Is second baby always bigger?

I'm very newly pregnant with my second, have a 1 yo DS already. Although it's very early days, I'm already starting to feel anxious about the size of baby number 2 as I've heard from loads of people that the second baby is usually bigger than the first. My DS was 11lb at birth!! Did anyone else have a big first baby and a smaller second baby?

So good to see that it's definitely not always the case, although knowing my luck baby number 2 will be 12lb or something! Grin

DC1 9lb 10 40+12
DC2 9lb 11 40+1
DC3 10lb 3 40+10 😬
Congratulations op!

My second baby was over 2lbs heavier than my first baby which was a shock as I'd spent the whole pregnancy throwing up and struggling to eat.

However, on the other side, I'm the eldest of 3 kids and I was the heaviest baby my mum had and my youngest sibling was the lightest by almost 2 pounds.

My sister recently had her second baby and her dd weighed exactly the same as the first dc.

So to sum up, there might be a trend for second baby's to be bigger but that doesn't mean yours will be, although I do understand your concern.

My three were all almost exactly the same (to within a couple of oz).

strawberrypenguin · 25/06/2019 12:52

Nope. Mine was smaller. 9lb DS1 6.4lb DS2 same gestational age too

Mrsmummy90 · 25/06/2019 12:54

If it helps, a friend of mine had dc1 at 11lbs and then dc2 was 9lbs 9oz. Xx

Did you have gestational diabetes with your first baby, OP? That can be one cause of such overweight babies. If so, better blood sugar and dietary management in your second should solve the problem.

UterusesBeforeDuderuses · 25/06/2019 23:08

@Babdoc nope, I was tested multiple times and was always negative for diabetes, they don't know why I had such a big baby! Even so, I'm trying to be as healthy as possible for number 2 Smile

I heard that babies with different fathers weigh less than the one before. Not saying yours is. I can't see the logic in that, anyone else heard that one?

MrsMiggins37 · 25/06/2019 23:23

My second was bigger, but only 7lb 7oz vis a vis his 6lb 10 oz brother.

My friend’s second baby was over 3lb smaller than her first (not premature) and my sister’s 3 babies were progressively a pound smaller.

I think girls are more likely to be smaller than boys but no evidence for that!!

Loulabelle0 · 26/06/2019 00:37

@UterusesBeforeDuderuses I was 10lb 11oz and my brother was born 18 months later at 9lbs 6oz so the theory doesn't always follow!

ohdearymemumof3 · 26/06/2019 04:37

My first was 7.5
Second was 8.5
Im now pregnant again and worried this one is 9.5 lol.

My friend has 3 children and hers got lighter not heavier.

My other friend her second was heavier than first and her third was lighter than second.
