Just been reading the thread on small mums scared of having big babies and have to say it has scared me if small women are giving birth to 10 pound babies!

Im 5"8 and partner is 6". Partner was only 6.5oz (2 weeks early) and i was 8.3oz when born so neither of us were incredibly huge but still, wondering if is true tall ppl have big babies or just a myth??? Btw partner is really skinny and i was size 12 before pg so neither of us are "big" but i have put on about 2 stone so far and have ten weeks left!!

I think the size of the babies that your mum had is more relevant in predicting the size that your offspring may be. I am v little and had v big babies and so did my mum.

mumto3girls · 11/06/2007 16:24

I had a 9lb 8 baby and it was the easiest birth out of three ....

Don't worry, be happy.

A midwife told me that smaller babies can actually be harder to birth as big babies have their weight and gravity to help!

rabbitrabbit · 11/06/2007 16:25

Hiya, I'm only 5'2" and was a size 10/12 before ds. My dh is 6'2" and average size baby apparently. However, ds was 10lb8 and took forever to come out! All the babies on my mother's side were"average" and I'd love to know why I had such a big one!

CarGirl · 11/06/2007 16:26

tis unfair rabbit isn't it?????? I most agreaved to have whoppers and no clothes to fit them as they missed the newborn stage too.

Same here cargirl! I've stuck at one so far but I'm gradually coming around.

jessie123 · 11/06/2007 16:32

Wow never knew smaller babies were sometimes harder to birth!

It was the fact they kept telling me I measured small.............even though several complete strangers asked if I were having twins! Also she filled the car seat - it was a bit freaky, she's very tall! My 2nd was the biggest then they got smaller

rozzyraspberry · 11/06/2007 16:37

DS1 was 6lbs 4, DS2 was 9lbs 3. Didn't notice any difference between the 2 really although I'm glad the heavier one was 2nd! Had to have some stitches after DS2 but I was actually in less pain afterwards than I was with just a graze that wasn't stitched when I had DS1. Am now pregnant again and hoping for somewhere in the middle this time!

Now Hear THIS, Now hear THIS!!
I honestly don't think that anything really influences the baby's weight.
Bear in mind that I was only 7.9 at birth and hubby I believe was a large baby....although not sure exactly how much he weighed!
But we have had SIX children - they ranged between 2.14 for prem baby! right up to 12.9 for term baby -- the other 4 inbetween being 10.8, 10.12 10.14 and 7.9....so it seems its just one of those things really. On the plus side though, yes, it's definitely so much easier to delivery a huge baby than the little ones....my 12 weeks early little 2.14 prem, was breech and was the worse delivery imaginable. Big babies for me every time please!!

jessie123 · 11/06/2007 16:45

Thanks RoseQuartz. Well at the moment im big for how many weeks i am and from reading your message quite happy now if is going to be a big baby! My partners sister's baby was 9lb 1oz (really long and skinny) she needed lots of stiches and was im quite alot of pain after so that worried me abit!

I've had 3 big ones - 9lb12, 10lb0, 10lb2. I did feel aggrieved at not having the 'tiny baby' stage, but it's not the end of the world. I'm not particularly big - naturally a size 14 ish I think, was size 12 pre-pregnancy, dh is slight. None of the children are particularly big now - ds1 and ds2 are actually very small for their ages. I read that the birth weight bears very little resemblance to what size they will actually be in life.

RGPargy · 11/06/2007 16:54

My DS was 7lb 6oz when he was born, and he was 2 1/2 weeks early!!

My MIL reckons this baby will be at least an 8 pounder. I'm bricking it now!!

bambino1andbump · 11/06/2007 17:10

My dd was 8lb 14.5oz and no.2 is due in dec. I am really worried its going to be a 9.5-10lb baby!

cece · 11/06/2007 17:12

I have had two babies. The 8 lber was a lot harder to get out than the one that was over 11 lbs....

3isthemagicnumber · 11/06/2007 18:15

My first was 8lb 7oz and the second 10lb 3. Am 28 weeks now and know i am bigger already- have put on over 2 stone already. Definately had easier birth with the biggun- and he was induced. Think this one will be a whopper too. Im 5 foot 8 but normally weigh about 9 stone size 8/10 and dp is not that much bigger than me. Both my 2 are amongst the smaller ones at school/nursery now too !

maxbear · 11/06/2007 20:25

My dd was 6lb 10 and ds was 8lb 10, it did hurt a bit more but only for about ten minutes, I was lucky not to have torn either time and have had two easy births. I would have never thought that I could have had an easy birth of a nearly 9lb baby but I did. I think that some people have easy births with big babies, and some difficult small ones.

maxbear · 11/06/2007 20:26

Mind you am a bit worried that if (and hopefully when) I have dc 3 it will be another two pounds larger and I will never be the same again

MrsWeasley · 11/06/2007 20:29

my 4th baby was 11lb 1 oz and it didnt hurt anymore than the others !

RoseQuartz · 11/06/2007 20:41

jessie123....glad you feel a little better about the 'christas turkey' you're carrying now!!! Sorry!!!
Just relax and say to yourself " what goes in must come out"............come what may, no matter how big our babies are, and how much we dread the birth, hey, its gone in there so its gotta come out, girl.......aaaarrrrrrggggghhhhhhh I remember the pain, omg omg I screamed the place down! But it hasn't put me off having more babies though, has it!I am gonna have another in February, all being well!! take care xx
That reminds me, I remember discussing the birth of first dd with mw and asked her how she reckoned the baby would be delivered, and she answered "can you remember which way it went in? Well chances are, it'll come out of the same place!!" cow!!!

Hopeitwontbebig · 12/06/2007 12:06

Hi jessie, I'm pregnant with baby 3, my first two were 10lb 10oz and 10lb 4oz. Obviously I have nothing to compare them with, but I found the delivery part the easiest bit, but if you think you're going to have a big baby, giving birth on all fours seems to help prevent tearing! Good luck...

Princesspowersparkle · 12/06/2007 12:18

I'm panicking about this now but only because everyone keeps saying to me- 'wow, you're massive'.... eeeekkk!
But, what will be will be and if its big its big. Theres nowt I can do about it now!

my 9lb 3oz ds1 came out with very few stitches required

i'm 5'4 and he was much bigger than any of my mum's 4 children were and she's 6'!

dollyk · 12/06/2007 12:23

I was induced cause ds was big I had him at 37 weeks can which I dont understand cause reading this thread there are bigger babies born at term

EllieK · 12/06/2007 12:24

oh, and I wasn't very big when pg, didn't show til nearly 7 months and was totally out front, they predicted a 7lb baby so how big you are in pg doesn't mean anything IMO
