Constant pain under right rib cage and in right sholder blade, anyone else have this?????

I'm 34 weeks and suffering, I have 24 hour a day pain just under right ribs,(it is even sore to touch there) and then also in my back, but just right sholder blade. I'm thinking it is just the baby BUT wouldn't it move it's feet or whatever away occasionally???? I think this is common, Is it????

Any suggestions please

I had this and it was gallstones, go to the gp and ask about gallstones.

and have you discussed this with your mw or gp?

Ds was breech and couldn't turn as he has his cord wrapped round his neck. His head was pretty much in the same place for the last 13 weeks of pg -ouch, my ribs hurt so much!!

Bless you Uki, sorry you're suffering . I wish I had something constructive to suggest but all I can think to say is to ring the mw perhaps?

Yes I have this and im 29 weeks. Both ribs hurt and shoulder blades ache but don't know if that is down to a change in posture?

I'd phone NHS Direct or your midwife if I were you.

ds was breech but I didn't have any pain like you are describing (although it is possible as CC has said).

Best to get it checked out asap. Good luck

Oh wow, responses thanks.

I had Obstetrician appointment on friday and did ask if baby was head down and casually mentioned i had maybe a foot or something in my rib. he didn't say anything just said it didn't yet matter if baby was head down. BUT it has become more uncomfortable over the weekend.

I was curious about gallstones, as i read this somewhere else. The baby does seem to move alot so just don't understand why the pain is always there IYWWIM.

I could ring my Ob. on mobile, but don't want to unless it seems serious

I think that the telling thing is the shoulder pain. I had that too and it is a classic symptom of gallstones when coupled with a pain under your right ribs. For some reason pregnancy often sets off gallstones(I can't remember why). I would definitely get it checked and steer clear of any fatty foods like cream or cheese. hth.

My little girl was very long and not breech. When I was 39 weeks I felt terrible pain in my ribs. It turned out her foot was lodged there and she actually pushed the so much against them that the intercostal muscles split.
When she was born her foot was twisted but was soon put right by physio

I would not had believed it could happen but it did

I have read that some woman with pre eclampicia get pain under ribs. When was your BP last checked?

i had this wen preg but already knew i had gall stones jus had 2 wait til had my daughter 2 hav the op,r u bein sick ? i would still ring midwife in morn cause hav also heard of it bein link 2 pre eclampsia so any headache/vision probs get straight on the phone,they would rather u ring then anythin bad happen,so dont worry bout wastin anyones time ! !

ditto Lisad, I was at gp's last week for ante natal checkup and she mentioned that early signs of pre eclampsia can be a pain under right rib as it can affect your liver. Do you have a headache, swollen ankles or anything else related?

I had exactly that from about 32 - 34 weeks. I am now 36. Mine did not change after food (gallstones pain comes on in attacks esp after fatty food) and was constant, tender and worse when I was lying on my side. It used to make it difficult to sleep.The worst thing was if I tried to turn in bed it often felt like my ribs were ripping apart just in that area. Really sore and horrid .
I talked to obstetrician and midwife about it at length and they both said it was normal, due to my ribs starting to 'flare' out to give LO bit more room. His bum seemed to constantly sit under my right ribs, although I don't feel any feet caught under there. I was measuring large for dates, 37 weeks rather than 34 so maybe that meant my ribs were having to make xtra room IYSWIM?
It has got alot better and is almost gone completely now. Have a chat to your midwife / obsstetrican / GP if you are worried to rule out gallstones and other stuff such as blood clots (tend to cause severe pain that 'catches' on breathing in), and I hope it soon goes away for you too.

Sorry forgot to say mine was only on the right side, the lower ribs only, and hurt to touch too.

Definitely sounds like gallstones to be - underneath your right rib and pressing through to your back/shoulder. Gallstones can be a common problem in pregnancy. Most people with gallstones don't realise they have them. Problems often arise in pregnancy due to the lack of space.

