How many pregnancies are too much for your body?

I would like to ask any doctors out there, do you think a womans body will only tolerate a certain number of babies succesfully? For example those women who have, say, 10 children, do their bodies suffer a bit more each time or are we designed to regenerate completely after each pregnancy with no lasting damage? Obviously no two women are the same, but I am asking this as a general question.

Hope this makes sense! I amm finding it difficult to put this into words. It is something I have always wondered.

I read anthropological studies indicate that the average human female would only have 5-6 full-term pregnancies in her life, if she didn't start menstruating until age 17 (the historical norm), stopped conceiving before age 40, heavily breastfed every baby for years each, and didn't have our rich diets and high levels of nutrition.

I thought you were classed as "high risk" automatically from pregnancy 5+. Higher risk of placenta previa especially as previous scarring on uterus makes it more likely placenta will settle low.

There's very high risk of very bad prolapse in later life if you have several very close together, I have an aunt who became disabled with prolapse age ~60 because she had 4 babies in just a few years.

just wondered...why do people say that the duggar family 'scare' them?
Why??
Ironically, the parents of the kids who are in no way cared for, are the ones who scare me.
What about the children, some of whom are still in nappies, who are allowed out to play on the road, in the middle of winter even, with no clothes on, no nappy even most of the time? What about the little kids who go round houses begging for neighbours to feed them as the parents or parent in some cases -as there seems to be loads of kids born where the fathers are absent or unknown even!!
What about the kids whose parents cannot be bothered to wash and dress them adequately, who are sent to school in a hell of a state? I have never known kids from larger families being in such a state. The duggars are famous for being debt free, and live on their own money, however they make their money, whether earned or otherwise, but surely they are in a much better situation than the families we all know of who are surviving on benefit handouts, which is sometimes spent in pubs by the parent/parents? These are the parents who have an 'easy' life - not the duggars - the duggars have built their own home, they are not on benefits, but there are loads of people known to us all, who have their council houses - all rent free, they don't have to worry about paying council tax, rent or very little else, they have free school meals for their kids, along with school uniform grants, and everything else the state seems to dish out to them here in the uk. So why are people so keen to criticise the duggars, when clearly we all see many more problems with many worse family set-ups almost on our own doorsteps? Why? I can't help wondering if its all down to jealousy? Personally I am envious of them, they are such a wonderful family, and as for one who is in contact with them, I have to defend them as I realise they are a great family. Maybe they do not please everyone, but I doubt if any of us will ever come across a 'perfect' family.
AGAIN NOT having a go at anybody, just to clarity that no family are considered 'perfect' not even our own families as much as we'd like it to be that way. Sorry if I've offended anyone, please please believe me, it is not my intention to hurt or offend anybody, DH & I have a large family and have no time or inclination to interfere with anybody, our own little family are our entire world, take care all xxx

RQ
Just a tip here: please try to use paragraphs in your posts.

They're so long and rambling they're hard to read.

The Duggers are fundamentalist FREAKS, that's why they scare me. And everytime I get the slightest bit homesick I think about all those Bible thumpers there and I see sense.

RoseQuartz · 04/07/2007 10:14

so far so good, there are no prolapses known in our family, despite having large families!
Hey, we seem to have forgotten one thing.....we're not gonna live forever no matter what the hell we do and however we live our lives!!!
I intend to have a few more babies, and even if I end up with 'prolapse' and whatever else mother nature throws at me along the pregnancy path, then so be it, somehow no pregnancy can end up with such serious consequences as smoking does, I can confidently say that, as the only members of my family who have died young are the ones who smoked.
What about my close friend, she died at 51, she only had TWO children, had them when she was in her early 20's, never smoked, alcohol never passed her lips, was obsessive about healthy living etc, was not overweight as kept close watch on that, but despite all her efforts at perfect living, she developed breast cancer, so it goes to show........come on girls, let's just live our lives and hope for the best eh? Why waste our precious time on this planet worrying about something that might never happen, take care girls, i wish you all well xx

RoseQuartz · 04/07/2007 10:16

expatinscotland...........its nice to know that you are sooooo perfect.........you must think you are otherwise you wouldn't feel you had the right to judge others....

