What eye colour will my baby have?

I know there’s no exact way to know until their at least 9 months, but I’m curious and have been trying to research but haven’t found a conclusive answer as both mine & DH’s eye colours are recessive (I think)

Mine are green and DH’s are blue/grey.

Any guesses?

Mine and my partners eyes are brown our daughters eyes are Green Grin

Heyha · 30/03/2019 22:05

The confusion comes in when people use descriptive terms (eg hazel) rather than the genes of brown/blue/green. There is more to it than that but basically although I have brown eyes and brown is dominant so will show through, I know I only have one copy of the brown gene, from my mum, as my dad has green eyes. So I will have a hidden copy of either the blue or green gene. My DP has blue eyes so has two copies of blue gene.
When mixed up, if our child gets my brown gene then it will have brown eyes no matter what. If it gets my other gene instead, it will have green eyes if my hidden one is for green, or blue eyes if my hidden one is for blue.

So brown eyes always have to come directly from a parent as the gene can't be hidden away but blue or green can pop up unexpectedly as they can be hidden behind brown eyes.

Heyha · 30/03/2019 22:06

Yes @bikerunski same here in my family, the brown eyed parent can have a green eye been as the second one and if that gets passed on it will be shown rather than the blue eye from the other parent. Shame really as it's a nice chart otherwise!

BentNeckLady · 30/03/2019 22:15

Eyes can change colour too. My dd had bright blue eyes as a baby. She’s a teenager now and they're green!

Me dark brown
Dh blue
Dd blue green
Ds dark brown

Polly99 · 30/03/2019 22:16

What are hazel eyes? Are they brown or green?

Presumably grey eyes are a variant of blue?

I don’t think that chart quite works. DM has brown eyes, and DF blue (very bright unambiguous blue) and my eyes are green (0% chance according to that chart). I’d say perhaps DM has some explaining to do, but I look just like my DF!!

Heyha · 30/03/2019 22:26

I think hazel are genetically brown (but wouldn't swear to it). Your DM will have given you a green gene that she had hidden behind her dominant brown gene, @polly99 which in turn overuled your DF's blue eye genes, so all good on that one Smile

Polly99 · 30/03/2019 22:29

Possibly, Heyta, although her DFs eyes were also bright blue (and her mother’s brown). When you’d say ‘hidden’ do you mean recessive or is it actually more complex than what they taught at GCSE?

Polly99 · 30/03/2019 22:30

Sorry *heyha (2 glasses of wine and I can no longer read...)!

Heyha · 30/03/2019 22:43

😂 I know what you mean! No for once, as far as I know what's taught at GCSE is about right, brown is dominant so if neither parent has brown eyes there's no way of having a brown-eyed child. Green is recessive to brown but dominant to blue and then blue is recessive to everything. But there are other genes that influence expression of pigment that come into play as well.

No idea on where your DM got her green eye gene from the as she 'should' be heterozygous for brown and blue... maybe somebody more clued up on genetics than me will be able to explain (I went to uni to do biology thinking I'd pick all the genetics units then hated the compulsory one in the first year so switched over the physiology 😂)

Pythonesque · 30/03/2019 22:45

We're similar to you - DH has green eyes, mine are blue/grey albeit with a lot of flecks of colour in them - increasing as I get older I think. One child with blue/grey eyes, now in mid-teens has a few flecks of colour, other has greeny-hazel eyes.

EllieNor · 30/03/2019 22:55

I have hazel eyes, more towards green than brown, dh has the brightest bluest eyes you've ever seen.
Dc1 brown eyes
Dc2 hazel eyes, mostly brown with flecks of green around the iris.

DrWhy · 31/03/2019 02:09

I have grey eyes and DH has green, DS has brown eyes. There’s a really good link on the first page that explains how this can wirk, essentially at least one of us must have the dominant brown eye gene but with the pigment switched off. Could be either or both of us as we both have a brown eyed parent.

Tavannach · 31/03/2019 02:29

How can two blue eyed parents have a brown eyed child?

For instance if one of the grandparents has brown eyes their child will be carrying the gene and can pass it on

DramaAlpaca · 31/03/2019 02:50

I have browny green eyes but as all my grandparents had blue eyes I knew I must carry the recessive gene for blue eyes. DH has greeny brown eyes & lots of blue eyed relatives so probably also has the recessive gene for blue eyes. Of our three DC, two have blue/grey eyes & one has an interesting mixture of brown & blue with flecks of yellow. So that gene for blue eyes skipped a generation & came out in our DC. I find eye colour absolutely fascinating.

Hollyhobbi · 31/03/2019 03:05

I have green eyes, ex husband has blue eyes. One of our dds has lighter green eyes than me and the other Dd has bright blue eyes. My dad has red hair and blue eyes and my mum has black hair and green eyes.

silvertongue · 31/03/2019 06:08

Eye colour is more complicated than they teach at GCSE. There are at least 8 genes that code for it and interact. There also aren't discrete colours like a "green eye gene" it's a spectrum of how much melanin you have - blue is a lack of melanin, green has a little bit, brown has a lot. A lot of the time, eye colour inheritance does follow the simplified version but it doesn't have to and it's perfectly possible for two brown eyed people to have a blue eyed child.

silvertongue · 31/03/2019 06:10

Ugh, I mean perfectly possible for two blue eyed parents to have a child with brown eyes.

Aus84 · 31/03/2019 06:38

I have green, my DH has blue/grey and my three children have various shades of blue and blue/grey.

Jellycat1 · 31/03/2019 07:03

DH and I both have brown eyes (DH very dark brown, mine lighter but still definitely brown). Our DS who is 2, has blue/grey eyes, were not sure he’s ours (I’m joking!).
We guess it’s from either his maternal grandfather or paternal grandmother who both have blue eyes.

Ditto @ChocolateChipMuffin2016 ! Well almost.

Me brown. DH light brown. Both dark hair. My dad blue. DH mum blue. My sister and niece blue. DH sister green.

Two sons - one blonde and blue eyes and one dark hair and dark brown eyes! Go figure Smile

Jellycat1 · 31/03/2019 07:04

Sorry the top of my post should have been in bold as am quoting @ChocolateChipMuffin2016 !

Katyy · 31/03/2019 07:09

Both blue eyes. One son blue, other Hazel .

ThanksItHasPockets · 31/03/2019 09:17

I was under the impression that the majority of Caucasian babies were born with blue eyes, which often later change? DD was born with blue eyes which had turned brown by10 months, so she now has the unusual combination of blonde hair and brown eyes. DS’s eyes have stayed blue.

HoppingPavlova · 31/03/2019 10:16

So brown eyes always have to come directly from a parent as the gene can't be hidden away but blue or green can pop up unexpectedly as they can be hidden behind brown eyes.

And yet I have a brown eyed child when neither DH nor myself have brown eyes (blue and green respectively). As indicated earlier up thread there have only ever been blue eyed grandparents for at least 3 generations back on both sides. So no idea where my green eyes came from .....
Child is definitely ours, I didn’t have an affair and no hospital mix up as we have all had genetic testing due to other issues.

Heyha · 31/03/2019 14:56

@hoppingpavlova ignore me it looks like there are a certain combo of various genes that can lead to 'random' brown eyes...I stand corrected and I also stand by my statement that I hated genetics 😂
