Bad diet during first 12 weeks

Hi all,

I am 7 weeks + 3 and my nausea is in full swing. I haven't been sick but feel constantly nauseous throughout the day. The only food I can stomach eating is so unhealthy! I crave McD's burgers, pretty much anything with melted cheese and salty foods. Prior to falling pregnant my diet was impeccable, loads of veg and fresh home cooked food. I feel so guilty eating badly during this time, can't help beating myself up about it. I tried to eat some broccoli with my meal the other day and couldn't make myself finish it!

Has anyone else found the same aversion to fruit and veg? Might it stop in 2nd trimester?

TIA Smile

Don't worry. The baby behaves like a parasite and will take what it needs from your stores. Personally keeping anything down is more of a priority in the first trimester when morning sickness is likely

Teddybear45 · 01/05/2019 13:01

I have a theory that the better you eat prior to pregnancy the worse your diet becomes in the first trimester. I was so healthy - eating chicken, veg, and then about 4 weeks I started hating the stuff I quite happily ate before. The one good thing about this is that as you ate well in the run up to pregnancy you will probably have covered the folate requirement for the first three weeks.

Bambamber · 01/05/2019 13:03

Totally agree with gamerchick. Eat what you can for now, and when the sickness subsides (fingers crossed it does) work on getting back on track with your eating.

In my first pregnancy my aversions didn't stop the whole way through and struggled to eat certain vegetables since. The same ones are out of bounds this time but thankfully I can still eat certain ones when prepared a certain way.

I'm 16 weeks and have only been able to eat fruit and veg for the past couple of weeks instead of the beige only diet of the first trimester! In fact I think I'm craving it as all I want to eat is salads and veg. Odd thing is I weighed the same at my 13 week scan as I did at booking in yet I seem to have gained 4lbs in the last couple of weeks of healthiness 🤔

Nervousdave · 01/05/2019 16:34

@HannahBee your post could have been written by me, I'm having the exact same issues! All I can eat without increasing nausea is cheese, chips and bread, with crackers as snacks. Hating the beige diet, also tried to eat broccoli (which I LOVE)but couldn't force it down! I did make enchiladas this week stuffed with veg and chicken, but the cheesy wrapness really helped me to eat them 🙈
I'm hoping this constant surfing of the nausea wave stops soon and then I can start blooming 😂

Nervousdave · 01/05/2019 16:34

(I'm 7+4!!)

undomesticgodde55 · 01/05/2019 16:50

I hear you! 8 weeks today and I'm struggling with eating right! I feel like I'm overloading the baby with saturated fat all the time. I've started eating natural yoghurt (with a dollop of Nutella) in the morning which is helping with nausea as well so I know I have protein. In the evening my partner is cooking which helps as he's packing it with veg, so like a lasagna or other pasta dish with veg mixed in the sauce. Not as healthy but at least it's something. During the day I'm eating all sorts of crap like crisps, sweets, ginger biscuits just to keep the nausea at bay. I hate that I'm eating so much it can't be good for the baby

FlorenceAlice · 01/05/2019 16:50

Yes! I am feeling the exact same beige guilt. I was very healthy before pregnancy... I’m now 8 weeks and I’m living on pasta and cheese and takeaways. Really hoping I can go back to looking after myself in the second trimester!!

Newyearsameoldshit · 01/05/2019 17:32

You and baby will be fine!
All that good eating before pregnancy will hopefully mean your stores are well stocked and your body is not deficient in anything.
Baby will take what it needs and chances are you'll come back to all the fruit and veg in the 2nd tri.
Just eat what you can keep down for now!

DeadDoorpost · 01/05/2019 17:35

Hyperemesis gave me a majorly bad diet in my first pregnancy and DS turned out fine. Healthy weight of 7lbs 13 oz at 9 days overdue. You'll be fine.

As it is, this pregnancy I can stomach potatoes but most other veg (and some fruits) make me really sick. Again, Hyperemesis... I'm genuinely looking forward to eating veg without gagging

coffeeaddiction · 01/05/2019 17:37

You sound very similar to how I was , my diet got better around 15/16 weeks but got terrible again at 33 weekish ( think I craved sugar for energy )

SnakesBarmitzvah · 01/05/2019 18:00

I was exactly the same. Don’t worry, you can make it up when you’re in the 2nd trimester & don’t feel as rough.

I found I began to like and crave the foods in my pre-pregnancy diet again once I was 15/16 weeks. I was finally done with the crap and fancied my normal balanced meals again.

Just try to eat anything healthy you can during your 1st trimester, amongst the junk. I managed oranges and grapes, but the rest was bread, chips, crisps etc.

Don’t beat yourself up - as I said you can make it up when you don’t feel so crap!

NameChangedNoImagination · 01/05/2019 18:05

I was the same. 100% clean eating vegan before pregnancy. The moment I got pregnant it was chocolate and crisps and pizza every day. The moment I touched a vegetable I vomited.

