Three weeks pregnant and bleeding

I'm three weeks and five days pregnant. I've been bleeding for six days now. I went to GP and referred me to scan to confirm if it's in or outside womb. I spoke to nurse on phone and they said we wouldn't be able to tell at this stage. I asked how do I know if it's a miscarriage or not. She said take another pregnancy test on Monday and if it's a faint line (fainter than last test) then probably not pregnant, but only time can tell if it's a miscarriage or not. She said call again on Monday. Did any of you bleed (pink/brown) this early on in pregnant and what happened? Should have insisted on scan at three weeks ? Nurse said they can't tell anything at three weeks. Appreciate any comments. Ps I already have two children and no bleeding before

Hi I’m sorry you’re going through this. I am experiencing something similar. If found out I was pregnant last week and then started spotting 7 days later at 4+2. The midwife and GP both said it is too early for a scan at four weeks and you just need to wait it out. If bleeding and pain doesn’t get worse then you could be scanned at around 6 weeks when they can see what’s going on. In my case bleeding became heavier the next day (like a heavy period) and is now slowing down so I think it was a chemical pregnancy / very early miscarriage.

I was spotting on Tuesday, bleeding heavily on Wednesday, lighter yesterday. I was also told by both midwife and GP to test in a week (so next Tuesday for me).

They say bleeding can happen in pregnancy and everything can be ok, and I think that’s true, but in my case it’s period type bleeding so that’s how I’m thinking if it.

Hope you get the outcome you want

QueenOfPain · 09/08/2019 12:10

They are correct, there is nothing to be seen on a scan yet. Scans before 6 weeks aren’t really any use. Unfortunately only time will tell at this point.

If you start getting a lot of pain or heavy bleeding you should go to A&E.

baby1baby2 · 09/08/2019 12:26

Thank you. It's a waiting game. Do you think I should do a pregnancy test every few days ? Not much bleeding today. I did my first test (clear blue) yesterday and it came back positive despite the bleeding earlier on.

They told me to wait a week from when the bleeding started. If negative then probably and early MC. If positive they said to test again after a week and by then they might be able to scan me if still positive.

Teddybear45 · 09/08/2019 12:57

If it’s pink / brown chances are good that it might not be a miscarriage. I had brown spotting around 4 weeks (then at 8 and 12) and was told each time by the mw that if it isn’t red not to worry. Are you 3+4 weeks? If so it’s possible to see whether it’s a miscarriage or not on an early scan - try and get a private one done if your EPU isn’t willing.

baby1baby2 · 09/08/2019 13:08

Thank you ! I tend to feel like the next week or so I will be thinking , it is a miscarriage or not. Do you think a scan will definitively confirm miscarriage or not ? One the questions I was asked was; was if a strong dark blue line or not on the pregnancy test. Both look strong/dark to me but the nurse said yes but it could still be a miscarriage. I guess I prefer to know either way and ASAP rather than sit here waiting to do another test next week and looking for a light or dark blue line.

The advice to take a pregnancy test less than a month after a proposed miscarriage is really shoddy to be honest. I had the faintest lines throughout the early part of my pregnancy - whether the line is faint or not doesn’t confirm anything except that your body still has hcg. If you’re 3+4 then you are technically 7 weeks pregnant which is when fertility clinics are able to confirm viability or not. Try a private provider - they should definitely be able to see something.

nicannie · 09/08/2019 13:13

I have had constant bleeding for the last 4 weeks on and off. It went on for 2 weeks in a row every day, and then it was just here and there. Every time I phoned for advice I got told to just wait it out as I wasn't having any cramping etc, fair to say it has been the worst month of my life with anxiety and not being able to sleep with worry of what was going on.

I finally booked in an early scan and went yesterday, they measured me at 8w+4 where as the doctors thought I was 9w+3, but that doesn't really matter I guess. But, I have a positive outcome as on the ultrasound it showed a very fast flickering heartbeat which is considered healthy and normal at this stage, everything was as it should have been. I mentioned the bleeding and they had a look around my ovaries and cervix, she found a small cyst and also some erosion in my cervix which is causing the bleeding, she actually pointed out the white speckles which was blood waiting to come out - so I can expect it for another little while I guess. But none of it was near the growing baby and all seems to be fine! It isn't always negative when you bleed, I hope everything is ok for you as it was for me OP!

baby1baby2 · 09/08/2019 13:55

Thanks for all your comments. Can a scan confirm if miscarriage or not ? Or would I need bloods? I get the feeling I will be sitting around for the next three more weeks, until six weeks pregnant until it can be confirmed if I'm pregnant or not. Surely I can confirm sooner?