I didn't know anything about gallstones until March when I had a bad attack of biliary colic (where your gall bladder squeezes the bile out and cramps because of the stones) found out it was chock full of stones, and I'm having it out on Wednesday!

Sounds like it could be either one of those 2 serious things -

pre ecalampsia (had that last pg) although BP okish ATM.

gallstones- as i do have that sholder pain

OR just baby, mmmm hope it's this one

I have called Ob and waiting for him to call me back.

UKI - I had this, I cried with pain, it really was terrible - with my second. It felt like my ribs had been bent

It only eased after ds2 was born and during subsequent pregnancies I went to a chiropractor. perhaps you could try seeming someone like that?

Ob. hasn't called back, and it is night time here now,

I checked my BP and it is fine, so I'll just wait and see.

gardeninggirl Thanks for your post I remember you from the due in August thread, and have thought about you, but haven't seen you around.

If you think it may be gallstones, then try cutting down on fatty food. For me it was large amounts of saturated fat that set me off (roast meat especially). Since I became pregnant, the acute attacks haven't been as frequent, but I've had more general discomfort and pain - especially tender to the touch.

Also if you find the pain comes on at night, then lie on your left hand side - the gall bladder is on the right, so if you lie on your left gravity helps the bile come out without excessive squeezing.

A quick ultrasound scan will show you if you have gallstones or not.

Don't want to panic you Uki but I would get your bloods done ASAP.

I had severe pre-eclampsia and HELLP syndrome resulting in ds being born at 34 weeks, it started with very bad pain under my ribs (epigastric pain). My bp was fine and no protein in my urine, everyone kept telling me it was the position of the baby etc, eventually (about a week later) I was in so much pain my mw sent me to hospital where someone finally took some blood and I was diagnosed. Really hope this isn't what's happening to you but definitely better to get checked out. Good luck!

I had this - had tests done etc but nothing found. In the end it was called 'rib flare' and put down to my rib cage expanding. I'm quite small - are you? I took a week off to rest as was finding it impossible to work - did some yoga and it eased dramatically. Agree you should get it checked out, but don't panic - might simply be your body adjusting.

Hi Uki I remember you too! We were both due the beginning of august I remember? We were some of the first on the aug thread. They changed my due date to July - not that I really kept up with mumsnet until I started mat leave a week ago. Since then it has been my prime entertainment!

How are you feeling? Has the Obsetrician got back to you yet? Hope things are settling down and they have ruled out anything nasty.

I am feeling a bit anxious today - today I had a scan at 36 weeks, as I have a big bump
Result: Baby is already 4 kilos and over the 97th centile for head diameter. And he still has 4 more weeks of growing to do .

Oh so that's where you went, I was hoping nothing bad happened to you, as you were such an active poster and (so was i) in the begining. Aug thread is very big, so I'm often on the pg after m/c one more.

Hope you scan went well???? I have one at 36 weeks too, but I'm not due till Aug 15, they also want to check growth because I am on asprin.

i've heard that even scans etc, can not be that accurate for measuring so who knows baby might not be that big.

No dr. never got back, but last night i felt the baby kick hard under ribs, so it must be him, trying to break my ribs, poor thing is probably tall like dh and trying to make room.

lying down is best for being comfortable

Fearscape- you haven't alarmed me, although your post is well suited to your name LOL, seems rather weird that you had pre- eclampsia and didn't have high BP, was that just you got other symptoms first? My Dr. is on the lookout for me as i had this last pg, was all a bit scary i guess that's why i am paranoid.

Naetha- I had this pain (as well as in the chest)with ds too, that stayed even after birth they did ECGs and everything and couldn't find anything. last night i got a terrific kick in the ribs so I think it is the bubs, trying to do damage!!!

mcnoodle- i'm not sure i have small ribs or anything, i'm size 10 but yes maybe this is a long baby.

I'm a little less worried now so that's good for me. ta
