LOVABUMP · 10/07/2007 14:14

I HAVE JUST BEEN FOR MY 22 WEEK CHECK UP WITH MIDWIFE AND AM APPARENTLY MEASURING 4CM BIGGER THAN I SHOULD BE. WHERE I LIVE YOU ONLY GET ROUTINE 14 WEEK SCAN AND NO 20 WEEK ONE. I DID HAVE A CYST ON MY RIGHT OVARY AT 14 WEEKS BUT AS IT WAS UNDER 3CM WAS TOLD THEY WOULDN'T WORRY ABOUT IT, MIDWIFE I SAW TODAY, FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS PG, WAS ONE I SAW THROUGHOUT PG WITH MY DS AND SHE IS VERY GOOD, I TRUST HER COMPLETELY. I AM STILL BEING QUITE SICK SO A BIT CONFUSED BY ALL THIS. NO SUGAR IN URINE SO DON'T THINK DIABETES COMES INTO IT, AM I JUST HAVING A BIG BABY? I'M THINKING OUCH!!! HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS? WEE BIT WORRIED IT COULD HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH CYST. ALSO DIDN'T HAVE BLOODS DONE FOR DOWNS ETC, COULD THERE BE A PROB THERE? FEEL GUILTY MOANING AS LOADS OF PEOPLE HAVE MUCH BIGGER PROBS THAN ME.

Hello. You might be having a big baby there, but as you have many weeks ahead of you things can even out again. Mine all measured 6 weeks ahead of dates (and of course even more with the twins..lol) and they vaired between 8lb 5 and 10lb.

I think it's quite common, i have seen other posts on here about it too.

Good Luck!

Nbg · 10/07/2007 14:24

I think theres alot to be said about measurements in pregnancy.

I measured 4 weeks ahead and tbh I think everyone I've known whos been pg have measured incorrectly for dates, so it just shows really.

FWIW, my last baby was only 8lb 7oz so not exactly big.

nomdeplume · 10/07/2007 14:26

I agree re measurements not really being a cast iron indication of a baby.

BTW - Turn your caps off, it looks like you are shouting and makes your posts difficult to read.

nomdeplume · 10/07/2007 14:26

of a BIG baby. Duh

NAB3 · 10/07/2007 14:26

May be fluid? Have you been checked for polyhydromnius?

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 10/07/2007 14:27

please turn your caps lock off! it looks like you are shouting!

i was supposed to ber having the most enormous baby in the world ever-had lots of sucking in of teeth and 'oooh this is a big one' every time i saw a midwife or doctor. he was just an average 8lber in the end.

i would just see how it goes, and maybe ask for another scan if you are still worried about in a couple of weeks.

tomme · 10/07/2007 14:32

I was convinved I was having a big baby but kept being told it was small for dates etc (I was huge) and my DS was 9lb 14.5oz. I don't think that measurements are that great to be honest.

DollyPopsOut · 10/07/2007 14:41

I measured big for dates with both my pgs. First one was a big one, born at 42w weighing 9lb 13. Second one born at 39 w weighing 8lb 8. So on the large side but not enormous. I did have polyhydramnios with both girls though so it's worth asking the MW to refer you for a scan at about 32 weeks to see what your pools are like.

Good luck

LOVABUMP · 10/07/2007 14:41

Not so worried now, thanks, sorry about caps! Not going to think about it I mean what's normal?! Havn't been tested for anything, was just picked up this morning, got to go back in two weeks and get checked again, maybe just a growth spurt, fingers crossed

i was told at my 27 wk check that i was measuring as 32 wks. i am going back on fri (29 wks) to be rechecked. when i have measured myself at home i come out spot on what i should be!
my last midwife never measured me at all she just always said......"you wont be having a huge baby, feels quite small to me".............and she was right!

cupcake78 · 10/07/2007 14:50

Everything they have said to me so far they have got wrong.

One minute my baby is going to be small, then he is too big, now he is fine but I am measuring too big.

