My sisters just phoned me and said (30 wks) that she thinks she's wet herself. We know that her waters have possibly broken and I'm taking her to the hospital in an hour. My question is this. The midwives have told her that if the waters have broken they could give her antibiotics to delay labour for a few days. NOW the exact same thing happened to me and after 24hrs they said they shouldn't have been delaying labour because of the risk of infection after the waters breaking. I want to go into the hospital knowing my facts so do any of you have any experience of this?

antibiotics don;t delay labour, they stop infection

drugs can be administered to stop prem labour, doens;t alwyas work..but waters breaking does not always mean labour will start......steroid injections can also be given to help mature the baby's lungs in case it look as though baby is coming early....

her hindwaters may have leaked, rather tahn her forewaters rupturing, in which case the leak can reseal and replensih

Thanks for that. Off to hospital now!

let us know what happens

2babesmum · 15/06/2007 20:56

Ok, update. Her waters have broken, its not fore waters because the babys head isn't engaged. They have given her a steroid injection and she'll have another tomorrow. She also on a course of antibiotics for the next 10 days (for the infection risk). They're sending her home tomorrow and have no idea what'll happen timescale wise. They said every woman is different and she could go into labour tomorrow or in 8 weeks.
Does anyone have any experience of this because we'd like to know if its very likely she'll go into labour soon. Is it likely she'll go on for weeks? I know with my first the same happened and I was labouring by the next day

they shouldn't let her go for 8 weeks after waters break. they let my cousin go for 2 weeks and her ds had no water at all round him then

TaylorsMummy · 15/06/2007 20:57

oh poor thing, she must be worried!! dim question maybe but what happens if all the waters go? doesn't the baby need the fluid around it?

fransmom · 15/06/2007 20:57

LULU!!!!!!

2babesmum · 15/06/2007 21:08

I know thats what i thought. The same hospital mucked me around which i'm sure affected my bond with my first! Thats why i wanted some facts before i went in today. They said she'd make more fluid?

wtf? tell them you're bringing her in and they're to do something >>

what if something went wrong?

Frizbe · 15/06/2007 21:12

if its hindwaters they can go quite a while from what I remember, so don't panic too much, where's Mears when you need her, I'd start a thread asking for her if I were you!

2babesmum · 15/06/2007 21:14

She's in for tonight. I'm half expecting a phone call to say she's in labour though, bloody midwives tell you nothing. The same hospital sent my husband home for the night (when i had my 1st) and then an hour later said they were inducing me and taking me by ambulance to a hospital 40 miles away because they had no scbu beds! My husband shot accross town and made it to the ambulance just in time! I feel for her because if she has it now then it'll prob be a good 4 weeks before she can take him home, if she's lucky

as I remember the steriod injections speed the development and closure of the alvoli in the lungs to increase the baby's chance of breathing when delivered as she must is at risk of going into premature labour.

Every hospital / HA does things differently and medical science can advance loads in a few months so comparing situations may not be that helpful.

Best wishes.

2babesmum · 15/06/2007 21:17

Yeah I understand that but I can't help but have reservations.

my hindwaters went too. was only allowed to go for the weekend and then they booked me in for induction on the mon.tho this situation doesn't apply if her waters have completely gone.
hows she now?

2babesmum · 15/06/2007 21:20

She's fine, I left at 8pm ish. Shes not had any contractions whatsoever.

She would choose now - my mum went abroad for 3 weeks yesterday and my sister wanted her there. We're ummming and arrring whether to phone her because we wouldn't want her to come back and then nothing happen.

OP posts:
fransmom · 15/06/2007 21:25

could you phone her to warn her and then maybe leave it up to your mom?

fransmom · 15/06/2007 21:26

let her know everything thats happened and what you've been told - your mom would be gutted if she missed anything

2babesmum · 15/06/2007 21:29

Hmmm,my mum actually said to me the other day that she wasn't keen on going because it really hurt her seeing me in that much pain and she didn't want to do it again? (Although she hasn't told my sister this) I don't know what to do because my mum will almost certainly come back and it may be for nothing...

2babesmum · 15/06/2007 21:30

My sister also changes her mind every 5 as to whether she wants my mum there! they do get on btw!

fransmom · 15/06/2007 21:32

it may well seem like nothing but maybe your sis would like both of you for moral support? i know if i was your mom, i wouldve hated seeing you in pain as well but i would also like o be there. oh swetie, i wish i could wave a magic wand for you so that you could see what would happen

2babesmum · 15/06/2007 21:38

Thanks for the advise, i appreciate it - I have to get on with my revision .I'm doing 2 A'Level exams next week, and am going through the whole divorce and hasstle that brings at the mo! So after spending 8 hours in hospital I now have to frantically see what Freuds theory on god know what is and (funily enough) human biology! Still off to uni in september, going to prove that single mums can do it!
