What eye colour will my baby have?

I know there’s no exact way to know until their at least 9 months, but I’m curious and have been trying to research but haven’t found a conclusive answer as both mine & DH’s eye colours are recessive (I think)

Mine are green and DH’s are blue/grey.

Any guesses?

I have blue eyes and DH has brown eyes. We have one blue eyed child and one brown eyed child. My parents both have brown eyes, but mine are blue. My DH has a brown eyed and a green eyed parent. Eye colour genetics is actually really complex. You will just have to wait and see! With both mine their eye colour was apparent by about two months old.

heidiwine · 30/03/2019 08:51

You could be my parents. They had three children. All with different colours - very deep brown, very deep blue and definitely green (not hazel or grey).
So I just don’t think you can predict it.

YouBumder · 30/03/2019 08:52

My partner has brown eyes and hair. Our baby is only two weeks old so her eyes are the typical newborn slate grey right now. Curious to see what colour they'll turn out!

This was like us, first baby ended up with brown eyes and second one has blue eyes. The eldest’s eyes were that really dark blue before turning brown but the youngest’s were always much brighter blue.

Me and my ex both have brown eyes. DS1 has brown eyes. So we were surprised when DS2 had blue eyes with a golden ring round his pupil. We've had a few snidey comments over the years about 'I thought brown eyes were dominant?' and had to explain its more complex than that. There is a blue eyed grandparent on both sides, so my ex and I clearly inherited a blue and a brown gene each (hence we have brown eyes) and we've both passed on our blue genes to DS2. And DS1 has either a brown gene from each of us or a brown and a blue, hence his brown eyes. And I know its even more complex than that.

@MintyT your children sound beautiful!

I’m not pregnant yet, but curious as to what colour mine and DP’s baby’s eyes would be, given the strange circumstances on his side.

I have blue eyes, and come from a family of blue eyes. DP has blue eyes, however both of his parents and his siblings have brown eyes. His paternal grandfather is the only direct relative who has blue eyes. Does this pose the possibility of our baby having brown eyes? Would be very interesting if it did!

FineFanks · 30/03/2019 09:20

@ree348 Thank you! That’s helpful! Similar to what I have found online, 50/50 chance of green or blue but I still understand Blue to be dominant to green.

Tbf I love green or blue. Both of us are dark hair, dark skin so I think either would be lovely. Kinda hope at least 1 of my DC get my green eyes though!

@UnPocoLoco2 not worried at all! Just curious especially as I can’t find a conclusive answer. I know green and blue are recessive to brown, but can’t find which is the dominant out of the 2. Google and many responses here indicate 50/50 chance of either. So will just have to wait and see. Apparently you don’t know until they’re 1, and could even change after that.

How can two blue eyed parents have a brown eyed child?Hmm

b0bb1n · 30/03/2019 11:00

My parents have hazel eyes and out of their four kids one has very dark brown eyes, one lighter brown, one blue eyes with yellow specks, and on blue grey eyes.

I can't wait to find out what colour eyes my son will have. Me and DH have blue grey eyes.

Errrrm,easily Grin

anniehm · 30/03/2019 11:25

If you both have blue or green eyes then your kids eyes will be blue or green (unless adopted, sperm donor etc) genetics 101

Chocolateisfab · 30/03/2019 11:29

I had 8 dc with blue eyes. Add in a brown eyed df and wow was I shocked that I had a dc with brown eyes!! Seriously took some getting used to!!
Now have 2 brown eyed ds's and a dd.

elliejjtiny · 30/03/2019 11:29

Me and dh have the same colour eyes as you and yours. We have 5 dc, 3 have blue eyes, one green and one grey.

YouBumder · 30/03/2019 11:52

Have I misread your post chocolate or do you have 11 kids?

YouBumder · 30/03/2019 11:52

(Not that there’s anything wrong with that of course, just curious. And a bit in awe!)

ijustdontunderstandher · 30/03/2019 11:52

We have a right weird lot,

DH-Light/medium brown hair, blue/green eyes
Me-Dark brown hair, blue/grey eyes
DS1-Born with really dark hair, then went very blonde, now a light mousy brown, Blue/grey eyes
DTwins-Born with light hair, then went very blonde, now light brown hair, bright blue eyes
DS4-Born with really dark hair, is now going mousy brown and looks like he will be having the blonde phase like his brothers, blue/grey eyes.

Never once did I dream I’d have a blonde kid

YouBumder · 30/03/2019 11:54

Yeah me and my husband have dark hair as does our eldest but youngest is blond!

Tobebythesea · 30/03/2019 11:54

I’m not sure how it works but I have red (straight) hair with green eyes, my DH has brown (straight) hair and green eyes. We have a blonde curly haired, blue eyed girl (who isn’t the milkman’s!). We were both blonde as children though.

snop · 30/03/2019 11:56

Mine are brown dh are blue
Dc1 has blue and dc2 has green

bananasandwicheseveryday · 30/03/2019 12:22

My dad - blue/grey eyes
My mum - chocolate brown

Me and sibling - deep, deep green with a tiny ring of brown around the pupil.

Dh parents c both deep blue eyes
Dh and siblings all have deep blue eyes.

Our Dcs - one has exactly the same colour as me and one has deep blue eyes , the same as Dh.

Interestingly, my maternal grandparents had the same combo action of colours as my parents. Two of their children have deep brown eyes and one, though not my mum, has the same colour as me and my sibling.

RebeccaWrongDaily · 30/03/2019 12:30

I have blue blue eyes
DH has brown eyes
DC1 has blue eyes
DC2 has grey / hazel eyes
DC3 has truly green eyes.

Which according the chart up there is 0% possible. DH is definitely the father

BikeRunSki · 30/03/2019 12:42

The chart that @ree348 posted says that a blue eyed parent and a brown eyed parent can’t have a green eyed child. Except DH and I did. My brother has green eyes though, I presume that has something to do with it.
