When did you first buy something for the baby?

I know this may sound crazy but I would like to go buy something small for the baby but I'm only 14 weeks. I don't think it will Jinx anything I just worry that if something does happen the baby has nothing. So would I be reasonable in buying a small something now or wait until after 20 weeks or however long?

We bought a few bits at 12 weeks!! MIL even bought our pram just after 12 week scan! I'm now 26 + 3 and we've got near enough everything sorted - treat yourself to something it's exciting!

owlofathena · 04/06/2019 14:13

With dd we bought a sleepsuit straight after our 12 week scan and I plan to do the same for this baby.
We slowly started buying things as and when we saw them. We bought our pram and car seat at 19 weeks. We were planning on waiting longer before buying it but the colour I wanted pram in was discontinued so was being sold for a great price.
I would buy things when you feel comfortable doing it. It's so tempting to start buying baby things and I found I would treat myself to small purchases every once in a while so things felt real for me

tisonlymeagain · 04/06/2019 14:16

I can't remember with my first pregnancies, I think I just started picking up things every now and again. I am pregnant now (it's very early days) but after the scan (if all goes well) I shall probably buy a little outfit or something just to make it seem real.

I'm not superstitious as a rule and I don't think to buy anything is going to jinx anything.

ilovecatsabittoomuch · 04/06/2019 14:22

I don't think buying things will jinx anything. I was buying baby stuff before we even got pregnant. What I would say though is that your taste changes and 9 months is a long time. Also be aware of the season your baby will be born in when buying clothes :)

MummyBear405 · 04/06/2019 14:46

My sister has already bought something for our baby and I'm only 7 weeks! I don't think you'd jinx it by buying something, do what feels right.

CatSmize · 04/06/2019 15:26

I bought a travel system at about 13w. It was a bargain so definitely not worth waiting!

TDLO · 04/06/2019 15:30

I've been debating this with myself. My SIL asked me what she could buy us and what's in our list... I'm only 11+3 so haven't done a list yet. I'm not incredibly superstitious but I am worried about having things to deal with if something bad happens. There is also small voice about jinxing things in the back of my head. (Mmc in Jan really hasn't helped settle my nerves).

After my 12 week scan next Monday, I'm going to treat myself to a baby comforter that I have had my eye on and hoping that the scan puts my mind at rest and can start to think about things practically. Time will
Come sooner than we know and who knows when baby will make an appearance. I do want to be organised.

Great to hear everyone's thoughts on this. Good question!! 😊

Zoeputthatdown · 04/06/2019 15:34

A very long time ago but after 12 weeks it was impossible to resist picking up little items. Smile

ilovecatsabittoomuch · 04/06/2019 15:42

@CatSmize I did exactly the same thing- just got stuff when there were deals on! Glad I did it saved a lot of money rather than waiting till the end and buying all in one go- gulp!!!

CharminglyGawky · 04/06/2019 16:56

I bought a really lovely babygrow from jojo mamen just after the 12 week scan, started properly looking to buy stuff after the 20 week scan. But I would not have not bought on principal had a seen a good deal iyswim.

I had pretty much all I was planning to buy before baby was due by about a month and a half before due date which was a month before he was born.

MaidenMotherCrone · 04/06/2019 17:11

I had been making a layette, bedding etc for a good while before I was actually pregnant. I also bought tons of lovely basic clothing when a local department closed down.

If anyone remembers the term 'bottom drawer' that's what I had..... a baby bottom drawer.

Heyha · 04/06/2019 17:20

After 12 week scan as it was black Friday and the next to me cot was on offer! Really glad we bought bits as we've gone along, it's been nice to focus on a particular thing each month and if I'd saved the money up and done it in one go towards the end I'd have missed loads of bargains, January sales was another big plus! Plus I can't really be arsed now at 37 weeks 😂

CassianAndor · 04/06/2019 17:21

6 months. I thought any earlier would jinx it.

Megan2018 · 04/06/2019 17:23

We waited until after 20 wk scan, with the exception of a bargain bedside crib that was for sale in our village - so snapped that up and then hid it.

fonxey · 04/06/2019 17:47

I've bought one thing because it was cute, half price and I couldn't say no. Actually bought 2 cuddly toys as well probably more due me though, hehe.

The one thing is some dungarees but they are for a 6month old.

Bettyhop · 04/06/2019 17:50

The first thing I bought was a book called when the world was waiting for you after my 12 week scan. It's a lovely keepsake. Congratulations x

FenellaMaxwell · 04/06/2019 17:53

We bought one soft toy when we decided to try for a baby, and one sleepsuit after the 12 week scan, but waited until 20 weeks for everything else.

nespressowoo · 04/06/2019 18:51

I bought a babygrow after my 12 weeks scan 😁

sweetsaltypopcorn · 04/06/2019 19:00

I don't believe in jinxes.
I bought some bibs and cute unisex outfits around 8 weeks.

lucieex1 · 04/06/2019 19:33

I first brought a cute little outfit for bubba couple of weeks after my 21 week scan tbh go for it I honestly wanted to buy everything soon as I found out I was pregnant 😂 xx

AndBeholdAWhiteHorse · 04/06/2019 19:39

Thanks for everyone's replies. It has made me feel a lot better. I have bought a lovely white rabbit rattle today. Only small and fits in my drawer nicely so I see it every day. I also allowed myself into Mothercare to look at practical items (prams and car seat etc). For those wondering but a little scared to ask maybe; Mothercare will accept refunds on items not wanted without questions asked if it is still boxed and you have the receipt. Whilst I'm not superstition per se I am nervous and practical. I hope I haven't offended anyone but I thought it was good to know.

That is really helpful to know @AndBeholdAWhiteHorse

happymummy12345 · 04/06/2019 20:09

Not until as late as possible. Even then I'm superstitious and had nothing in the house until after the baby was born. Except what we needed for hospital, which was the bare minimum anyway.

newmum120 · 04/06/2019 20:21

I decided to buy an outfit or two after my 12 week scan and me and my husband got so carried away we finished the nursery at around 18weeks haha we were just too excited with our first baby we couldn't stop! I'm 33 weeks now and I'm glad I enjoyed myself maybe don't go as crazy as we did though lol

Moses92 · 04/06/2019 20:28

I was about 9 weeks, we were in New York and bought a lovely sleepsuit from Macys as we wanted to get something from the USA for baby! Started buying things pretty much as and when I saw something I liked... I am 36 weeks now.
