emotional and missing my daughter. Eventually went into labour and he was 9lb 7, so a week early but I really feel like the size was over stressed as a reason for induction. And although the first was bigger it was a much less stressful birth and perfectly do able in my opinion.

Consequently had two more babies, both tiny (6-6.5) the last of which was also induced due to diabetes where the induction worked in what felt like minutes but which was by FAR the most painful birth of the lot.

LifeIsGoodish · 25/08/2019 19:27

If you've already given birth to a large baby, then your body can do it.

My dc3 was estimated to be very big -which didn't surprise me, as my other dc had been 8'10 and 9'3. Consultant wanted induction at 39w, but senior midwife supported me in my assertion that I had proven that I could birth a big baby. As it happens, dc3 exceeded all expectations: my easiest birth, and so much bigger than their estimate that they had to get a different chart to record her birthweight of 11lb.

ChanklyBore · 25/08/2019 19:38

I was told dc1 was small and dc2 was big. Growth scan for dc1 due to worry over size of bump, estimated 6lb ish at birth. No growth scan for dc2 (because i didn’t see the point) despite lots of tutting and oohing and feeling of the bump saying he’s a good size, all baby that bump etc and whatever. Midwife offered an estimate of 9.5lb (usually when trying to dissuade me from some aspect of my birth plan).

“Small baby” 1 was a smidge on the small side at a mighty 7.10 and “giant baby” 2 was a boringly average 8.8 so not remarkably different and both entirely run of the mill weights.

17caterpillars1mouse · 25/08/2019 19:50

Going by scans they thought she'd be 9 and a half pounds (6 growth scans). I was induced. She came out 6lb 9oz
