I know how polite you all are, but I would really like the most honest response you can think of -

Dh wants to name Boy twin 'Archie'.

I like it but I'm really worried about the reaction it might get from other people. (hope that doesn't make me too shallow?)

Please could you tell me what you really think of it...

ooh - one of them is very similar to dd's name. And I love Imogen...

Archie from Monarch of the Glen was gorgeous though!

KateandtheGirls · 03/09/2004 14:25

I could never get any personalised things when I was a child, because my name is Kate, not Catherine, Katherine, Kathleen, Katie, Kaitlin, etc. etc.

Fennel · 03/09/2004 15:47

muminamillion - my dd3 is a Callista (also not after Calista Flockhart who I think is already less famous than she was).

That's an idea twiglett, Archer is better than Archibald!

I'll run it past Dh, but I bet he'll say no before I've even finished my sentence!!

Fennel, what a coincidence!! The only other time I have heard of Kallista/Callista/Calista is of American children - seems quite popular there. What made you choose it? We liked the meaning. (Sorry off the subject again I know)

Hulababy · 03/09/2004 16:42

We also can't get personalised items easily for DD, simply because of the spelling we choose: Mollie, rather than Molly.

Fennel · 03/09/2004 16:45

muminamillion - we liked Greek names, and unusual names. It fits with our other dds names. We were tempted by Calypso and Callisto but Callista seemed a bit easier for people to remember.

there's a Callista in Margaret Atwood's "Blind Assassin" - a Canadian novel.

MUMINAMILLION · 03/09/2004 16:47

Fennel, we like Greek names too. Can I ask what your other names are???

suedonim · 03/09/2004 17:26

An honest opinion? I don't like Archie (but do like Morgan!) As for Archer - everyone will think of 'Jeffrey/Geoffrey Archer'!! But, it's your baby and you can name him whatever you want to name him.

suedonim · 03/09/2004 17:29

Oh, yes, I forgot to say, you can buy 'name it yourself' personalised stationary items in Woollies now. Dd2 is desperate to have something with her name on!

alexsmum · 03/09/2004 17:45

Honestly? Don't like either morgan or archie.
Archie sounds cute now while he's a little baby but don't think it will have same appeal later. And Morgan is a surname, not a girls name.
Sorry , but you did say be honest!!

Papillon · 03/09/2004 17:48

my parents just got a new dog and called him Archie.. named after a man they know called Archie

but people call pets and babies all sorts these days... it is a nice name

Mirage · 03/09/2004 21:17

I feel really rude saying this, but although I have a 2nd cousin called Archie,I don't really care for it.I always think of a little hunched up balding man when I hear it.I'm also one of those people who prefer 'full' names rather than diminutives.

When I hear shortened names,I always wonder if the 'owners'would get taken seriously professionally in 20 years time or so.

I used to like Morgan, until some of the chavs around our way picked up on it............

I feel really guilty now.
ps do like Archer though.

hana · 03/09/2004 21:29

sorry smeely, not a bit fan. Reminds me of 'Archie Bunker' - a 70's sitcom from the states about a whinging racist old fart and his family!!

sorry

I am thinking of giving our baby my mum's surname as a middle name - it is certainly more 'boy' than 'girl' but now after reading all of this I'm having second thoughts!

blueteddy · 06/09/2004 19:40

I love the name Archie! It's very cute & I wish I had chosen it 4 ds2 rather than Alfie as everyone mentions Alfie Moon when ever I tell them his name!

CountessDracula · 06/09/2004 19:49

I like Morgan, had a boyfriend and a cat called Morgan years ago!

I think Archie is rather too fashionable and runs the risk of being the next Kevin (sorry to any Kevins) as a result.

CountessDracula · 06/09/2004 19:50

muminamillion are you Jilly Cooper by any chance

zebra · 06/09/2004 19:50

Why don't some people like dimuniatives? Always puzzles me (immensely).

Archie is fine (but I personally would put Archibald on birth cert. & call him Archie for short). Morgan sounds like a horse (it is a breed, I think...)

clairabelle · 06/09/2004 19:59

I like Archie but do have the thing about how will it sound when they're older. I have a Poppy and we adore it it really suits her but I hardly think she could be a Chief Inspector with it She'll have to be a lady who lunches

Jimjams · 06/09/2004 20:06

Well we have an Archie. We get a lot of positive comments on it. It's becoming a more common name now as well. 5 years ago when we named him people wouuld comment on it being unusual, but now a number of friends know more than one Archie. Not as common as ds2's name though (which is top 10, although most people shorten it and we don't).

We didn't put Archibald on the birth certificate as neither of us liked that - we only liked Archie
. We are now having this argument about one of number 3's potential name though. We both like jake, but I think Jacob should go on the birth certificate.

The only annoying thing about the name Archie is that there always seem to be people around who call him Alfie. Never worked that one out!

Tessiebear · 06/09/2004 20:08

I looovvvvve the name Archie and would love to call any future son by that name. It appeals to me especially as my maiden name was Archer

SoupDragon · 06/09/2004 20:10

Can I just say that Morgan isn't a surname, it's Welsh and apparently means "The Edge of the Sea".