OP posts:
Teddybear45 · 09/08/2019 14:00

Yes it can at 7 weeks: there would just he an empty sac.

Teddybear45 · 09/08/2019 14:01

Remember day of test you are 4 weeks pregnant:

Bambamber · 09/08/2019 14:02

You cannot see anything on a scan at 3 weeks so they cannot confirm or rule out a miscarriage. Baby and heart beat generally can't be seen until 6+ weeks.

PotteringAlong · 09/08/2019 14:02

If you’re 3+5 pregnant I’m amazed you’ve got a positive pregnancy test. Is this not just your normal period, 26 days after the last one?

Teddybear45 · 09/08/2019 14:03

So if you are 3 weeks pregnant after the test they will be able to see

nicannie · 09/08/2019 14:03

@baby1baby2 I can't comment on that 100%, every time I called even after 6 weeks they didn't want to scan me at my local EPU, which really frustrated me. Hence I booked the private scan that I had yesterday.

She confirmed heartbeat, I think this reduces the risk of miscarriage now for me down to only 5% roughly. I've had no bloods taken at all yet, but have my routine 12 weeks scan on 28th Aug, I think they will do my bloods then. It's so difficult and I've been in your position, it really isn't nice. Try your best to stay calm, not get too worried or worked up as it won't help. If the bleeding does get a lot worse, or you get bad cramping I'd definitely push to be seen sooner!

Have you got the option to potentially book a private scan for around 8 week? I know that is still a while to wait, but that's what I had to do and it's really put my mind at ease.

SoyDora · 09/08/2019 14:05

When did you get your first positive pregnancy test?

baby1baby2 · 09/08/2019 15:10

First pregnancy test at 3 weeks + 5 days. Yesterday and I only took it as I was bleeding and wasn't sure if pregnant or miscarriage. Then it was positive

OP posts:
QueenOfPain · 09/08/2019 15:19

When was the first day of your last period?

We are struggling to understand how many weeks pregnant you actually are.

baby1baby2 · 09/08/2019 15:31

My first positive pregnancy test was at 3 weeks and 5 days. Yesterday. First day of last period Sunday 14 July.

Keyboard91 · 09/08/2019 15:45

Hi OP, I found out I was pregnant at 3w+5 with my first pregnancy but bleeding for 2 solid days was a bad sign for me. It is too early to see anything this early on (NHS or private) which is why they won’t scan you. I tested everyday and looked at the lines to see if they got darker or lighter as a way to track whether it was a chemical pregnancy which it was that time for me.

The only thing they may do is a blood test to check your HCG level, and then another one 2 days later. If your levels double then it could be okay, but if they don’t it’ll confirm that it hasn’t worked this time xx

QueenOfPain · 09/08/2019 15:48

So there is definitely nothing to see on a scan for another couple of weeks, you technically haven’t missed a period yet.

As I said before it is going to be a case of waiting, which is rubbish, but that’s just biology.

baby1baby2 · 09/08/2019 15:50

Thank you Keyboard. Really appreciate. My GP nor nurse explained the bloods to me. I'll get bloods next week. I don't want to sit around for the next two/three weeks not knowing

OP posts:
ReeReeR · 09/08/2019 15:50

If you’re 3+4 then you are technically 7 weeks pregnant

What are you talking about?

OP said from the outset she is 3+5 and this is correct based on LMP. Why confuse things by telling OP she is 7 weeks?

OP a scan could confirm whether you are pregnant or not but probably not this early. I have read of some people having scans at five weeks but my GP and midwife told me they won’t scan before 6 weeks.

Pink/brown could just be implantation bleeding. I am bleeding red blood, like af, which is why I’m pretty sure it’s early mc so don’t mean to make it seem you are in the same situation.

baby1baby2 · 09/08/2019 15:55

Thanks Ree, this is all new to me... it's the uncertainty that is killing me. Plus to think I've got to wait another three weeks. Unless I bleed a lot of red blood then I will just guess that it's a miscarriage !

OP posts:
Casander · 09/08/2019 18:48

I don't want to get your hopes up OP just incase things don't work out for you, but I had this at the same dates as you, along with horrific cramping and I lost a couple of small clots a couple of days later.

They actually "diagnosed" a miscarriage over the phone and told me I didn't need to come for a scan.

My exh made me go for the scan (I was unsure of dates so ended up being scanned at 5 weeks not 6) and DS is now 10 in a couple of weeks!

Good luck Thanks
