I dont know how far gone i am and dont have midwife appointment until the 9th of august. It could take up to 3-4 weeks after that appointment to get a scan

Im going loopy at the moment with.....when am i due? is it alright? what if theres more than one???? I cant wait another 6 weeks to find out!!

Does anyone know how i could get a scan before seeing midwife? can docs arrange scans??

Your GP could refer you to early pregnancy unit for a scan if you were at risk of miscarriage but not if you are just to excited to wait. You're best bet is to get it done at a private hospital. Lots of Nuffield hospitals do them.

meemar · 29/07/2007 14:31

hi iliketosleep - congratulations!

When you say you aren't sure of your due date, do you have a rough idea (a week or so discrepancy?) or could is it that you have no idea if you are, say, 8 weeks or 16 weeks for example?

If it is the latter I think the mw may try and get you a sooner appointment because it will make a difference to your antenatal care.

Probably unlikely that you will get a scan before you've seen the midwife though.

Why have they given you an appt for 9th Aug - is this based on LMP dates?

iliketosleep · 29/07/2007 14:36

I came off the pill in march and have not had a period since due to v v irregular cycles. So really i could be anything up to 4 months gone! I doubt it but stranger things have happened! I do not have any idea of when i may have concieved and its driving me mad!! I found out nearly 2 weeks ago so when i see midwife i will definatly be over 4 weeks and thats all i got to go on

Have you explained this to GP? I'm quite surprised that with the uncertainty of your dates you still have to wait til 9th Aug to see a mw.

If you are as much as 4 months gone then you are past the usual dating scan time and should be at the stage where you are offered screening blood tests etc. Although you might not want them, you should at least be given the chance to have them.

Is the mw based at your surgery or hospital? May be worth trying to get hold of them directly to explain.

iliketosleep · 29/07/2007 15:48

well my gp said i need a dating scan quickly due to uncertainty of lmp, but when i went to the front desk to book an appointment that is all they gave me, i may go back to docs tomorrow and talk to doctor.

Hi iliketosleep, hope you're feeling better today after your rotten cold!

When I found out I was pregnant I didn't have a clue how far gone I was because my periods were pretty irregular and I'd had a tiny bleed a few weeks earlier which i'd assumed was a period but was most likely an implantation bleed.

When I told my doctor, I stressed that I could be anything up to 4 months pregnant, and I also made a few phonecalls to give the hospital a bit of a shove as they were giving me a scan date that was weeks away. They managed to get me a scan the next week, which confirmed bean was almost 11 weeks.

9th august isn't that far away now though, it's only 11 days away, I don't know if they'll be able to get you anything sooner unless you have a good reason to need an earlier one? The waiting is very frustrating, I can remember feeling in limbo til I saw his little heartbeat on screen! Can sympathise!

emj23 · 29/07/2007 16:41

According to LMP (which have always been all over the place) I was 11 weeks when I first saw MW but didn't think that could possibly be right and because I thought it was wrong I was booked in for a scan really quickly, which showed I was only 7 weeks. I'm surprised that if you're not sure they haven't given you scan quicker, but as the last poster pointed out, it's not that long away now anyway. It'll go by really quickly. Congratulations!

iliketosleep · 29/07/2007 18:48

Hiya BB cold has finally gone thank god i know it is going to fly but its soooooooooooooooo frustrating i wanna see my baby But i think it is very strange how they do not seem overly concerned about it. I may still try talking to the doctor and seeing if i can get him to give them a bit of a kick up the arse

hi if you call the hospital and tell them you have a few belly pains and are worried they will tell you to go the the local hospital for a scan to to reassure you

iliketosleep · 29/07/2007 20:04

now thats a plan! lol

Or try crying. I got whisked in for a scan when I burst into tears in the midwife's office at the ante-natal unit (long story). And I know someone else who got one the same way.

iliketosleep · 29/07/2007 20:50

you cant say long story and not tell us

Either ring up your Early Pregnancy Advice Unit (EPAU) and lie, say you have had bleeding & pain. I am not saying it's good to do this.

Or do what I did, pay 120.00 for a private scan. Check out private hospitals in your area. I went to Harley Street as it was nearest and tbh they did differ in price. It went from 200 to 120, I went for the cheapest.

I'm mad, me

MerlinsBeard · 29/07/2007 21:01

you midwife may well arrange it when you se her. 9th august isn't that far away anyway.

insywinsyspider · 29/07/2007 22:12

you might find your mw has already requested a scan and gives you the date at your appointment, my cycle is v irregular and at my booking in appoint mw had made scan appoint for that week, bit of a welcome supprise, I'd googled private scan tho and found a dating scan locally was £40, they go off lmp but if really earily they might not be able to tell as trained only for dating at 8weeks + could cause you more worry, hth and good luck
please don't lie tho to get early scan, i had big bleed at round 11 weeks and had to wait for scan because clinic so busy, was over bank holiday and they priorised those later in pg, longest wait of my life

Wilkie · 29/07/2007 22:16

"Either ring up your Early Pregnancy Advice Unit (EPAU) and lie, say you have had bleeding & pain. I am not saying it's good to do this."

I realise you're not condoning this UCM but what a fucking stupid idea. Using up appointments for real emergencies and proper problems.

Would have loved that when I was going through my m/c - sorry someone else lied so you're gonna have to wait....

iliketosleep · 29/07/2007 22:17

no i wont lie dont worry lol, I have just found a place called mums in birmingham, early dating scan is 65 might do that instead it says they trained from 6 weeks or something so thatshould be alright

OP posts:
iliketosleep · 29/07/2007 22:18

oh dear :S

OP posts:
UCM · 30/07/2007 01:13

Wilkie, as I have said, I didn't do it, I could afford to go private at the time, but if someone is desparate, then I don't really see the harm in it. If you are going to lose the baby then, thats it. The epau is very helpful if you are prone to ectopic pregnancies.

nappyaddict · 30/07/2007 01:28

but what if someone had a real problem and time was of the essence. like waters breaking early and they need to scan to see if there is enough fluid around the baby to know whether they should induce labour or not?

iliketosleep · 30/07/2007 10:21

whats an early pregnency advise unit? i dont think we have one around here!

OP posts:
LIZS · 30/07/2007 10:26

EPAU is part of the hospital maternity services, a sort of day centre. You can ring them direct once you a confirmed pg and until about 20 weeks, if you have a pg related emergency such as bleeding or pain. MW's there can refer you for a scan or monitoring etc as required

iliketosleep · 30/07/2007 11:12

oh right, well dont think we have one anyway

anyway!!! i have booked myself in for a early dating scan with a place called mums on friday at 2:45 it is £65 and includes pics and a dvd!! how good is that!!!
