I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.

When you're running late for your 20 week scan appointment as you felt too poorly to get out of bed then your body decides to throw in a vomit fit Confused

Reastiepeace · 31/10/2018 15:06

Thought you might be interested that I heard back from obstetrician and I’m unable to see any obs privately as they aren’t covered by insurance for NVP. I’d have to go to Portland street in London

SeaEagleFeather · 31/10/2018 18:34

reastie are you not entitled to a second opinion?

elpreggo how was the scan? I hope you made it in time and all was good

SeaEagleFeather · 31/10/2018 19:09

reastie

I remembered there was a consultant specializing in HG in London, Catherine Nelson-Piercy, professor of obstetric medicine and consultant obstetric physician at St Thomas’ Hospital, London.

I am just wondering if it's worth trying to contact her for a telephone appointment. I think it was her who took on Kalidasa who was dangerously ill and could not get adequate treatment .. do you happen to remember if it was Ms Nelson-Piercy, lucinda?

LucindaE · 31/10/2018 19:32

SeaEagleFeather My goodness, you have a good memory. Sorry, I wish I did remember the name, but my memory seems to have turned into a sieve after my daughter's birth and never recovered Wink.
Reastie Some good advice from SeaEagleFeather eallsion and everyone.
Bumblebee Oh dear! Sad with Hyperemesis, nothing is more nauseating than a fried breakfast first thing. Envy That means green faced Sad

Thank you seaeagle, I’ve just sent a desperate email to her, I’ll let you know what I get back. I’m getting increasingly desperate and an close to ringing my gp tomorrow —again— in tears.

SeaEagleFeather · 31/10/2018 20:48

heh, memory isn't normally that good lucinda! blush I just remember there was one in London, one in East Anglia I think and definitely one in Newcastle at the General.

Reastie, I really hope she can come up with something.

eallison88 · 31/10/2018 21:35

reastie I've got everything crossed for you.

I spent 2 hours in work today, meeting with my line manager and two colleagues to cancel/postpone/delegate/dig our resources from 5 years ago to reuse! Basically I've now done everything I NEED to have done before Christmas. If I do manage to get back in for a few hours a day towards the end of term then anything I manage to do is an added bonus. It's taken a massive weight off my mind. I won't be pushing myself to get back in asap, and thus prolonging the bad period. I definitely feel more secure in my job and more confident in my abilities and who I am to say no to things this time, to prioritise me, this baby and my family over work. Yes, I'm sure there will be dark times again before this baby arrives. But I am going to look after me, baby and my family as my only priorities this time.
The time in work also confirmed I'm not capable of working at the moment. I work with hubby and as we left at the end of the day I told him that I needed to get home to puke then sleep. We laughed at the glamour of my pregnancies! I fell asleep in the car -its a 20minute journey! Puked at MILs (whilst picking son up) then slept for 3 hours when I got home. No more work for me for a while!!

Must venture out for lactulose tomorrow... struck down by the consitpation. Not a problem last time, but I mainly lived on tinnedoeaches so that probably helped. Struggling to stomach peaches this time,, tho diet much more varied and healthy. Ho hum.

Wishing everyone a peaceful and restful night. And praying the obstructive health professionals have some kind of divine intervention dreams and change their unhelpful ways!!

bumblebee39 · 31/10/2018 21:56

Having cold hot dogs and ketchup for a bedtime snack

Weird having cravings and everything making me sick all the time..,

elpreggo27 · 31/10/2018 22:01

@SeaEagleFeather scan was fine no idea how I'm growing a baby with NVP lol!

SeaEagleFeather · 31/10/2018 22:07

my gyne said that they are proper parasites. YOU can be going thru hell but as long as you get the minimum of liquid in, -they- will be fine.

Admittedly if it goes on for too very long you might need a topup of the short-term-stored vitamins and minerals. But you can be on the floor and he or she will be fine.

elpreggo27 · 31/10/2018 22:23

Yeah I've given up with prenatals etc as gave me bad cramps and made sickness worse and I haven't broken him yet...but he is breaking me!

eallison88 · 01/11/2018 08:25

elpreggo it certainly is amazing how babies seem to thrive whilst we struggle so much! My son was 9lb!

elpreggo27 · 01/11/2018 09:09

My mum had big babies so I'm dreading the possibility lol!

