Gro-Bags!!? (not sure where to post this...)

My baby is now 3 months old and we've just moved her out of our room and into her own room and cot. She's sleeping well but over night she wriggles up out of the tucked in blanket and gets chilly! Has anyone tried a baby sleeping bag?? are they safe/any good? I'm a bit concerned about her over heating in a sleeping bag? (wasn't sure where to post this so sorry if it's in the wrong bit).

They are brilliant, the grobag company gives excellent advice re temp and what to put babe in. My two have always been in them and good sleepers after the nb phase HTH

My three babies have had them and they are fab. Much safer than blankets and recommended by FSIds.

Lots of people use them - mothercare etc do their own brands which are a bit cheaper than the Gro-bag own.
They always come with a tag saying how many clothes to put underneath depending on the room temperature, and anywhere that sells them will have a chart too.

Grobags come in different tog weights (anything from heavy winter weight to a 0.5 tog that's more like a sheet weight) and if you buy an official Grobag also come with a handy room thermometer and a guide to how many layers of clothing you can safely combine with different weights of Grobag for a particular room temperature.

Anyway, they are great -- heartily recommend! You'd probably want 1.0 tog or 0.5 tog in the summer (when it was really hot we'd put DS to bed in just a nappy and a 0.5 tog Grobag).

DS has a 0.5 tog grobag, we chose that tog so he'd be ok when v. hot but we can add blanket on top if necessary

love them...

my dd as soon as she goes into her grobag knows is sleeptime and starts sucking her thumb....

0.5 perfect for summer

if too hot just put baby on with a nappy

2.5 perfect for winter

You just need to control the temperature of the room and use common sense....

my dd is nearly 18 months and still using them...

fab fab fab - we used asda own ones though (we have twins, so when u need to buy two of everything, you look for bargains where u can!)....they last til they are about one, then we went to here when they got bigger.

I have a bit of a different view. We hated them and used fleecy all in one suits instead. My daughter would roll and wriggle constantly and the grobag would get twisted across her body to the point it was cutting into the side of her neck. I don't think they suit very active babies. Some places do a half bag with an elasticated bit that goes round the waist so the baby's legs are covered.

I used them with ds from about 2 months or so when he came out of his moses basket and could fit in the 0-6 months size right up until he went in his bed at 2 and a bit. they were brilliant and he has always been a great sleeper. This time I have a newborn size one and may even try a bit earlier as we found blankets a real faff. I always use the grobag brand ones in the early days even though they are a bit more expensive for reassurance as their advice is very comprehensive and research based I think. Later you can get cheaper ones and TKMaxx often do the grobag ones cheaper too.

yes to the spares and I also found that later on, what with the British weather, holidays etc, you normally need a 2.5 tog and a 0.5 tog in the bigger sizes.

meeely2 i have just found out im having twins too and have been thinking about cots and blankets and sleeping etc etc ,we are going ot have a couple of moses baskets downstairs for during the day but put both babies in one cot at night to start with,would this work with both of them in gro bags too do you think? was thinking of grobags instead of blankets so that when one moves the other doesnt lose out on blanket lol just like sharing a bed wiht your hubby eh!
Not sure it would work and how young i could have them in them,any advice would be amazing as we are fumbling in the dark here with the twins thing

MY DS slept so much better in a gro bag - I did have the same fears as you, but you can get the different weights as people have said.

Ds only came out of his when we put him into a baby bed with no side (thought it was a bit cruel to leave him and let him roll out!!)

mini - we didn't have moses baskets but wished we had after the event - the boys slept in bouncy chairs or on a folded up duvet on the floor (we were skint!).

anyway back to the sleeping bag thing, we had our boys in with us for 2 months (until they were 4 months as they were in hosp for 2 months), they shared a cot, had an end each, we used the safababy sleeper to divide the cot and at first used blankets because they were so small (should only use sleeping bags from 7lbs up).

Eventually they got to big for half a cot, so we had to move them into their own room (we don't have room for two cots in our room). At that point we bought another safababy sleeper to make their cots a bit smaller and put them in their own cot and started to use sleeping bags.

You willknow what to do when your babies arrive they do kind of lead you....if you are getting moses baskets you can use those at night in your bedroom at first, cos cots can swamp them initially, they don't like having too much room to move.

john lewis do grobags too and they're cheaper than the grobag companies ones. They have them from 0.5-2.5tog.

They're also good for preventing you lo from getting their legs stuck in the bars of the cot, and when they're older, from trying to climb out!

mimime (sorry hijack) my dts are 17 weeks and are both in grobags and as are both in the same cot at night. But the dt's nursery and lounge is on the same floor.

Another twin mummies mumsnetter had two cotbeds, one upstairs and one downstairs - cos you will need two eventually. Would save on cost of two moses baskets.

I buy my Grobags BNIPs from Ebay. There are several reliable nursery dealers on there.

they are fantastic - my DD was and is a real wriggler when sleeping. she used to manage to get sheets etc off in about 5 minutes flat, wake up cold etc. but the grobags kept her cosy so we all got more sleep. she was in one from about 2 months till 22 months (when she refused to get into it)
