baby girl due - whopeeeee!

sorry guys, but if i don't tell someone i'll explode! I had my 20 week scan this morning and as it was our 2nd p/g we decided to find out the sex (didn't last time) on the condition that once we knew we would keep it to ourselves!

Well both dh & myself were secretly hoping for a girl although neither of us would admit to it - mainly because we have a son. And it is a little girl. Poor 'scanner' had to deal with me in fits of tears - i just couldn't stop! Now we are so delighted but we can't tell anyone, so i am trying in vain to contain my delight!!

Also, i was amazed at how sophisticated the scans have got - we could see inside the brain, artieries to the heart, blood vessels within the umbilical cord ..... and we had a lovely lady talking us through it (who just made me cry even more!!) so all in all a pretty good morning!

Oh, that scan's so lovely isn't it? Many congratulations. But why aren't you telling anyone? I told everyone that I was expecting a boy, and told them all his name before he was born too. I was so proud and didn't care who knew - they'd fine out soon enough anyway, so I didn't see the point of keeping it a secret.

emilys, how lovely. Our second was a girl, although I didn't want to know until baby was born, and I, too, was thrilled as we already had a boy! Am really pleased for you all

wonderful news emilys, I found out my dd was a girl by accident..a week before the birth but I love surprises so I didn't tell anyone, not even dh (he was desperate for a girl)

Great news, emilys. My no.2 was a dd (we were convinced the baby would be another boy) and it's been (well, is still being) totally fascinating seeing how girls differ from boys.

Dh (who only had a brother) still doesn't have a clue what he's in for in a few years time, though

Emilys - lovely news for you. Not wanting to put a dampner on anything our radiologists always say to parents that the scan is not 100% accurate. I have personally seen the scan findings been proven wrong at delivery. In one instance the mum was very upset to find her girl (pink wardrobe kitted out) was infact a boy!

My scanner drew a luminous green line around ds's genitals on the screen - scrotum & penis! - so I felt pretty sure he WAS a boy. I also remember thinking that there was no privacy anywhere anymore...

We went for a sex scan for my DD. When I was told it was a girl I kept asking how sure she was. She ended up telling me there was a "typical vulva pattern" (never forget her words!) and I went home with lots of pictures of it! R

thanks everybody - still got a big spring in my step! Aloha - don't want to tell anyone because i think it kind of takes away from the excitement at the time. Plus 2 v. close friends are due the same week and for complicated reasons one is desparate for girl .... so i'll shut up for now and hope she has one.

names - top 3 are:- Lola (although dh thnks this makes her sound like a pros!), holly & Millie. Tragically the last 2 now have v. sad stories attached (missing girls) although i know that is probably a bit over-supersticious. Do you think Lola sounds like a whore? I love it. Also like Grace but think she may have too much to live up to!

I like Lola. Had a dream 3 weeks before my daughter was born, after being convinced I was having a boy, that I'd have girl and she'd be caled Lola! Didn't choose that in the end because I heard Madonna called her daughter that (sis will understand!) but do like it.

Emilys, Of the three I personally like the name Holly. I dont feel Lola sounds as your dh says. Grace is a wonderful name. Great for a middle name too. How about "Lola Grace" Isnt picking names fun? Just try not to get in any arguements with dh like I did. Picking names can be a nightmare. Have Fun!

Oh I see. Congratulations anyway. Choose whatever name you both like best - it will become your daughter's name, full stop. BTW I think Lola is a v pretty name, though I think it is about to become v popular so less unusual. Is your dh a Kinks fan by any chance?

emilys - don't worry about connotations of a name: Lola is short for Dolores which means "pains" (very catholic) and Holly and Millie are still nice names. I must say I think I like Grace best of all of them though - your dd is bound to be graceful in some respect even if not physically!

How ready are medical staff at scans to tell you the sex of the baby? Do you have to have a separate scan, or will they let on, and how easy is it to see for yourself anyway? Has anyone asked to be told and been refused?

I think it depends where you are in the country - in London they won't always tell you as a policy, just to avoid any risk of abortion because of the wrong sex. And you can't always tell anyway - if the babe is lying in the wrong place. And I think it is quite hard to tell yourself - I've heard of lots of people convinced they were having a boy, but the relevant part was actually the umbilical cord!

Emilys, congratulations on finding you are having a girl - I had chosen names for baby no2 b4 we found out I was having a boy but had it been another girl our top names were Holly Grace - I also liked Lola but not DH. Keep at your DH as I have done with boys names (and have got my own way) and I am sure you can win him over.

maybe during the throws of labour is a good time to politlely remind DH that maybe he could be symnpathetic to my fave name!

sml - as musica said there are some areas that won't tell you the sex, i think this is a cultural thing - i know they don't do it in multi-cultural areas like Wembley where in some cultures a son may be deemed 'more desirable'. Our radiologost just wanted to be sure it was something we 'both' wanted to know (dh had to do the talking because of my tears!!).

If you don't want to know, the radiologist will quickly skim over that area (after doing the checks) and it would be extremely difficult to see yourself.

Emilys - when are you due? I'm due 29th December, and desperately wanted a girl before I was pg, not so bothered now though - just want a healthy one. My 20 week scan is on Monday and I want to find out what we're having too. We've also chosen Holly for a girl, but had chosen Jade as a middle name - not too sure now though after that dozy bird on BB3 (not that I watched it - just read the headlines!). Can't agree on any boys names though - DH keeps suggesting ridiculous names like Percival...

paula1 - due on 20th dec...... which brilliantly allows me to get out of doing any of the usual christmas duties - including a trip to the in laws!!

Good luck with the scan on monday - the 20 week one is SOOO exciting, also i think knowing the sex helps you to bond a bit more. How are you feeling? I'm trying to figue out when to give up work, with ds i stoppped 3 weeks before, but i have read a few articles recently saying how you should stop around 30/32 weeks so allow muscles to develop properly (which can only be done through resting) and can lead to an easier birth and that it can be harmful to your baby to carry on 'til the late stages. guess it depends what you do - but i'm not a very good 'rester'. Any thoughts anyone?

I only work 2 days a week now, having been made redundant a few months ago. Last time I worked until 36, and then had an elective c section at 38, so felt really cheated! A very big part of me could give up any day now, but I think I will carry on until ds starts school in September, and then see what happens then.

They won't tell you the sex at my hospital in Somerset. Don't really know why, but am quite glad, as I'm sure I would have been tempted to ask otherwise. Maybe they don't tell you because of not being 100% certain??? It can't be a multi-cultural thing as Yeovil is hardly a 'melting pot' town.

I wanted a girl first time and got one, so don't mind whether I have a girl or a boy next

Enid, they won't tell you the sex at my Hospital in Chelmsford Essex either (also not a melting pot!), I'm having my scan privately at the Fetal Medicine Centre in London, and they will tell you if they can see.
