I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.

Just popping on to see how everyone was getting on. I can still see a few familiar names from a few weeks ago. I’m so sorry to see so many people suffering so much.
Anyway I noticed foreverblues comment about wanting to wean your 3 year old before the new baby comes. I’m not sure how far along you are in your pregnancy but you might find the older one weans themself off the breast. I was feeding my son until I was about 4 months pregnant and then he just stopped. It seems your milk can change flavour or your supply can reduce.
My baby is seven weeks now. It’s been a very hard seven weeks and I have an appointment at the GP tomorrow as I suspect I have postnatal depression. I still feel relieved to not be feeling sick anymore though. It really does get better. It’s just a long hard slog to get there.

Mirshid · 22/11/2018 21:44

No not on any medication at present.. it hasn’t even been mentioned.. I was sick until 16 weeks with my last and from then on only when hungry/tired but I’m sure it was gradually getting better by now whereas this time it seems to be getting worse. My mum and my husband are helping out a lot but my husband is away tomorrow night and am dreading trying to put a 4 year old and 2 year old to bed alone..

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/11/2018 21:54

@evie. Winge away. You are almost at the castle When do they play to cs you

@ksjourney. Needs must but alas only rice did it. And the. Regretted it

Many a time I moaned on here to @lucindaE saying about rice

@eallison. Glad your son had a good day

@mirahid. Welcome and congrats and yes must be so much harder doing no 3 when 1&2 to look after

@mumto sorry theres no one you can moan to. Friends who haven't had hg just don't understand how crap you feel

@hotchooc
Congrats on your baby and hope doc is supportive

I would say easier to wean older child off koi now before baby comes if you don't want to tandem feed

eallison88 · 22/11/2018 22:22

mirshid in which case I encourage you to see your GP asap and ask for antiemetics. Almost all GPs are happy to prescribe cyclizine, which is an entry level antiemetic. Very widely considered to be safe and very widely used for many years now. Hopefully that would help!! Might be worth taking a print out of the guidelines that lucinda links to in the first post on the thread - reading it will prepare you and having it in your by might be useful if GP is reluctant to prescribe meds.

TwoDrifters · 22/11/2018 22:56

Forever I, too, have a still breastfeeding almost-3-yr-old who I naively assumed would have stopped of his own accord by now. I never in a million years thought I’d be tandem feeding but my ELCS is booked for Wednesday and since he was still happily feeding away today I suppose it’s happening, whether I’m prepared for it or not! I’m hoping it will help them to bond as at the moment he’s still in complete denial and whenever we talk about the baby, he just shakes his head and changes the subject Sad

To whoever it was who said their heartburn is horrendous, please please mention it to your midwife, I stupidly was just putting up with it as yet another hellish symptom of an HG pregnancy, but spoke about it at a recent appointment and have been prescribed omeprazole which has helped SO much, I’m so irritated with myself for not having mentioned it sooner.

Despite being 38 weeks, I’m still feeling nauseous constantly and have today been sick twice. I keep telling myself I’m almost there but it doesn’t make much difference when you’re shattered and sickly the whole time. We are all doing brilliantly, though, we really are! Flowers for everyone! Keep crossing off those days!

eallison88 · 23/11/2018 07:02

It might have been me moaning about heartburn... I'm already on the highest dose of omeprazole (having tried ranitidine, which didn't help at all). I feel awful this morning. Opening my mouth to talk means I have to work really, really hard not to puke. Which is fun cos this morning I'm at hospital for consultant review of steroids, and this afternoon at a different hospital for my dating scan. Tbh, I think it might be connected to the fact that I have times and deadlines to hit today.

Reastie · 23/11/2018 07:21

Hot choc I was only thinking of you yesterday! Poor you with the pnd, please see your gp. I put it off for months and it got to a crisi point. I was prescribed medication (whilst being) and it really made a difference.

Twodrifters can your mw prescribe? That’s lucky as mine couldn’t and I’d just keep getting told to see the gp for everything.

Not a great night last night, think I’m anxious about scan tomorrow. Not just the scan itself but getting there and back.

eallison88 · 23/11/2018 07:25

My morning is getting worse... turns out that moving actually we make me heave. Huzzah

TwoDrifters · 23/11/2018 09:32

Reastie Actually not a MW, that’s a good point, it was a consultant in the Maternal & Fetal Assessment Unit who prescribed for me. I’ve been having monthly appointments with them due to complications in my last pregnancy but I tend to think of all my appointments as with the midwives when they’re not. Sorry for the confusion.

eallison88 · 23/11/2018 12:40

Finally saw a registrar after waiting for 3 hours. The first thing she offered me was a termination. So that was fun. I'm on max dose of steroids. She mentioned another drug that id not heard of. Then insisted on takinh blood to check my salt levels (no idea why)
Am now waiting for blood results and then w3 can come up with a plan, apparently. If I'm gonna make my appointment for my scan at other hospital then we need to leave here in about 1 hour. So I suspect I won't be getting that scan today.

Reastie · 23/11/2018 13:54

Noooooooo to missing the scan. I am in complete Shock at first thing being offered a termination. I hope you can get something else to help you. It’s awful when you can’t even move.

LucindaE · 23/11/2018 14:02

Hi ladies. Well, after an over night stay in a side room on an orthopaedic ward(!), I have now been politely asked to vacate my room so am waiting on hubby collecting me.

Consultant visted this morning. Claimed we met yesterday (we def did not; there was another hyperemesis patient in a&e when I was there so I think she's got us confused). I told her I'd never seen her before. She told her team I'd probably seen a lot of staff in the time I'd been here. Because she was sure she'd already explained everything to me, she explained nothing. I gave up and just asked if I could go home and with what meds. Now, on admission i was prescribed but did not receive any thiamine. I was given ranitidine, ondansetron and cyclizine. I have been discharged with 3x/day ondansetron only.

