Is second baby always bigger?

I'm very newly pregnant with my second, have a 1 yo DS already. Although it's very early days, I'm already starting to feel anxious about the size of baby number 2 as I've heard from loads of people that the second baby is usually bigger than the first. My DS was 11lb at birth!! Did anyone else have a big first baby and a smaller second baby?

I have four each bigger than the last!

MondeoFan · 25/06/2019 09:47

I had a 6lb 2 then a 7lb 12 but I don't think it's true for everyone. I looked massive towards the end

3luckystars · 25/06/2019 09:48

No my second baby was a pound lighter.

Mamabear12 · 25/06/2019 10:11

No, my second was slightly smaller at 2.95kgs and my first 3kg

OneForTheRoadThen · 25/06/2019 10:13

Mine arrived a week later than my first and was almost a pound heavier

hunz · 25/06/2019 10:15

My first was 9lbs 2oz and my second was 7lbs 14oz so not always true Smile

HereForAdvice2019 · 25/06/2019 10:16

Mine was half a pound smaller and over due.

ceebeejeebies · 25/06/2019 10:17

I've had 3 and they've been smaller every time

WhenZogateSuperworm · 25/06/2019 10:17

My second was smaller.

CIT80 · 25/06/2019 10:18

1st and 2nd weighed 7lb 10 - 3rd was 7lb 4

REllenR · 25/06/2019 10:18

My second was almost 2lb heavier (was a week later being born)

4under4our · 25/06/2019 10:18

My first was my biggest!

DippyAvocado · 25/06/2019 10:19

I had two, both girls of the same gestation (40+4 and 40+5). First was 9lb8, second was 9lb2 so a bit lighter. Now they are older the younger one is noticeably smaller built but they were very similar at birth. I think some people have a tendency to carry bigger babies (I am very slim, average height, DH is short and stocky and we were both born prematurely so not sure why mine were on the big side).

It's not always the case though. Gestation and sex can also make a difference.

DS1 was 11lbs 9oz born at 42 weeks. DS2 was 8 lbs 8oz at 39+6. It was very weird having a fairly normal sized newborn after such a massive one!

Pipandmum · 25/06/2019 10:26

I had a 10lb 4oz baby (male) followed by a 9lb 14oz female. He was born at 37 weeks she at 38 weeks.

Teddybear45 · 25/06/2019 10:29

No. I think in the old days when women weren’t as familiar with their own bodies it may have been that they didn’t realise they were pregnant with the first baby and so didn’t eat as well as with subsequent ones. Nowadays it’s probably the opposite - women are more likely to overeat and be cautious about exercise with first pregnancies than second ones and so babies could be smaller.

FindaPenny · 25/06/2019 10:40

My aunty had a 9lb baby then a 6lb baby. I wonder if the age gap between 1st and 2nd makes a difference? So if you have them with a small gap in between the second is smaller as your body is still in some kind of recovery.... Plus you are constantly running around with a little one.

creamcheeseandlox · 25/06/2019 11:06

My second was 3 lb lighter than my first

creamcheeseandlox · 25/06/2019 11:06

3 oz not 3 lb 🤦🏻‍♀️

whenimdreaming · 25/06/2019 11:08

1st born at 37 weeks - 8lb 1
2nd born at 41 weeks - 7lb 10

I was very worried I was going to have a huge baby with my second! Had a growth scan at 36 weeks and they thought she was 8lb at that point.

locketsprocket · 25/06/2019 11:16

Not for me but I don't have big babies mine were
6lbs
5lbs 8oz
6lbs 8oz
5lbs 14oz

Pinkmouse6 · 25/06/2019 11:18

Nope my first DC was 10 lbs, second DC was 9 lbs 6oz. Third DC was my biggest at 10 lbs 3oz, DC4 was tiny, only 8 lbs 5oz.

insancerre · 25/06/2019 11:19

My second was smaller than my first
Ds was 8 lb 6 oz
Dd was only 7lb 13 oz

Pinkmouse6 · 25/06/2019 11:19

My first three were born at 40 weeks, DC4 at 39 weeks. Six year age gap between DC3 and 4 whereas DC1, 2 and 3 were born within 2.5 years so not sure that theory is correct @FindaPenny.

DeadDoorpost · 25/06/2019 11:25

I've been wondering the same, but my sister was lighter than me and a day earlier than me. Brothers on the other hand were both the same weight, with the last one being 7 days later than the other.(all of us were early)
