My sisters just phoned me and said (30 wks) that she thinks she's wet herself. We know that her waters have possibly broken and I'm taking her to the hospital in an hour. My question is this. The midwives have told her that if the waters have broken they could give her antibiotics to delay labour for a few days. NOW the exact same thing happened to me and after 24hrs they said they shouldn't have been delaying labour because of the risk of infection after the waters breaking. I want to go into the hospital knowing my facts so do any of you have any experience of this?

oh he's so cute (really shouldn't have looked at that feeling more and more broody )

he should be off the cpap soon with his gestation and having had the steroids. keep us posted on how he's doing.

TaylorsMummy · 20/06/2007 11:23

lovely name for a lovely boy

2babesmum · 20/06/2007 20:25

Ahhh, I visited today and he cried! I mean he really cried It was a bit squeaky but still it's a cry, didn't like having his nappy changed - bless. My sister got to hold him too which is great! Got to admit I'm definately not getting broody, I'm 5 weeks away from a decree absolute (paranoid, controlling bloke) so that has a tendancy to put you off reproducing. It's just me and my girls against the world and I'm totally happy with that. Although I do love tinsy beebies!

Oh and I forgot to say he breathed on his own for 3 hours today, so we should see the end of all the nose tubes soon. (is that called cpap krackers?)He'll still need the feeding tubes for a while though until he's mastered sucking/swallowing etc

kreamkrackers · 20/06/2007 20:39

yeah cpap - continuos positive airway pressure. imagine blowing a balloon up and not letting all the air out, basically it keeps the lungs open. it's very common these days, it's used a lot for people with sleep apnea.

the nasal gastric tube should be out just before he goes home. the main things for going home are that they can breathe efficently (very early babies are allowed home with oxygen), maintain body temp and take enough feed in whilst gaining weight. once he's home he'll suddenly come on so much, i think it's more stressful because they've been through so much but it's such a relief to get them home.

Frizbe · 20/06/2007 22:42

awww he's gorgeous great news re the breathing too

2babesmum · 24/06/2007 19:08

Off the cpap for 12 hours a day now!

Hi all, mum and baby are doing great - taught my sister how to pummel today! Her milk has come in and she proudly shows off how much shes pumped every 4 hrs! Tyler is having 1.5ml an hour (though a tube) but his tummy doesn't quite agree with it at the mo and he's sicking some up. Midwife says he's just adjusting (understandably) though, hopefully it isn't a problem.

sorry only just read this, no room at the inn???? is she ok? don't they have any spare family rooms near by?

2babesmum · 29/06/2007 17:18

No they don't. Its a real shame because she's expressing etc and it's a pain getting the milk to the hospital, and obviously she misses him. I said she could stay at mine otherwise she'll be 35 miles from the hospital, but not sure if we'll last 8 or so weeks Probably have killed each other by then . We'll see...

Frizbe · 29/06/2007 17:54

for her, let her stay for a bit, see how you go?? eh!?

kreamkrackers · 01/07/2007 16:48

it's so hard when you get seperated like that, i broke down in the car leaving the hospital

most babies don't stay until their due date, all the babies were leaving our hospital at around 36 weeks but because i was so determained to bf dd2 who kept falling asleep on the breast we stayed until her due date and in the end came home on bottles of ebm. a few weeks later i switched to fully bf and she's still bf at 11 months.

kreamkrackers · 14/07/2007 23:39

how's tyler doing?

kreamkrackers · 16/07/2007 09:11

bump

2babesmum · 21/07/2007 20:03

Hiya all, been on holiday - it rained all week . Anyway, Tyler is doing ok but he's had an infection (NEC) for the last 10 days. It is a serious infection but hopefully he's coming through it and seems to be better. He's up to 3lb 14oz which is good considering his infection but we just all want to give him a big hug and that always seems so far off . The hospital has warned that the infection is life threatening (25%) but he's beaten it so far. Hopefully its time to turn a corner now and he'll continue putting on weight.

it's good to hear from you. i'm really sorry to hear about the infection and all the bloody rain spoiling your holiday. dd2 was plagued with infections (mainly from the long line) which really did hold her back but she's been so healthy since coming out of hospital. i really hope he has turned the corner but some prem babies do have more setbacks, it really is a rollercoaster ride in hospital until they're out and then they come on like most term babies.