I feel 100% better than I did. I have eaten entire meals and drunk hot chocolates. I haven't vomited for over 24 hours. I am still a bit shaky on my feet but do hope I'm on the up.

Reastie · 23/11/2018 15:16

Mauis that sounds positive (other than the consultant thinking she’d seen you). What dose of ondansetron are you on 4 or 8 mg? Hopefully it’ll keep you ticking over to cope.

Scan tomorrow, I partly can’t wait partly am dreading the journey.

Welcome back Lucinda :)

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/11/2018 16:26

Welcome @lucindaE

Hope went as well as could

Good luck everyone on this thread

Hg is hell but is equalled out when that tiny baby is in your arms

💓😍💙

MauisLeftNipple · 23/11/2018 16:47

Reastie I am on 4mg 3x/day. I might stagger it with cyclizine, as that is what was done in hospital. What do you think? Also, should I take ranitidine?

Reastie · 23/11/2018 17:16

Mauis I personally prefer to staged my medication so I’m never running out of everything when I’m due for next dose. It works for me but it’s a lot to remember! I have specific times of the day I take each medication and so far I haven’t forgotten. I can often tell when I’m due a dose as I start going further downhill. FWIW I take 8 mg ondansetron. 4 mg didn’t do enough for me and touch wood 8 mg generally makes a real difference so if you find you’re still getting dehydrated on 4mg be aware they can increase it.

beanhunter · 23/11/2018 18:33

@eallison are you still on 10mg three times a day? Because that is NOT the max dose.

LucindaE · 23/11/2018 19:05

Blondeshavemorefun You were brilliant. Do call in when you can - always lovely to hear from you. Flowers
Welcome to Kleino LostNames Toasterstrudle and Mished . You've had lots of great advice. Very brave, those of you going for it again. Do please, press for meds - do as I say, not as I did! Toaster I am so sorry about mc's. Even one is traumatic and so unfair after Hyperemesis. The odds are on your side that all will go well this time.

eallison How are things?
SassehMonsta My goodness, I am glad OH is sorry for having his head where the sun doesn't shine, and you feel brighter.
Shoulddoitspoilt It's good they admitted you without ketones, as so often they insist on them as evidence of dehydration. How are you now?
Mauisleftnipple Hopefully feeling a lot better?
foreverblues Much sympathy over cold sores and 'subtle' pressure from work to think in terms of returning.
Evejacksxxx Don't endure heartburn, it makes the nausea so much worse. As others say, do ask for an effective anti acid. I believe you can get Omprazole over the counter?
Mumtobeeof3 Sorry you feel so awful. I hope you get an improvement soon. I am all admiration for those who manage this and one or two youngsters. What meds did you say you are on?
eallison How are things?

beanhunter Sorry to hear of 2am puking. That is so dismal.
Waves to Olivecake Mrs Reader Reastie (good advce about SMP) and TwoDrifters
Hotchocolate Lovely to hear from you. Sorry to hear of PND, and that the last few weeks have been tough. From what I have seen, feeling traumatised is normal enough after Hperemesis.
Waves to TwoDrifters My goodness, those who breast feed with this deserve medals. I was one of the handful of sufferers out of thousands who suffer after the baby is born - SeaEagleFeather was another - and the let down reflex seemed to stimulate it. It is so hard to stay hydrated when breast feeding if suffering from these dreadful symptoms.
Apologies to anyone rudely ignored.

Hotcholocate.

After an impossibly and unnecessary long day I now have aterouda for 15mg x3 daily. Ridiculously difficult to ger to this point. 2nd doctor tried to mansplain how some women react differently to pregnancy, and tried to give me a shortnof history of hyperemesis. I responded by puking (nearly) on him. Finally got to point if higher dose steroids (with the assurance that if I need them for the duration of pregnancy then I get them) and ranitidine as well as omeprazole. And a telephone consultation rather than having to go in next week. Amd im utterly exhausted.

Reastie · 23/11/2018 19:15

Eal it sounds like hopefully a good outcome from an unecessarily long and drawn out day. [eyeroll] at the mansplaining doctor, because a history of hyperemesis is just what you need

hotchocolate86 · 23/11/2018 19:22

reastie the GP has prescribed me an antidepressant and some beta blockers for anxiety. Fingers crossed they help. Good luck with the scan tomorrow. It’s so scary going out when you feel so unwell. I hope you turn a corner soon and start to feel a bit better.
blondes thank you for the congratulations.
This thread was so helpful when I was suffering. Thank you for keeping it running lucinda.

SassehMonsta · 23/11/2018 19:22

Evening all. Scan today went well, date moved again, so 31st May. Which is somewhere in the middle of all the guesses so far!! Sickness is slowly becoming less. I have left my meds late again tonight and don't feel too rough (but not had dinner yet and don't feel like eating).

Dd ate some food yesterday that she shouldn't have, and so has been sick this evening, just as we got in the house. Poor thing is cuddled up in bed asleep already.

SassehMonsta · 23/11/2018 19:32

Screw you late meds. First proper bile vomit in ages.

MauisLeftNipple · 23/11/2018 20:30

Oh Sasseh Sad

I'm having a wobble. Took ondansetron at 6pm. Was already feeling a bit nauseous then, and the feeling hasn't really gone away. Have eaten a small dinner and drunk half a small glass of water. I was feeling better in the hospital earlier today Sad. Might take some cyclizine then risk a hot chocolate.
