I know how polite you all are, but I would really like the most honest response you can think of -

Dh wants to name Boy twin 'Archie'.

I like it but I'm really worried about the reaction it might get from other people. (hope that doesn't make me too shallow?)

Please could you tell me what you really think of it...

I really like Archie.

My own reservations would be 'Archie and Morgan' slips of the tongue nicely, 'Morgan and Archie' less so because of the '...an and', so for ease of speech, I think it would always fall into 'A&M'....and with girl/boy twins, who may well end up looking v alike, I would avoid giving the girl a gender-ambiguous name, IYSWIM.

HTH - it probably doesn't at all, but that's my honest reaction

Lonelymum · 03/09/2004 10:45

Don't worry about other's reactions. If you like it, that is all that counts. It wouldn't be my choice, tbh, but it is not as if it is a really wierd name so people won't have difficulty remembering it or spelling it. I speak from experience as my three boys all have rather unusual names, at least two of them are constantly being confused. Sometimes I feel a bit embarrassed saying their names in public as people tend to stare, but mainly, I love their names and like the fact that I have virtually never come across anyone, in real life or fiction, with the same names as my boys.

CP3 · 03/09/2004 10:51

I had Corban as my boys name and everyone hated it, resulting in baby not being named for quite a few weeks and Corban being his middle name. Even now know says Corban s nice, i hope he likes it thogh. When hes older id really like him to use it as his first name just to annooy my family

spacemonkey · 03/09/2004 10:53

Archie is a trendy name at the moment - there's been a vogue for "old man" names in the last few years (Archie, Alfie, Sidney, Arthur etc) - that would put me off tbh because it's a name that will "date". IMHO! But if it's a name you really love you shouldn't let anyone put you off. My ds (who is now 10) was called Alfie for the first 3 weeks of his life - it was gaining in popularity then (I think the Alfie and Annie Rose books popularised the name along with the old-man-name trend) - but I changed my mind. Just felt that while it was an adorable name for a little boy, he may find it harder to live with as a man iykwim.

Archie is a great name - don't like the full version of Archibald though. Just read in the Oban Times that the Duke & Duchess of Argyll have had their son christened Archie. Goes very well with Morgan too!

phatcat · 03/09/2004 11:09

I love the name - it's v. popular up here on Skye at the mo, also the Gaelic version Gilleasbeag

KateandtheGirls · 03/09/2004 12:29

Well I didn't realise that Archie was such a popular name. You asked for honest opinions. My honest opinion is that I don't really care for it. But judging from the other responses there are plenty who do.

I would also put the full name on the birth certificate, but I would have to like both versions. In other words, if I liked Archie but not Archibald then I don't think I could use it.

Love Morgan though. Probably because it's my nieces name! That's also not a name I would ever choose myself. I prefer more old fashioned feminine names.

vict17 · 03/09/2004 12:33

I love Archie but don't like Morgan I'm afraid - but then I know a couple of blokes called that so associate with a boy's name.

suzywong · 03/09/2004 12:34

Sorry but I just keep getting a vision of a big camp jessie in a pink jumper and a kilt (and we don't even get Balamory over here)

Sorry to be blunt

smellymelly · 03/09/2004 12:37

I didn't realise Archie was so popular either. It does sound lovely for a little boy, and the adult it reminds me of is the rich toff in 'Game On' who Mandy worked for then went out with!

Hopefully the 2nd name will soften this up nicely - 'Morgan Rose', and Archie will only ever be Archie!! (although he will have Micheal as a 2nd name).

Any more honest responses would be much appreciated....

Total opposite to vict17 - I love Morgan (my sis Artyalex's little girl is named it) but cannot abide Archie Im afraid. Brings to mind a smelly scruffy old man with holey cardigan and slippers and a pipe hanging out of his unshaved face. Sorry to be so forward! But you are very brave to ask - I wouldnt dare get comments for my girls' names (too obscure for most people).

vict17 · 03/09/2004 12:40

You see now I just have images of the blokes I know with Rose as a middle name. So so sorry!
But love love love Archie. Was on my list but dh said had to be Archibald. Really fancy Archie in Monarch of the Glen

smellymelly · 03/09/2004 12:41

Vict17 - are you serious... What kind of blokes have Rose as a 2nd name? Or are you just winding me up??

OP posts:
MUMINAMILLION · 03/09/2004 12:42

hee hee vict17. My mums middle name is 'Duncan'! She was meant to be a boy, but when she proved to be a disappoinment they gave her the name anyway and she absolutely hates it. Oh, thats another point - would the child like Archie in later life? From my experience, children NEVER EVER like the name you give them, so maybe that was not worth saying atall. Ill shut up now.

codswallop · 03/09/2004 12:44

my old bosses cat was called archie :O

I quite like it but am put off by any name that is a diminutive whent he full name isnt used
eg my ds3 charles has a baby pal called just "charlie"
I think cute when littel but a bit odd when older adn maybe trying to be taken seriuosly

same goes for allt he girly names
Poppy daisy etc ect

Mind you go throuhg labour and you can call them what you ike!

futurity · 03/09/2004 12:45

OK..honest answers. Morgan I always thought was a boys name but that is just me not knowing anything! And Archie..well I dont really like it or not like it..my worry would be that it is very "trendy" at the moment but might move out of favour as the child gets older. Also an adult called Archie doesn't sound very grown up to me (thinking Ballamory again!)

codswallop · 03/09/2004 12:45

so I agree with Kate and the gitrls then I think

vict17 · 03/09/2004 12:45

No sorry, you misunderstood me. I just really dont see Morgan as a girl's name. It's just a mental block I have. Sorry didn't mean to cause offence

KateandtheGirls · 03/09/2004 12:46

I think Vict meant that she was picturing the male Morgans that she knows having Rose as a middle name. I don't think there's any doubt that Morgan Rose is a girls name.

codswallop · 03/09/2004 12:46

OMG thought you cant possibly name him after archie from balamory
he is total weirdy

codswallop · 03/09/2004 12:46

and doent morgan sound a littel " jordanesque"?

vict17 · 03/09/2004 12:47

Thanks Kate!!!

smellymelly · 03/09/2004 12:47

vict17 - absolutely no offence taken... you just made me laugh! I do want completely honest opinions so all these responses are great!

I had a name picked out for DD3 all the way through my pregnancy, then in the middle of labour changed it to OCTAVIA and wouldnt be talked out of it. Hormones are very odd things. So be warned. (Actually, it has really grown on us all thankfully)

smellymelly · 03/09/2004 12:48

I've never watched Balamory, should I check it out, or will it put me off ?