LaBoheme · 04/07/2007 10:20

one was enough for me - labour (literally) nearly killed me

RoseQuartz · 04/07/2007 10:25

LaBoheme............lol...........I know where you're coming from though, its not nice at all going through labour and giving birth is it? Pure hell tbh, at least you have the common sense not to do it again, I keep going back for more!!!#7 in new yr....oh god I'm dreading all that pain, gonna order ALL the pain relief!!

francagoestohollywood · 04/07/2007 10:26

the duggers! scary...
I think that if I'd started having children in my 20s I'd probably have more. I have 2. I've suffered from terrible backache since my second was six months.

expatinscotland · 04/07/2007 10:27

Yes, it's a good thing to know indeed, RQ.

I love being perfect. Especially here amongst all the pedants. They never let me get out of line.

I was even corrected by a well-known author the other night.

But instead of hitting out at her, I feel honoured.

LOL. I've gone native in so many ways.

And the Duggers. They're FREAKS. FREAKS. FREAKS.

expatinscotland · 04/07/2007 10:27

Hiya, Franca .

francagoestohollywood · 04/07/2007 10:30

. they have weird hairdoes (is that the plural for hairdo?)

expatinscotland · 04/07/2007 10:33

Gawd, yes, franca!

Those bouffant mullets alone are enough to qualify anyone for instant FREAKDOM.

BBBleedingGumsMurphy · 04/07/2007 10:34

the duggars (am with expat on this one - yikes!)

My great grans all had masses of kids - my mum's dad was one of 17, 15 who made it to maturity. My dad's dad was one of 14 who lived to maturity.

The women all died in their 40s, but of heart attacks.

I don't think the heart disease was tied to all their pregnancies, however, because the trend to develop it continues in all their descendants, both male and female.

suzywong · 04/07/2007 10:41

The Duggars have a child named jinger

Surely that is a criminal offense or a minor felony at the very least

expatinscotland · 04/07/2007 10:42

The Duggars are just fucking embarrassing.

They really are.

MerlinsBeard · 04/07/2007 10:50

rose quartz, expat is right. i havenl;t even read your posts as they are too long. paragraphs would make it easier to read even if, like me, you insert them wherever you like

I disagree with the way the Duggars are brought up. In my eyes a child should have the chance to be a child, that means not being a buddy for a sibling, not sewing their own clothes, not building houses. they should be climbing trees and playing outside and having no responsibilities.

but then, thats my opinion of course.

don't their children all have the same initials as well? that must get confusing when the mail arrives!!

LaBoheme · 04/07/2007 10:51

RQ I wish I had the guts to go through it again good on you! I am a bit of a delicate flower and I am sure the next would tip me over the edge, it was being brought back to the land of the living with adrenaline that freaked me out.

ghosty · 04/07/2007 10:52

Just looked at that Duggars site. The dad is called Jim Bob.
ohhahahahhahahhahahaha

RoseQuartz · 04/07/2007 10:52

i'm sure the duggars are not as embarrassing as the common, ill-raised people who think nothing of using the 'f' word. Sorry you aren't able to think of any better words.
The strangest thing of all is the fact that you use such filthy language to discuss people you don't even know!
So what's your family like then, oh god please don't tell me, I don't want to know.
.....obviously not very well raised.
I feel so sorry for you, and moreso for your poor kids!!

frapachino · 04/07/2007 10:54

One! My left tit is now at least a size bigger than my right and my fanjo is touching my ankles

slug · 04/07/2007 10:54

My mum had about 16-17 pregnancies (she's not sure any more) including one twin pregnancy where she miscarried one but carried the other to full term. She's had 13 live births. She's in pretty good nick for a woman in her 70's having just been seen trotting half way around the world to go to a wedding.

Mind you she's nt that sharp any more, family anecdotes get assigned to a different child every time. But to tell the truth I can't ever remember her beign able to keep on top of all our comings and goings.

speedymama · 04/07/2007 10:56

Just read that link. The father is called Jim Bob.

Are they Mormons?

RGPargy · 04/07/2007 10:57

Why do all their kids' names begin with a "J"???
