Heartburn = hairy baby? Just for fun

So i had to take gaviscon for most of my first pregnancy and my baby was born with lots of spiky dark hair.

This time I am having to take loads more gaviscon and the baby's hair has been noticed on 33 and 36 week scans. I am so excited to see how much hair she has.

I know it's supposed to be an old wives tale, but has anyone else noticed a correlation?

Three babies, two with loads of hair, one with none. No heartburn ever, thankfully.

HepzibahHumbug · 09/05/2019 10:36

Oh go on then 😁i had terrible heartburn and dd born with masses of dark hair

kee80 · 09/05/2019 10:38

I had terrible heartburn with both mine. One was born no hair the other had quite a bit

bigKiteFlying · 09/05/2019 10:39

I heard that with thrid pg - never heard it before - all my pg I had really bad heart burn all had lots of hair.

Apparently there may be something to it:

www.nytimes.com/2007/02/20/health/20really.html
In December, researchers at Johns Hopkins University conducted a study intending to put the claim to rest. To their surprise, they ended up confirming it.
...

Other studies have shown that in pregnant women, high levels of estrogen and other hormones can relax the sphincter at the bottom of the esophagus, causing heartburn. The same hormones, other studies show, can influence fetal hair growth.

Preg 1 = rotten heart burn, not a particularly hairy baby
Preg 2 = mild heart burn, VERY hairy baby (and still is a very hairy 10 year old!)

DuggeesWoggle · 09/05/2019 10:44

DS - terrible heartburn, not particularly hairy.

Now 22 weeks with DD, heartburn kicking in again. We shall see!

I think I just have a short torso so everything gets very squashed up (when I bend over I can almost feel my stomach getting pushed up to my chest!). Plus the relaxin makes your stomach valves looser.

Teddybear45 · 09/05/2019 10:44

Nearly all the Indian babies I see are hairy. Strangely enough none of them experienced heartburn despite eating spicy food. Heartburn’s one of those things that is influenced by a lot of things other than hormones - eg weight gain, how you carry your baby, intolerances, pre-existing conditions etc.

fleshmarketclose · 09/05/2019 10:48

No heartburn here, babies had little hair. My dsis had terrible heartburn for two of hers who were born with a full head of hair and no heartburn for the two that didn't. Dd is due soon, has terrible heartburn we eagerly wait and see whether baby has hair.

RChick · 09/05/2019 10:49

I'm prepared to accept it's nothing more than an old wives tale, although the article is interesting.

It does make the heartburn less annoying if I believe it is there for a reason though.

With ds, I had zero heartburn throughout and he was a very hairy baby Smile
Expecting no. 2 now, also a boy and have had loads of heartburn so will be interesting to see Hmm

Knittedfairies · 09/05/2019 12:57

Daughter - terrible heartburn; lots of dark spiky hair. The midwife said she looked like a 'lavatory brush'.
Son - not much heartburn, lots of dark spiky hair. Different midwife who didn't comment.

Kylieemilyj · 09/05/2019 13:00

Ive been having heartburn loads during pregnancy, according to scans he has lots of hair too! yet to meet the little monkey though to see just how much.

EyeDrops · 09/05/2019 13:01

Bad heartburn in both my pregnancies, and both babies born with full heads of dark hair!

kgeal3 · 09/05/2019 16:26

Three babies, heart burn from early on. I'm on baby 4 and heartburn has kicked in from 15 weeks! All of mine were baldies!! Big bald heads 😂 my third was a girl and had literally no hair until she was at least 2.5!

Baloonphobia · 09/05/2019 16:28

Ridiculous heartburn with both. Prescription meds for it, reflux causing sore throat etc. DD not hairy at all. Expecting to meet dd2 on wed. No hairiness mentioned in scans. I think it's a no from me on the correlation.

Lllot5 · 09/05/2019 16:31

I had the most awful heartburn with my third. Felt like anything I ate or drunk would set me off.
My ds was a bald as a coot no hair until he was about two.

tanqueray10 · 09/05/2019 16:33

Two babies- horrific heartburn, both born with a full head of beautiful dark hair!!

EverythingNow · 09/05/2019 16:33

Horrific heartburn for all 3 dds. From very early on until birth, dd3 I was vomiting every day because of it.

All 3 totally bald, and still had fine baby hair at 2.

Currently expecting ds1. Heartburn has been minimal - maybe he will have lots of hair?

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 09/05/2019 16:33

DC1- heartburn from 25 weeks ish, ramped up at 36 weeks. DD came out with lovely chocolate coloured waves.

DC2- terrible heartburn from 16 weeks which needed prescribed ranitidine. DS came out peach fuzz (ie bald).

Thinking about it, I see more hairy baby girls than boys!

BelulahBlanca · 09/05/2019 16:35

Not one incident of heartburn! She’s hairy all over!

PiggyPlumPie · 09/05/2019 16:36

3 out of 3 - wicked heartburn and hairy baby each time!

RChick · 09/05/2019 16:41

Oh BelulahBlanca, what gorgeous hair!

incogneto · 09/05/2019 16:42

Yep terrible heartburn and DS has plenty of hair

Spaghettio · 09/05/2019 16:45

Horrible horrible heartburn with two pregnancies. Carrying gaviscon with me at all times, downing it from the bottle, drinking milk like it was water etc etc.

2 very very bald babies who didn't properly grow hair until they were 18months old.

Normandy144 · 09/05/2019 16:48

No heartburn at all for me and both mine had full on dark hair pixie cuts from birth!