Reastiepeace · 01/11/2018 09:45

That’s exactly how I felt about dd, she was a proper parasite! I love her so much but she drained me completely.

Ealli that sounds like a productive day.

Heard back from doctor seaeagle recommended. She’s going to try to call me tomorrow but she’s not allowed to give recommendations to my gp which I think is what I need as I know the guidelines it’s just the registrars at the hospital that don’t follow them that my gp. She recommended for now ondansetron dose increased and metclopramide added in. That’s the combo your on isn’t it eallison along with cyclizine? I’ve sent the email to my gp and requested her to call me today so hoping she will follow the advice but I know she’ll be nervous to prescribe metclopramide without registrar input but the dratted registrars keep telling her wrong.

elpreggo27 · 01/11/2018 10:07

Spoke to PSS and they were so helpful. Recommended combining meds. Is there a particular combo usually recommended first? I know I should go to my GP but she has given up on me and told me to wait it out basically!

Reastiepeace · 01/11/2018 10:35

Elpreggo I think different people seem to have different combinations. I’m not a huge expert on combinations but sure someone would be able to help soon. Cyclizine is what they usually give to start and then add in on top of that. I’m hoping to get a combination of 3 drugs as soon as possible as currently on cyclizine and low dose ondansetron.

beanhunter · 01/11/2018 10:40

I didn’t tolerate metoclopramide so my combo was cyclizine (which alone was useless but does add something in combination) prochlorperazine (stemitil) and ondansetron. Now I’m on steroids I’ve temp dropped regular ondansetron due to constipation but as steroids wean sure I’ll need it back.
Then lactulose, fybogel and movicol plus high dose folic acid, thiamine and ranitidine. I think I rattle when I walk!

bumblebee39 · 01/11/2018 11:40

I can't take metroclopramide and am on PROCHLORPERAZINE too @beanhunter

HG win today... Managed to brush my teeth before I left the house! Had to get up at 4am but still!

elpreggo27 · 01/11/2018 12:13

thank you, my body hates metoclopramide too it gives me a stomach ache :( I have cyclizine but I usually throw it up haha, do you just take it at the same time as another chosen drug or do you stagger them?

elpreggo27 · 01/11/2018 12:14

@beanhunter yes I started ranitidine yesterday as I'm fed up of horrible bile burps

beanhunter · 01/11/2018 12:54

I tend to take something every couple of hours at my worst as that seems to help. So take cyclizine at the best of the bad points if that makes sense?

eallison88 · 01/11/2018 13:28

Just had my booking apt with midwife. Same midwife as last time, she rememebered me and was lovely.

I take all my meds at same time (except ranitidine which I take 7am and 7pm); 7am ish, 2pm and when hubby comes to bed 9.30pm ish (often I'm in bed by 8, so he wakes me to take the meds when he comes up). I did try to stagger them, but I was forgetting and getting mixed up. All at same time is easiest manage.

shouldidoitspoilt · 01/11/2018 14:28

I'm sitting outside the GP and looking for some words of support
I had HG with my last pregnancy
I'm very nauseas and have been sick two times today and I can't eat as it's all so yuck.
Biscuits and crackers are insulting.

I want to know if there are guidelines on prescribing anti emetics
I can see that they are to be viewed as a profalactic measure if the mother has previously suffered. Is this the case?

It's a new GP and I'll have to discuss some hard items today.
But I can't be going to hospital again for help with this.
I want to nip it in the bud.
Will they accept this or what do you think?

autumnleaves19 · 01/11/2018 16:27

Hi all,

Hope it's ok to joint. I feel a fraud because I'm no way bad as other folk after reading the thread

I had a lot of nausea initially but it ramped up to vomiting closer to the 12 week mark. I'm not being sick everyday but some days I can't keep anything down and the nausea is v much there. I'm consultant led and have been prescribed CycliZine.

Does anyone else find this makes them very sleepy? I'm already sleepy so I find I just need to drop off hence I'm reluctant to take it on the days I work (3 days a week)