Lhmm · 01/05/2019 18:07

Hey!!
I'm currently 8+2 and I've ate nothing but rubbish and I eat polos all day Long I'm suffering with sickness really bad !! From moment I open my eyes till I go to bed I'm sick and have nausea it's absolutely horrible I also have two other children I literally have to keep thinking of every food in my head to see if I stop at one and think yeah okay I fancy that I've been Drs they have gave me 3 different kinds of anti sickness medication I've been trying it for three weeks nothing puts this a bay !! I'm struggling real bad I've only ate McDonald's kfc chip shop just total shit and only ate half or just some then I'm sick !! This is not fun at all 😩

whereonearth · 01/05/2019 18:15

It’s normal. Don’t worry! Baby takes what it needs. Get the book ‘expecting better’ by emily oster.

abcriskringle · 01/05/2019 18:44

Yep! I'm coming out the other side of this now at 15 weeks! Can finally eat fruit and veg again although some things are still iffy (some meat, weirdly pasta turns my stomach and I'm not fully back on board with dairy). I've basically been living on toast and crisps until this week so pleased it's finally easing.

ELM8 · 01/05/2019 18:53

So glad to have found this post.. I am EXACTLY the same. 9+1 and the last 5 weeks the amount of pizza / chips/ toast/ crisps/ chocolate etc is disgusting. Used to LOVE salad/veg before but I can't stomach it now. Hoping previous healthy diet means baby is getting what it needs and I'll be able to go back to that soon.

Don't have any advice for you as such, sorry! Hopefully as others have said this will go in a few weeks. I have found I can eat vegetable soup as long as I have about half a baguette with it so maybe try that?

I'm going to steal the tip of hiding veg in with pasta - great idea!!

ForTheLoveOfDoughnuts · 01/05/2019 18:55

I had horrible nausea and sickness full 12 weeks. Only thing I could keep down was white bread and sometimes chips.

Once I hit 12 weeks, the sickness went and I've been eating normally. I'm now 30 weeks and finding I'm eating little and often

russiandwarf · 01/05/2019 19:25

So glad I found this thread! I've been eating mostly beige, salty or chocolate but now almost 18 weeks and managing to get some fruit in. Veg still makes my stomach turn though 🤢 As a result have gained 1 and a half stone though and feel guilty and disgusted with myself. I'm pretty happy to hear I'm not alone in struggling with this!

Triskaidekaphilia · 01/05/2019 19:48

All I could manage was carbs and dairy once MS kicked in, I could stomach fruit by the end of the first trimester but not veg or meat, especially chicken. I had been eating a mostly healthy, high protein diet while ttc and couldn't eat a lot of my pre-prepped meals. It has been slow but my aversions have got a lot better bit by bit during second trimester. I can still only manage meat if processed, can't stomach the thought of a chicken breast or steak or anything! And some stronger tasting veggies like broccoli (usually my favourite) and cauliflower still turn my stomach. But I can manage some nice fresh leafy veg. I have gained a bit too much weight as the carbs and cheese (and now ice cream) are still what I crave most!

eightoclock · 01/05/2019 21:44

It got much better for me at around 20 weeks. Ate nothing but crisps and coke to start with. Now at 26 weeks I'm back to my normal healthyish diet (haven't had a coke for weeks!) and weirdly my appetite has decreased back to normal as well.

Olivebrach · 02/05/2019 13:57

Hey im exactly the same atm. I just want unhealthy stuff. Not anything sugary though and i usually have a proper sweet tooth. Its kinda annoyin, i still have 2 easter eggs i havent touched and i LOVE chocolate lol.

I remember from last time it does get better. Once the nausea goes my healthy appitite returned. However i still wanted unhealthu stuff lol.

Im also gettin married in 2 weeks and i know im gunna have awful skin for the day cause im just eatin a load of crap ( i know it doesnt matter its about the ceremony ect lol but still)

FirsttimemumLaura · 02/05/2019 17:05

I’m exactly the same!! 9 weeks and all I can stomach is toast, crisps, cheese - anything full of carbs or salt! There must be a reason ... for now I’m just telling my husband it must be what the baby needs 😉 I have bad nausea all day, feel lethargic but haven’t actually been sick thankfully. I have also found I can’t look at pictures or watch anything about food on tv - it makes me want to hurl!! Anyone found anything that helps with nausea? I tried the bands but they didn’t work.

gluteustothemaximus · 02/05/2019 18:54

Give the baby a Happy Meal. It's what the baby wants.

Greyponcho · 02/05/2019 19:15

Oh, TFFT! I’m the same - eating breadsticks, spaghetti bolognese, fruity yoghurt and cheesy bread between sugary drinks. Veg is a no-go. I do have apples when I can but fruit makes my stomach feel very acidic and therefore nauseous.
I bloat with dairy so look like I’m 5 months (only 13 weeks Blush )
Water tastes disgusting too 🤢
