Babys first clothes sizes

Sorry if there is a more useful please to post this. Has anyone got any advice regarding first clothes sizes. I've picked up 0-3months which says up to 12lb 4 and then there's "first size* which is up to 9lb 4 so I've put them both down and walked away confused. Is the "first size" necessary and if so how quickly will baby grow out of them and should I be buying many?

Yes I used the first size ones as my babies were under 8lbs at birth. I'd get a few of each

grannyscobwebs · 03/10/2018 11:10

Definitely get first size unless you're particularly expecting a big baby.Smile

happymummy12345 · 03/10/2018 11:11

Usually yes
I went to mothercare. I got newborn which were up to 10lb to take to hospital. My baby was 6lb 7oz, so needed size tiny baby, up to 7lb 5oz.

YouCantBeSirius · 03/10/2018 11:13

It depends on the size of your baby. My 9 week old was too long for newborn clothes even though she was only 7lb 8oz so she wore first size or up to one month for the first 3 weeks. Then she wore 0-3 months until she was 7 weeks old.

I also had to buy quite a lot because she has reflux so is sick a lot and I don't want to have to wash clothes constantly. I think I had around 20-25 vests and sleepsuits in each size. I had 3 cardigans in each size too.

It's not necessary but I liked to dress her in little outfits sometimes so I also bought soft dungarees and little leggings and t-shirt sets.

Yes I used some first size/newborn and then some up to 1 month with both. If your happy to buy 2nd hand have a look on local Facebook selling pages as they will be barely worn (like 2 weeks for most babies!) however 0-3 swamped my 8lb dd for a good 2m!

SoyDora · 03/10/2018 11:16

I had two fairly big babies but 0-3 months swamped them for the first 6-8 weeks. I’m expecting again in December and have bought some in ‘newborn’ or ‘first size’, some in 0-1 months (Next do this size, I find it a useful ‘in between’ size) and some in 0-3.

Baby160P · 03/10/2018 11:16

I wondered the same the other day. I'm going to see at my 20 week scan Tuesday as I believe the tell you the percentile of of babies measurements?
Also if it's a boy my OH has all big boy babies in the family so I'll aim for newborn for most things

StarfishSandwich · 03/10/2018 11:16

My little one was 8lbs 15oz. He was far too big for some of our newborn stuff. He fitted some first size and up to 1 month for a couple of weeks. He’s in all 0-3 now at 4 weeks. He’s very long so it’s mostly the body length that is an issue. I’m already using vest extenders on some 0-3 vests!

Matilda1981 · 03/10/2018 11:16

My daughter was 9lbs and I’ve put her straight into 0-3 month clothes - I’m way too tight to spend money on newborn clothes that she’s only going to be in for a couple of weeks! It does all depend on how big your baby is likely to be!

Charlottejade89 · 03/10/2018 11:17

I used newborn for 3 weeks and up to 1 month for 6 weeks with my dd who was 7lb 15oz born. she's 10 weeks now and her 0-3 drowned her at birth and still has plenty of room now

Brandnewstart · 03/10/2018 11:18

I’ve just had a little girl who was 7lb 9oz. I didn’t buy first size but did buy the ‘up to 1 month’. She has worn them loads and still fits in them at 3.5 weeks.

Bluebelltulip · 03/10/2018 11:20

My DD didn't go into 0-3 until she was nearly 3 months. I would buy some in tiny baby, newborn etc then get more once baby is here.

s2204 · 03/10/2018 11:22

I got a mix of both, majority being 0-3m due to I’m expecting to have a 8lb baby xx

Aprilislonggone · 03/10/2018 11:24

Buy a few of each size. I went ott buying for ds, he was 5 weeks early and had to go shopping for everything - oh the horror!!
Stayed in o-3 for about 6 months!!
Def for money's worth anyway!!

Thesearmsofmine · 03/10/2018 11:28

My youngest was 8lb 9 and 59cm long and wore newborn for a couple of weeks. My middle son was 7lb 13 and was in them for about 6 weeks.

At that age sleepsuits and vests are all they need and you can pick packs of them up really cheaply in the supermarket. I much prefer clothes that fit properly!

FirstTimeBumps · 03/10/2018 11:32

Thank you all for your help. Think I'll get two packs of each and them Amazon Prime it when baby comes. My 20 week scan everything was measuring spot on 20 weeks which I was, apart from legs which were 19+6. My MW starts bump measuring next week but I believe that can be waaay off so didn't see a point in holding out for that to get bits and bobs in. Thanks again x

My first was 8lb 8oz and we put him straight in 0-3 months - a bit baggy, but wearable. My second was 8lb and was in newborn for a week before going into 0-3 months. Weight is a bit of a misnomer with this though, as it can be the baby's length which dictates which size they need - a chunky, shorter baby may weight the same as a longer, skinnier baby, but need different size clothing.

The main thing with this is don't worry about it. Supermarkets are open all hours, and amazon do one day delivery. Get some clothes, and if they are the wrong size then send your partner/relative out to get some of the right size. It won't hurt the baby being in a babygro that's too big for a few hours - it's not like they are trying to walk in it.

usernotfound0000 · 03/10/2018 12:39

I always find it easier to go on the weight given than the name of it as every shop seems to be different. There tends to be tiny or small baby which is usually up to 6lbs ish, first size which is up to 7.5lbs ish, then newborn is usually up to 9lbs, up to 1 month and then 0-3! I'm on my second and have just been sorting through all DDs old stuff as she was in all of the above and even I'm confused!

beccii161016 · 03/10/2018 13:01

But a few of each size from tiny baby to 0-3 because until baby comes along you won't know. A lot of people will say "don't bother with first size we barely used them" but all babies are different sizes so that means nothing.

I was told my DS would be 8lb at least so planned clothing around that. He was born 6lb4 and short so fit into tiny baby for 3-4 weeks (even though the cut off weight for those clothes was supposedly 5lb5).

Cover all your bases to be safe but don't buy large quantities until baby is here Smile

MsJuniper · 03/10/2018 13:12

My baby was 9lbs and I still needed newborn and 0-1 sizes for the first few weeks (and with a refluxy baby you can get through a few changes a day!)

OutPinked · 03/10/2018 13:22

I had ten pound babies so never used newborn, they went straight into 0-3. I bought lots of newborn things with dc1 not expecting to have such a large baby so had an awful lot of waste.

Don’t buy much in newborn size because even if your baby is average size, they won’t be in that size very long.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 03/10/2018 13:24

Ds was tiny and needed early baby stuff because newborn drowned him. Dd was 7 pounds 15 ounces but really long and so all the newborn bits with feet wouldn't fit.

I'd get a mix but maybe focus on 0-3 months.

unicornchaser · 03/10/2018 14:45

I've got a mix of newborn and up to 1 month which I think will do for the first 6-8 weeks from what other mums have said.
But got much more 0-3 month stuff (most of it is hand me downs though!) as dependent on baby's growth they could be needed for a lot longer than 3 months.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 03/10/2018 14:49

The very rough rule of thumb is that baby will usually weigh around what you did at birth.

So I was 9lb 9oz when I was born at 42w.
Both my babies rocked in at 9lb, and were straight into 0-3.

FYI some sleepsuits measure lengthwise.
Newborn is typically 48-50cm.

Wait4nothing · 03/10/2018 15:26

I wouldn’t buy much of any size before they get her though. Bothine were born 8lb but dd was still in 0-3 between 2-
4 months but ds was only in them 3 weeks and was in 6-9 by 10 weeks
