Brown bleeding - reassurance please

Hi everyone, this is my first post.

I already have a little boy who is 17 months and am expecting baby number 2. I am currently 6 weeks pregnant. We tried for 11 months to get pregnant both times.

3 days ago I noticed brown spotting in my knickers. My midwife got me an appointment for a scan. The sonographer said there was no fetal pole yet but there was the yolk sac, and she thinks I am early than I thought. I have to go back in 2 weeks for another scan. She said the blood is old blood probably from implantation.

The brown blood has got darker today and I've had seen 2 bits of tissue about 1mm wide and 3mm long. I'm so so so scared that I'm slowly losing the baby. Can anyone offer me words of hope to keep me going?

Hi there. I'm around 6 weeks - haven't seen my midwife yet, due to see her next week. I've also started having a bit of brown spotting today and like you have been worrying. Looking online it says that it's old blood and probably nothing to worry about. Try to stay relaxed and calm as you can - I know it's hard (it's all I can think about). I don't know whether I should telephone the doctors... or just wait and see if it passes... it's so difficult!

I'd ring the midwife as at least you'll get a scan then to reassure you that all is ok.

Sorry I just seen you've not seen the midwife yet. Yes, I'd ring the doctors, they'd be able to get you in for an early scan.

Are you sure it's tissue? It's probably mucus discharge. There's nothing you can do. I know that's no help but it sounds like things are currently ok and there's good reason to hope that it'll all pan out.

millymally · 19/08/2019 14:15

Almost the exact same thing happened to me twice during the first 12 weeks. Two instances of bleeding (both brown and bright red) and with what I thought was clots. Had two internal scans and the baby's heart was beating away both times. I was told it was possibly implantation bleeding the first time, and wasn't really given an explanation the second time ('these things can happen'). I am now the proud owner of a 9 week old. Fingers crossed for you - hope this offers some reassurance x

I went for my scan and there's a fetal pole and heartbeat!! I had been in tears in the waiting room expecting the worst. I can hardly believe it as I had convinced myself.

I still have brown bleeding but they said it's old blood and there's no problem as far as they can see.

I’m so glad you’re ok! I had the same thing about 5/6 weeks with my third baby and it lasted for a few days. He was fine too.

Windydaysuponus · 21/08/2019 15:35

Great news!!

DerbyshireGirly · 21/08/2019 16:08

Brilliant news OP, hope everything continues to develop well Smile

nicola18737 · 21/08/2019 16:43

Thanks all. I just went to the loo and about 3 drops of red blood came out. Trying to tell myself it’s normal

Any update op? Hope there is no more blood. Ttc is a tough business....

brummiemumm · 22/08/2019 19:39

Hi all. Saw the doctor yesterday about brown discharge and he said not to worry. However, later on the evening I had some blackish/reddish blood yesterday, just one lot so went to A&E. Waited for 6 hours to be seen by a doctor at midnight who said from what I'd told them they think I've miscarried. She then did a speculum examination and said my cervix was slightly open so I am highly likely to miscarry. We are gutted. I've had no more bleeding today and just feel like it's all a ticking time bomb - I'm just waiting for it to happen now and petrified about the pain and bleeding.

nicola18737 · 22/08/2019 20:07

@brummiemumm I'm so sorry. Thats horrible news to hear. Have they done a scan at all? I wouldn't give up hope yet as surely the cervix must be slightly open in order for the blood to come out.

I understand how terrifying it is waiting for it to happen, terrified ever time you go to the loo. If it makes you feel better, my friend told me at 6 weeks its just like a period and don't hurt.

I'd be ringing your local Early Pregnancy Unit and asked them to do you a scan. I did that today and I'm in for tomorrow afternoon.

@Windydaysuponus there was more blood today so I'm having another scan tomorrow afternoon, thanks for asking :)

brummiemumm · 22/08/2019 20:23

@nicola18737 thanks for replying. Nope, no scans. She saw me for about 5 mins and just did the speculum examination.
Hope everything goes well for you.

nicola18737 · 22/08/2019 20:28

@brummiemumm oh I'd definitely ring your EPU then tomorrow. No one has even looked in my vagina and I'm on my third scan tomorrow.

Please don't give up hope, but I know that can be easier than dealing with disappointment. If everything is ok tonight ring them in morning x

I’m currently 16 weeks pregnant after a round of IVF. I had bleeding from 5 weeks it started off as brown and progressed to red and pink and every colour in between. I had to have 3 early scans at my local EPU due the bleeding and found out I had a sub-chorionic bleed underneath the babies sac, at roughly 9.5 weeks I had a massive gush of bright red blood while I was at work and I went to A&E due to the fact I was bleeding through a pad every half an hour, they couldn’t do much for me just checked my HCG levels and also did a cervix exam to see if my cervix was closed. After that big bleed I’ve had brown blood every day which finally stopped around 13 weeks and I haven’t bled for almost 2 weeks now which I hope is a sign the bleed has been re-absorbed. It was such a scary time and I felt for sure I’d lost my little boy several times, but thankfully not. My midwife said any bleeding during pregnancy isn’t normal however lots of women do get bleeding that doesn’t mean it will end in miscarriage. Hope all goes well for you OP (original post/poster), I’ll keep everything crossed x

nicola18737 · 22/08/2019 20:36

@June340oo Thank you for sharing. That's a relief that you seem to have had the same bleeding I am having. No one has mentioned my HCG levels which I am a bit annoyed about as I'm sure they'd be able to tell me from that if everything was going ok.

When could they tell it was a sub-chorionic bleed? They didn't mention anything at my 5 or 6 week scan.

OP posts:
June340oo · 22/08/2019 20:42

@nicola18737

They saw the sub-chorionic bleed at 6.5 weeks at the first early scan at the EPU. The sonographer said she could see a little pocket of blood underneath the yolk sac and measured it 1.1cmx2.7cm, again when we went at 8 weeks it was slightly smaller and at 9.5 weeks after the big gush of red blood they scanned and could see bleeding but it was roughly the same size. I haven’t bled for a few weeks now so I’m assuming it’s been re-absorbed. When they did the HCG test at the a&e she did say if you were having a miscarriage your HCG levels remain high anyway so that wouldn’t be a good indicator to know if baby was ok. Are you having internal scans? If you have another ask them to really look around in there. x

nicola18737 · 22/08/2019 20:45

@June340oo thanks for the info. I bet you were so relieved when they found that bleed. Its so scary just not knowing where the blood is coming from.

Yes I have a scan tomorrow afternoon. I will ask her to have a look to see if she can see any pockets of blood. Thank you.

June340oo · 22/08/2019 20:50

@nicola18737

Yes it was so scary, our son is a result of IVF so he is a miracle in itself so to be bleeding every day and not knowing why was heart breaking. Yes knowing why I was bleeding bought some comfort I suppose. I hope your scan goes well tomorrow.

stimulatemymind · 22/08/2019 20:51

My mum bled all through her pregnancy and here I am 😀

brummiemumm · 22/08/2019 20:52

@nicola18737 best of luck for tomorrow

nicola18737 · 22/08/2019 21:57

@brummiemumm thanks. I hope things get better for you

nicola18737 · 23/08/2019 07:29

Well this morning it’s exactly the same as a period. I don’t know what to think as I thought it was getting better but it’s getting worse, dark red and clots. Looking forward to my scan this afternoon.