I have decided that as there is nothing I can do personally to change it then I am trying not to think about it too much.

bambi06 · 10/07/2007 14:53

i measured big fo rmy first son.they said 9.5-10 pounds..he was 3 weeks late and 8.13lbs...with my third[boy] im measuring two weeks bigger each time and have told me again hes going to be a big baby..again..needless to say i`m taking it with a pinch of salt and will wait and see..my bump isnt that big considering!!

theressomethingaboutmarie · 10/07/2007 15:29

With my first scan I measured "big" according to the sonographer. I mentioned it to my midwife recently and she said to ignore it, that they were talking mere milimeters which means zilch.

diddle · 10/07/2007 15:33

I wouldn't rely on measurements either, my baby measured big all the way through and was just under 9lb born and that was 2 weeks late. i don't think its very reliable.

MuffinMclay · 10/07/2007 19:07

I wouldn't take the measurements too seriously at all. With ds I was told all the way through the pregnancy that he was a big baby. He was 6lb 10 oz.

Hard not to worry though, isn't it.

muppetgirl · 10/07/2007 19:15

I'm measuring big for dates -at least 2 weeks, could be 3+6 days.

Sonographer took actual measurements. Midwife had a quick feel and said 'I don't think it's a big baby.'

My 1st was 9lb 1oz so was a little concerened when I heard 2nd's can be bigger!

I am booked for a growth scan at 24 weeks (next week) so I will find out if it was a growth spurt or a big baby for dates. I was also told I could request a scan quite late on in the pregnancy to check measurements to make me feel a little better.

I would remember though, weight and size are 2 different things. (My ds was heavy but thin -long)

muppetgirl · 10/07/2007 19:17

Oh and with ds 1 I was HUGE and everyone commented on it so I kept asking the 'professionals' 'Is this baby big?' to which they all said no!!

So if they say it's big -don't beleive them, it other people say it is, then it probably will be!!!!

flibbertyjibbet · 10/07/2007 19:39

I was huge with ds2, kept being told it was a small baby with head down.
9lb breech ladies.
DS1 I had a measuring scan, they told me he was going to be nearly 10lb. Turned out to be a 7lb10oz very long skinny baby.
I suspect they like to frighten us!
I honestly think attempting to guess the size/weight of a baby still in the womb is just guesswork - if I ever was to have another (NOT!!!!) and anyone tried to measure it I'd just say 'no thanks, lets weigh it when it comes out'.

lizziemun · 10/07/2007 20:30

I measured to size with dd but she was born at 39 weeks and 9lb 4oz. I was told she would be about 7lb

I was told that it was only a concern if the same midwife continious measured big as they all measure different.

Hopeitwontbebig · 11/07/2007 09:48

If it's any help I had two big babies, DS1 10lb 10oz, DS2 10lb 4oz and they were both fairly straight forward deliveries. DS1 was quite tough because he was posterior, but then in that case it doesn't matter what size the baby is. The actual delivery bit wasn't too bad.

Just wanted to give you some reassurance that if your baby is big, it's not the end of the world. I loved my big babies. So much so I'm having another one!!! Got a scan in 3 weeks to see how big this one is!

HIWBB (29+3)

muppetgirl · 11/07/2007 10:18

Just to add big babies can sleep through more quickly! Bigger tummies take more food.

(Not all I realise before anyone tells me off!!)

LOVABUMP · 11/07/2007 11:39

Even worse news! I started bleeding this morning so stress levels through roof! Can't go to hospital until 3pm as first available scan slot thay have, still getting light movements so thats quite comforting. Its going to be a long few hours! Funnily enough not so worried about my big baby now!

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 11/07/2007 12:02

just wanted to add a word of reassurance -i had a small bleed at 32 weeks and a longer 3 day bleed at 36 weeks and bubba was fine.

hope you get some good news today.

muppetgirl · 11/07/2007 12:20

Good luck lovabump, thinking of you. Please let us know how you are

Hopeitwontbebig · 11/07/2007 12:41

Hi Lovabump. I had a slight bleed at 21 wks, again at 22 and again at 24. The midwife said I had a cervical erosion. Apparently it's quite common. I hope that reassures you in someway.

Lots of luck for 3pm
