Silver Cross 3D? other lightish travel systems?

Hi, I'm new to Mumsnet and expecting first baby at the end of October. I've been reading endless reviews of prams/buggies/pushchairs etc and am now a bit confused. We have a Peugeot 206 so a small car; I am small and don't want anything mega heavy, and was thinking about the Silver Cross 3D. Does anyone have one? or does anyone have any suggestions as to a good travel system?
Thank you!

I have one. It is good but heavy when collapsed and quite large. It only just fitted into my 206 boot so we changed car to an old style Astra.

MrsBadger · 31/07/2007 20:11

We tried it and found it too low and rattly, but both DH and I are strapping, we're not short on boot space and we do a lot of walking.

Question you have to ask is do you really want a travel system, ie will you be using just the car seat onto the chassis a lot? (remember they're not meant to regularly stay in the carseat longer than an hour or so). If not it's worth considering a seperate carseat and a pushchair that ticks more of your boxes, if that makes sense...

ChocolateHobnob · 31/07/2007 20:16

Hi Wilkie and MrsBadger,
Low isn't a problem for me - DH is medium height I guess. I think the problem is we don't really know what we want! I suppose we don't really want just the car seat on the chassis v much. We want, I think:

  • something that will fit in our boot - I guess we have to live with things that JUST fit in since we have a small boot!
  • something q light
  • something the baby can lie flat in as newborn facing me
  • something the baby can also sit forward facing in as she/he gets older

Quite happy to buy a car seat separately and leave it in the car.

Do you have any ideas? Thanks.

TBH - I would buy a car seat separately. We have a second hand Brittax one from my sis which does the job.

DH is 6' and I am 5'1" - neither of us find the height a prob.

I will take up all of your boot space. I did like it for newborn when he faced me. Other than that I wouldn't buy it again but not sure which other ones to recommend. It is a minefield!

does sound like a pramette type would suit you - compare the 3D to the M&P Pliko pramette and the Chicco Trio

Hi there,

found this website www.babyfy.com, they are in beta (whatever it means) but amazing information.

check out www.babyfy.com/index.php/product-review/2527/Mamas-and-Papas-Pliko-Pramette/

I have an old MP, freestyler, it is great.

mummyto2littleprincess · 31/07/2007 21:24

i thin the silvercross 3d systems are really nice

mummyto2littleprincess · 31/07/2007 21:25

freestylers are nice but i think they are too big and hard to fit in many cars they just about fit in my parents escort

charlotteryder · 31/07/2007 21:40

True, the freestyler requires a big boot.

ChocolateHobnob · 01/08/2007 06:42

Wilkie, I had considered buying a car seat separately too. What I didn't say was that I don't drive and baby and I will be going around on foot a lot, and possibly on the Metro. When DH is there we'll be in the car though and my parents live nearby and we'll be in their car a lot too.

Charlotte, I had thought all Mamas and Papas systems were huge! That one's lovely. I think we need to go to John Lewis and start road testing. Thing is we really need to put them in the car and see how they fit, too...!

Thanks again everyone!

im torn between the silver cross 3d and the M+P Pramette....
Think the pramette is winning by a tad at the moment though?!

designerbaby · 01/08/2007 11:12

I did a whole day of test driving travel systems and decided that the M&P Pliko was the best by a country mile - ingenious system makes it really versatile and simple to change around from pram to pushchair, plus it was by far the lightest and easiest to manoevre.

I'm a small lass, so the weight/size thing was really key - some of the others were just ha-uge, this one was just really neat and well thought out.

Folds down pretty small - I think you'll be fine unless your boot really is tiny...

Go for a test drive or two - I would.

M&P LOOKS really nice too..

BTW Choc - I'm on the October board too [waves emphaitically] and due just before you - on the 27th!

Where are you based?

I haven't been to any shops yet to test drive, so I guess that's the next step. I like the look of the Pliko now I've seen it! What colour will you go for designerbaby? Do you know if yours is a boy/girl? (I don't)

I'm in Newcastle... Hence not being bothered about using a bus but I will probably use the Metro sometimes.

I'm going for the grey polka, I think... Liked the cream and red, but thought it would get grubby quickly... plus the grey is more gender-neutral, I thought.

We're having a little girl - but trying to keep as much gender-neutral as possible in case there's ever a number 2 of the other flavour!

I'm in London, which is why I wanted something small and light enough to manage on tubes and buses - since driving ANYWHERE here is now a budget-busting criminal offence...

Had a look on babyfy but they dont seem to review Greco pushchairs, which is a PITA because that's what we're going to be getting!!

MrsBadger · 01/08/2007 11:45

Which Graco were you looking at, RGPargy? has MN reviewed it?

thehairybabysmum · 01/08/2007 12:00

Chicco Trio is fab...i have one, folds up fairly small but is not as flimsy for baby as pliko

RGPargy · 01/08/2007 13:38

I was looking at buying the Graco Quattro Deluxe Tour Travel System. I read on Ciao that it's quite heavy and bulky so i may need to have a play with it properly at Toys R Us and spend lots of time putting it up and down and lifting it about to see how heavy it really is.

The thing i like about it is the big wheels as i found that the smaller wheels of something like a maclaren buggy would get caught on the tiniest of stones on the road and be a bit of a nuisance so am really looking for bigger wheels. I dont like the three wheelers tho so they are out!

RGPargy · 01/08/2007 13:44

hairybabysmum - £469 for a pushchair in Toys R Us???!!!!

thehairybabysmum · 01/08/2007 14:12

You will get a much better deal on the internet though...i got mine from kiddicare for £280 for car seat, carrycot and buggy. includes footmuff and raincover for buggy too, though you do need to buy sep rain cover for carrycot bit. Buggy raincover fits in pocket in hood...you dont need to fill up your shopping basket with it.

Ds is now 20 months and i still use buggy as is umbrella type...havent had to go out and buy a maclaren like my mate who bought M&P system.

Defo dont pay that much though...outrageous!

RGPargy · 01/08/2007 14:32

Hmm... will look on kiddicare then! Thanx!

RGPargy · 01/08/2007 14:34

Just found the Chicco CT 0.1 Trio Auto-fix Travel System on kiddicare and it's still £419!! Was yours in a sale or summat? I personally really couldn't justify paying that much for a pushchair or a travel system!

thehairybabysmum · 01/08/2007 15:39

umm..think the autofix is a dearer vaeersion of what i have as it has one of those click on car seat bases that stays in the car all the time.

Found this link to Littlewoods
chicco

found this one on ebay but brand new cgi.ebay.co.uk/CHICCO-TRIO-ENJOY-BUGGY-CAR-SEAT-CARRYCOT-MANHATTAN-NEW_W0QQitemZ280133798349Q QihZ018QQcategoryZ66700QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

and this one for the autofix but only if you like v. girly pink...personally dont think that looks a practical colour! www.kiddisave.co.uk/do/product/3in1prams/chiccotrioautofix.html

blimey or finally a better colour in mothercare www.mothercare.com/gp/product/B000QTH88C/sr=1-8/qid=1185979070/ref=sr_1_8/026-4732843-5673200 ?ie=UTF8&m=A2LBKNDJ2KZUGQ&n=44353031&mcb=core

RGPargy · 01/08/2007 15:57

That's for that hairbabysmum!

eeewww @ the pink coloured one. It looks grubby in that colour!!

I will go and have a play with the pushchairs tonight

Princesspowersparkle · 01/08/2007 17:28

Hi
I have a silver cross 3D. Its a good little travel system and fits into my Fiesta. I find it quite heavy to lift in and our of my boot though.
